Gnn Testing.
We yesterday afternoon went down to
Economy to witness the testing of a new
breech loading rifled gun, the invention of
M. W. B. Smith, of this city, The test ,
ing took place a short distance out of,
Economy under the superintenee of Lieut.
Babbitt; Capt. W. J. Moorhead, Mr. Rick
etson and other gentlemen being present.
The. gun was •a six pounder, the. ball,
thrown being a 15 pound conical shot.
The target, which was nothing but a mere'
flag or strip-of muslin fastened to a pole,
was placed on the south side of the river,
distant about two miles, the ground slo
ping at an angle of about ten degrees.
The first shot fired fell about ten feet short
in a direct line with the staff. The suc
ceeding five shots fell within a apace of
n feet. The amount of powder used was
.one and a half pounds, and the elevation
!the gun the first shot five degrees, after
which the elevation was slightly increased.
The fret shot; bad this elevation been
given, would have cut the target down.
At the seventh allot it was ascertained that
the' balls were too large, and the firing
was discontinued until some fature time,
when other 'balls could be procured. At
the next Cost, shell will also be used, and
long and short range thoroughly tested
Thus far the test•hafr proved highly sat
isfactory. In this gun Mi. smith claims
to hisve overcome the objectioas yo the
Whitworth:and Armstrong guns in the fol
lowing manner. the latter guns the
screw has to be the entire size of the out
side of. the breach of the gun, and in a
large piece of ordinance, it is so large as
to become unmanageable, while in the
Smith gab, the mandril is not as large as
the bore, but on its au;l. is a copper cap
which makes a. loose joint, which upon
firii4(the gun becomes tight, bgt loosens
itself again as soon as the coneuesion
ceases, acting upon the same principle as
the sucker of a pump. Mr. Smith first
conceived the principle of his gun during
the Mexican war, and has paid more or
less! attention to it ever since, but has
never got it to work to his eompjete sati 3-
faction until the present time.
After the trial of the large gnu, the
parties adjourned to Economy and commen
ced this - trial of a small thsaapound gun,
built upon, the same.principle. Atter a
few discharged, Lieutenant Babbitt expres
sed himself perfectly satisfied with its
working, -and the firing ceased- It has
been- proVen that three men can work ,
this gnn.with BB much ease as a fall com•
plement of men can the ordinary piece,
and will- fire twenty times a minute.—
Again,' always working in the rear of the
gun, they do not run that risk from sharp
shooters to which artillery men under ordi
nary circumstances are subject. In a abort
time amore ample test of the gun will be
made, and all persons who feel interested
in improvements of this kind are cordially
invited to witness its working.

We condense the following items from
the Oil City Registsr
By a notice to our advertising eolgruns,
it will be seen that our city authorities
have passed an ordinance subjecting any
person carrying a lantern 012 pin fire in
any form, on the barges or oil boats lying
at the Wharf, within the Borough limits,
to a fine of .ten dollars for end spy every
offence. This may seem a little hard to
boatmen and shippers in some cases, for
instance, when the river is filling, and the
shipper wishes to pump his oil from one
boat to another, or when a boat gets bad
ly damaged on a Pond Freshet. Bat
these cases are comparatively rare, and
for the sake -of public safety, these parties
can certainly make some sacrifices.
All that remains to be done to ensure
the safely of their own, and the public
propery,..is for the oil pen to employ
sonleethetent night vinottniErin t.opatrol
the wharf and see . that the law is enforced.
Let this be done immediately.
The Pond Freshet season -will sop} bp
over, unlesa`we have a rise in the river.—
As a general thing the losses by this me
thod of transportation has been far leas
this year than last. This is owing to the
fact that many obstructions have been
removed from the creek by the indeed
gable efforts of Mr. A. S. Dobbs, the Su
p,erintcruiont of the Pond Freshets. We
are glad: to state thi.t ti t O iehiticmian has

Officers and 6oldier4s.
Quite a number of soldiers and officer's
elonging to different regiments, arrived
eeterday from tbe east in the noop train.
[any ofilifm were eufferingfrom wounds.
About half past one o'clock yesterday .
inorldniafire Was discovered `in the "front
part of the building occupied by Joseph
Dorrington as a feed store, which in a
short time wrapped the entire building in
flames, and communicated to the adjoin.
ing buildings, on either side, occupied by
Hostetter & Smith for the manufacture of
their bitters. The fire was first discovered
at the central front door of their establish
ment, from whence it went directly up
stairs into the office occupied by McGrew
it Stone, and McGrew dz Blackmore. The
building was pretty well filled with grain,
flour and feed, the third story being filled
with ear corn in tacks.
The building to the west of Dorriag•
ton's was slightly damaged, while that to
the east was, with Dorrington's, com
pletely destroyed. The buildings were
owned as follows : The western building
by Hostetter 41 Smith ; that occupied by
Dorrington, to John Irwin, Esq. ; and the
eastern building to Porter R. Friend.
Hostetter dc Smith's loss is between $5,000
and $6,000, no insurance, the loss being
principally paper. Porter R. Friend's
building was insured in the Pittsburgh In
surance Co. for $3,500, and Mr. Irwin's
building was insured for $3,000 in the
North American. The loss of McGrews
it Stone, and McGrews & Blackburn, is
but trifling. amounting to about $6O worth
of furniture, unless the books in the sate
are destroyed, in which case it is impossi
ble to tell the loss. The fire was without
doubt the work of a villainous incendiary,
who, it has been suggested, succeeded in
his diabolical attempt by pouring oil un
der the door, and setting it on fire. Some
rigid measures should be used to ferret
out these scoundrels, and bring them to
justice.
Dead.
Major James Burns, sr., of Juniata tp.,
Bedford county, died on the 17th inst., at
the advanced age of 103 yrars. He voted
for General Washington for Pregident,and
for every Democratic candidate for the
Presidency since. He was with Washing.
ton at Valley Forge, and participated in
tne battle of Brandywine. In private life
Major Burns Whl3 greatly beloved and re-
pemed by all who knew him.
Fire Alarm.
Tle alarm of fire at eleven o'clock last
night was occasioned by the flames break
ing out anew in the buildings that were
consumed night before last on Water et.
They were extingaished by the aid of a
section of hose to a fire plug, without any
assistance from the engines.

Theatre.--Farewell Benefit of
Hr. and tire. Conway.
These admirable actors take their fare
well benefit this evening, and we hope to
see a crowded house, not so mach for the
pecuniary advantage iz may be to them as
for the credit of our play goers, who, by ,
filling the house, will testify they can ap
preciate legitimate talent. The pieces se
lected are " Still Vigters run deep" and
" London Assurance," in both pf which
excellent plays Mr. and Mrs. Conway ap
pear, and sustain ahatticters in which they
are unrivalled. The John Mildc.tay of
Mr. Conway is a part he has made pecu
liarly his own, while the Lady Gay Spanker
of Mrs Conway is the most delightful
piece of comedy acting on the stage.

WASIIIYUTON. June 4 —The following
report was received at the Navy Depart

IT. S. Sno' Di , SOTO, F OF' MEXICO, t
Mhy 18, 1863,
SIR: I have the honor to inform you
that yesterday at noon we discovered the
smhke of g steamer and stood for it. Soon
after we made the ,tearner and pressed
after it to the very extent of our power.
At six r. N. she stopped and two boats
pushed off from her, carrying her officer,:
and crew. I immediately loitered and
took out of the steamer's boats her N in•
cipal ctlieers as a security for tho lives of
my own men and then boarded her.
As soon as the boats bad got alongside
the dames burst out as I had anticipated,
when I hoisted the recall. Afterwards
having had the assurance that there was
no &Lager of her blowing up, I went
near enough to tho burning ship to lead
our hose on board, but all efforts to sup
press the (lames were unavailing, and by
sunset the famous rebel ship Cuba sank
beneath the wat.,rm of the 'hall is latitude
28 47 longitude S 7 50,
It is estimated on reliable authority
that the cargo of the Cuba was worth in
Havre nearly four hundred thousand dol
lars, and if landed in Alabama would
have been worth from a million to a mil
lidn and a quarter. I have her officers
and (mew on board and 8401 cleilv-ef 03 * ,

Perrstitraan. June sth, 1863.
REMARKS.—The market during the week
was as dull as it could well be. the leading arti
cles scented to be all neglected, there being no
special demand for any of them, the sales were
limited and partook more of a retail than a
wholesale character, The weather has been
changeable, at the time of writing this report
it was decidedly pleasant, Our rivers have be
come low, and only the lightest draught boats are
able to navigate the Ohio, whilst in the Allegha
ny boating fur the present is suspended. Monet
matters.—The gold question remains as unsettled
as ever, there has been a number of changes since
our last, the people have become used to them.
eo that little agention is paid to the movements.
Money continues plenty and is easily obtained for
good paper at small rates. Our banks are doing
a safe and profitable.business, Some of our Banks
are going to open out nuder the new Govern
ment Banking Law. The war news from the
South, and South West continues to keep our
folks in rather an excited state, the news recei
ved being very conflicting, but taken till the whole
altogether favorable to our cause, we hope soon
to be able to announce the opening of the Missis
sippi. Grain, the business of the week was limi
ted, prices rule about the same, in fact there was
no demand, Pittsburgh always was a poor grain
market, the reason is very plain, we were never
able to oiler the same foci ities that could be ob
tained at other places, we have ne elevators .
This is about to be remedied, a company is now
forming, and already some twenty eight thous
ard dollars have been subscribed for the purp ose
f erecting one, the matter is in charge of the
right kind of persons, and will s on be under way,
we feel certain it will be a maces', and will be
one of the belt investments f.,r making money we l l
have among ms, those who have net subscribed.
