WEDNESDAY MORNING, JULY 22.
llfl Alt fielifinnOOD INTELLIGIACE
linpoillamit Arrest.
A few days since the safe f the Mc•
Lure House in Wheoling was robbed of
$960 in greenbacks. Yesterday Robert
Hague, chief of the Police, received a dis
patch., giving a discription of the thief,
and stating that his name was Chas. Rog
ers alias Chas. Jones, and that he was
considerable of a ladies' man. Hague
as not long in getting sight of the indi
vidual, and calling to his aid,, officer
._ William C. Hamilton, they proceeded to
_ the livery stable of Mr. Jackson, where
Rogers was endeavoring to hire a carriage
to take some wcroen out riding. In re t ly
to Mr. Jackson's icquiry as to
what was his name, he replied
" Chas. Smothers." At this moment
Hague came up and said " your name is
not Smothers, but Charley Jones, and
you are from Wheeling." Rogers replied
that he had been in Wheeling. " Yer,"
said Hague, "and I have come to arrest
Haor,.
70.3.- -.ague and Hamilton then t3ok
hold
-of him, and started for the Mayor's
Office, but when they reached the door,
Rogers knocked Hamilton down, struck-
Hague a severe blow in the face, cutting
his cheek, and tore the coat off another
man's back. A few well directed blows
from the Chief soon pat Rogers " hors du
combat," and ha was placed in the lock
up, with a face somewhat swelled, and a
pretty severe headache. Hague then tele
graphed to the parties in Wheeling, and
they will 'be here this morning. Rogers
is a very genteel looking young man, but
from his determined resistance, shows
himself to be something of a desperado.
His unlit hands and feet show that he is
unaccustomed to labor, but we are much
mistaken if he does not have an opportu
nity of learning a trade for the next few
years.
Storage of Petroleum.
Mach his been said of late in regard to
the storage of Petroleum, within the city
limits. Baring & Brothers in their circa
lar report the following action in regard
to its storage in the city of London :
The Act for the "Safe Keeping of Pe
troleum," has now come into force, and
the Town Council are preparing them
selves to issue licenses under its provis•
ions. In the first place, application for a
license to sell or keep Petroleum must be
mode to the Sanitary Inspector, who will
lay such application before the Borough
Inspection Committee. The committee
will then fix a day for the consideration of
the application, and in the meantime a
notice must be affixed to the doors of the
premises it is proposed to license, setting
forth the day and boar of such meeting,
and the purpose for which it is to be
held, in order that the objecting neigh
bors may have an oppoitunity of stat
ing their objections. Supposing such ob•
jeetions are overruled, the applicant re
ceives his license under the following re
strictions :—The license only remains in
force one year. Only a certain quantity
of Petroleum and its products is to be
kept upon the premises at one time. It
shall be lawful for the borough surveyor
and inspector of nuisances, for the time
being, of the borough, and their respec
tive assistants, at all seasonable hours, to
enter into and open tha said premises,
and examine any place whatsoever in
which any of the said articles may be de
posited, stored, warehoused or kept, and
to take away any samples thereof in order
to examine or test the same. The build
ing in which the said articles shall be de
posited, stored, warehoused or kept, shall
be need for that purpose only and no
other; and such, building shall be
altogether unconnected with any oth•
er building , and shall be at a die
tance of not less than ten feet therefrom.
The roof of such building shall be pro
vided lvith ample and constant means of
ventilation, so that any imflammable gas
may have a ready escape ; and the floor
of such building shall be sank at least two
feet below the surrounding surface of the
yard or other opening or outlet by means
of which any of the said articles can es
cape shall be permitted. Lucifer or other
matches, or any inflammable or explosive
articles or thing whatsoever, (except Pe
troleum and its products,) shall not be
kept or used in the said building, nor shall
any artificial light of any kind be admitted
therein at any time. No person will be
permitted .to - smoke tobacco, cigars, or
any other substance or article within the
said building.
An Error.
The Chronicle of yesterday, speaking of
the release of Donally, who, it will be
remembered, was arrested a few days
since on a charge of stealing $290 from
one of the Provost Guard, intimates that
the matter was compromised, or in other
words that the Mayor was guilty of com•
pounding a felony. The Chronicle is mis-
taken in regard to this matter. The facts
are that upon examination, the testimony
was insufficient to detain Donally, or even
to hold him to bail, and consequently he
was discharged. This is a serious charge
to bring against an officer who, judging
from the facts laid before him, acted in a
manner that he conscientiously believed,
and which no doubt was the right way.
Hamblin's Combination.
We call attention to the fact that the
Combination still survives, unharmed
amid the war of elements, the wreck of
matter, and the crash of worlds. The
singing of little Ella, the dancing of
M'lle's La Folle, Florence, and Fielding,
the eccentricities of Dick Parker, Harry
Leslie, and the others are bound to draw
as long as they see fit to remain. Not
withstanding the weather, the hall contin
nes crowded, and we shall be much sur
prised if it doeslnot continue so to the
end.
Drilling for OH in Niagara Co.
The Niagara Falls Gazelle learns that
the parties engaged in drilling for oil on
the Collins farm. nortwest of Pekin, have
already gone down nearly 400 feet, and
that since renewing work this season it is
being pushed with energy. About 30 feet
of the distance is through a sand-rock
while the remainder is nearly all through
a red shale. The material now being I
brought to the surface has a very strong
odor of oil and those of much experience
in sinking shafts for oil express the great
est confidence in ultimate su cess. Parties
from Pennsylvania oil wells,:with residents
of the vicinity, are engaged in this enter
prise, the result of which will not be in
doubt much longer.
Serious Aceident.
Yesterday morning a servant girl in the
employ of Dr. Greenwalt on Wylie street,
by the name of Sarah Ann Noop, while
engaged in washing windows, fell from
the second story to the ground, a distance
of twelve or fifteen feet, striking upon the
steps that lead to the front door, and cut•
ting her chin severely, besides otherwise
injuring herself. She was seized with
spasms about an hour after the fall, and it
was feared had sustained internal injuries.
Personal.
Brigadier General Rowley arrived in
the city yesterday on a brief visit to his
friends. General Rowley Commanded a
brigade in the late battle at -Gettysbarg,
and was in. the hottest of the fight. He
fought his command with great spirit and
Judgment, but the rebels pressed him
sorely, and he lost 1,700 in killed, wound

The amount Lost. •
We yesterday learned from a private
source that the amount of oil Met at' the
fire at Oil City was 6000 barrels, but was
unable to ascertain wh ther it was crude

Since writing the above we are inform
ed that the 6000 barrels burned were ,not
at the refinery, but was crude oil from, the
mills of Messrs. Van Clark and Chase.
