When he left not one-third of their
tmnsporGstion had succeeded in getting
over.
Capt. Boyd, yesterday atterpoon, with
a company of cavalry got within a mile
and a half of Hagerstown, on the national
roan, when he discovered a large bOdy of
Nebel infantry moving into the town by
way of the Williamsport road. Heendeav
ored to make a circuit North of the town
to ascertain their movements, but their
infa itry force was too strong.
Firing has been heard to day in the di
rection of Clear Spring and Leitersbnrg,
probably caused by our troops driving in
the enemy's outposts.
There is no good reason known fur
Lee's army evacuating Hagerstown, and
then re occupying it within a few hours
with the same troops, unless he was die-
appointed in his facilities for crossing thel
river.
Il
Lee holds his present position a bat
tle cannot well be postponed more than
for~tyeight hours longer.
Heavy rain has set in, with a prospect
of contiuuing all day.
A.:: TMTaM BRIDGE, arlilly 10, 8 a. m.—The
Times' Special sayi oar cavalry forced the
rebel advance back to Funkstown on the
right, and beyond Bakersville on the left.
The enemy is in force, and shows fight.
There probably will be a battle to-morrow.

frtitethirßtahniohd Whig of the 6th inst.
, 'he-Whig discredits entirely the federal
reports pre rebel reverse in Perinsylvania,'
insisting that from " the subdhed tone"
of our dispatches it is evident we have
been -" very seriously worsted." In an
other place the Whig facetiously calls the
rebel offensive movement "a little sum-
mer tour of the boys into Maryland and
Pennsylvania;" and adds that Richmond,'
having been compelled, in the absence of
troons, to.defend herself; has " shown her
teeth" in, true and mastiff style. Upon
thisnoint it continues:
Atehmond !Showing Her Teeth.
"A party of Yankee rapscallions, hear
ing of her unprotected condition, have
crept up to the White House, with the in
tention of insulting and robbing her.—
They don't know the old lady. H' or quick
ear caught the sound of their fumbling and
fooling around her back yard, and being
unwilling to part with her babies and nig
gers, besiies having her meat-house bro
ken open, she has bared her arm, caught
for
up
th t the o
broommeet th icstk and poker, and gone
e villains at the garden
palings and knock them on the head. We
ani her when she went out. She looked
very unlike the quiet and genteel dame
whom we have known for some years past.
We may be mistaken, but the indications
were that she had so far lost her temer
that she intended to fight. Her teeth were
set, her eye flashed, her nostrils were dP I
lewd, her brow was frowning. She looked
'glorious in her anger, In fact, she looked
dangerous. We make no predictions. but
we are really very much afraid that if the
robbers don't. go am.y she will hurt some
body."
Morals in Riehmond.
The Whig upon another subject is less
facetious. We quote:
"Under the newpolicy of granting
licenses indiscriminately to all who apply,
a great number of drinking houses have
been established, to the evident detriment
of public morals. They spring up like
mushrooms in every corner, and in places;
where their presence is offensive to the re- 1
fined portions of the community. It is
even proposed to establish one on Gover
nhr street, in the room formerly occupied
by the High Constable. This street is
much" used by ladies, and one of the most
quiet in the city."
This, certainly, is too bad. That a
drinking shop ehon'J be opened in the
room once occupied by the "High Consta
ble" of Richmond is a desecration which
may well command the attention of the
authorities.
The Family of Gen. A. Sidney John
ston.
The Whi g, says that Gen. Gideon J.
Pillow has issued an appeal for aid to the
family of General A. Sidney Johnston,
who are in distress and destitution.
The " Whir , on General Booker.
The Whig has a ferocious article on
General Hooker, from which we extract
the following
"A distinguished gentleman of the South
bad r ceasion some years ago to spend four
months in the Paddle on the Potomac coast.
Bis business being of a public character
ho was assigned a cavalry escort of twenty
five men, under charge of two United
States officers. Those two officers happen.
ed to be Hooker and Stoneman, the one
now commanding the finest army on the
planet,' and the other at the head of all]
the cavalry in that army. With these of.
doers he spent every hour of every day for
the tour months, and slept by their side
on the grass at night. He necessarily
came to know them about as well as it
Is possible for one person to linos anoth
er. Mentioning the circumstance to us,
he said of Stoneman, that he was
never more thoroughly convinced of
anything connected with personal charac
ter than that he was a coward—an arrant
coward. Hooker he readily discovered to
be a vain, conceited, pretentious, boastful
fellow, of very moderate capacity and as
tonishingly ignorant. He had never seen
a pinion of the education implied by
graduating at West Point whose general
information and scholarship were so limit
ed. He knew nothing of the literature
and history even of his own profession
—of famous wars, campaigns and battles,
ancient or modern, or of the most noted
commanders or strategists. But he pre
tended to know everything, and always
insisted that there was a better way of
doing anything than the way in which it
had been done or was proposed to be done.
Not long after this excursion Hooker re
signed his commission in the army, and
fell into such disreputable ways of life in
San Francisco that the gentleman to whom
we refer ceased to raoogaize him as an ac
quaintance."
_R. C. GLY DE
Prom The Army.
The news from the Upper Potomac is
not as definite as we could wish it to be.
Lee, it seems, holds the line of the An
tietam, and-has in his rear and under
guard the fords at Sheperdstown and Will
iamsport. What General Meade's dis
positions are is not known, but it would
seem from the data at hand that if Lee
be desirous to retreat across the Potomac
he can'do so without serious loss. At the
very last reports he was' showing a bold
front and seemed disposed to offer battle.
His army was drawn np in line of battle :
on the heights near Funkstown, and were
intrenching various points of their front.
Semi-officially we are informed that there
was no fighting yesterday and very little
prospect of any to day. The cause of this
delay does not appear, but doubtless Gen
eral Meade is not disposed to risk a bat
tle until the fresh troops and militia are
incorported with his veteran army.. Gen,
Couch hadjoined him at last acconnts, and
by this time all his army must be well in
hand: — Gettysbnrg - Wis tiPurely defensive
fight forthe Union army, , but if a battle is
fought at Pankstown; General Meade will
be the attacking party, and must show a
higher order' of military talent than waif
needed, at 'Gettysburg. That he may be
equal to the great occasion we moat
'earnest ly hope.
