For ney Present--Interview With the Spirits of Napoleon, La fayette,Franklisr,DolnlP4,4ll4o- - President Receives some Good Advices. (Corrcspondenee of the Boston Gazette.] WASHINGTON April 23, 1863. A few evenings since Abraham-Lincoln, President of the United States ryas in duced to give a spiritual soiree in the crimson room at the White House, to leg the wonderful alleged supernatural power of Mr. Charles E. Shockle: - :It was my good fortune, as a friend of the medium to be present, the party consisting of the President, Mrs. Lincoln, Mr. Welles, Mr. Stanton, Mr. L -, of New York; and Mr. E ,of Philadelphia. We took our seats in the circle about eight o'clock; but the President was called sway shortly after the manifestations commenced, and the spirits, which had apparently assem bled to convince him of the power, gave visible tokens of their displeasure at the President's absence by pinching Mr. Stan • ton's ears and twitching Mr. Welles' beard. He soon returned ; but it was some time before barmcinY was restored, for, the mishaps to the Secretaries caused such bursts of laughter that the influence was very unpropitious. For some half hour the demonstration were of a physi nal - character—tables were moved and the picture of Henry Clay, which hangs on the wall, was swayed more than afoot, and the two :candellbras, presented by the Hey of Algiers, to President Adams, wcsret - Mte - e - • rel9dlt - ni49rl ` VG" lug It was nearly nine o'cloCk before Shockle was fully ander spiritual influence and so powerful were the subaequent man ife talons that twice during the evening restoratives were applied • for he was much weakened, and though I took no notes. I shall endeavor to give you as faithful an account as possible of what took place. Load rapping was heard at nine o'clock directly under the President's feet, and Shockle stated that an Indian desired to communicate. "Well; sir," said the President, "I should be happy to hear what his Indian majesty has to say. We have recently had, a visitation from our red brethren, and it was the only delegation—black, white . or blue—which did not volunteer some good advice about the conduct of the war." The medium then called for pencil and paper, and they were laid upon the table in eight of all. A handkerchief, was then taken , from Mr. Stanton, and the materials were carefully concealed from sight. In less spaZe of time than it has required me to write this, knocks weie, heard and the papei uncovered. To the surprise of all it read as follows : "Haste makes Waste, but delays cause vexations. Give vitality by energy. Use everyline ans to subdue. Proclamations are useless ; make a bold front and fight the enemy ; leave traitors at home to the care of loyal men. Less note of preparation, less parade and policy talk, and more ac tion. • "That is notlndian talk, Mr. Shockle," said the President, - "Who is Henry Knox," I suggested to the medium to ask who General Knox was, and before the words were from my lips the medium spoken in a strange voice : ' - "The first - Secretary of War," "Oh, yes, General Knox," said 'the President, whci - turning to the Secretary said: , "Stanton, that message is for you ; it is ficm your predecessor." Mr. Stanton made no- reply. . " I should like to ask 'General Knox," said the President, "if it is within the scope'of his ability to tell us - when . the re bellion will be put down." • In the same manner his message was re• ceivecl : "Washington Lafayette, Franklin, Wilbe'force, ,N4P.Pleon. and myself have held frequent consultation upon this point. We commend the following, from the Logan county (Ohio) Gazette, a sound Democratic paper, as "loyal talk" to which even the most radical supporter of the administration cannot object. It gees the whole pig, and by endorsing every word of it, in the sense in which it was meant, wellope to escape hereafter the mortifica tion of • being • called "Copperhead," "Rebel Sympathizer," "Butternut," and "Traitor " If we could add anything, to this confession 'of faith, we would cheer fully do it. It we could conscientiously say that we believe Deacon Bergner to be a christian, John W. Forney a patriot, and the Ccinstitution "a league with hell," we wonld:do so ; but at this point onr faith foliate. The Gazette says : "Having become entirely convinced that `the administration is .the Government,' we propose to express some truly loyal views in truly loyal words : "We hold that Abraham Lincoln is the greatest statesman of the age ; that he is thoroughly informed on all matters of Govertiment policy, and especially con versant with the intricacies of the tariff; that he is a very handsome man, a very refined man, a thoroughly educated man, and has had all the training requisite for a stiocesiortf Washington and Madison in. the Ritecutive chair. "Aral, Mr. Shockle," remarked the President, "I have seen strange things and heard rather odd remarks, but nothing which convinces me, except the pictures, that there is anything very heavenly about this.' I should like, if it were possible, to hear what Judge Douglas says about the war." "I'll try to get his spirit," said Mr. %odic ; "hut it sometimes happens, as it did tonight in the case of the Indian, that, though first impressed by one spirit, I yield to another more, powerful. It perfect silence is maintained, I will see if we cannot induce linos to send for Mr. Douglas." • Three raps were given, signifying assent to the proposition. Perfect silence was maintained, and, after an interval of per haps three minutes, Mr, Shockle rose quickly from his chair and stood up be hind it, resting his left aria on the back, his right thrustinto his bosom, in a voice such as no one could mistake who had ever heard Mr. Douglas, lie . spoke, I shall not pretend to quote the language. It was eloquent and choice. He urged the Pres• Moat to throw aside all advisers who hesi tate about the policy to be pursued, .and to lister. to the wishes of the people who would sustain him at all points if his aim waif, as he helieied it was to restore the Union. He said that there were Burrs ann Blennerhassetts living ; but that they wopld wither, before.the popular, approval which wriuldfallowone or two victories, such as he thought must take place ere long. The turning point in this war will be the proper use of these victories. If wicked men in the first hours of success thinicit time to devote their attention to party ) the war will be prolonged ; but iI vietory is followed up by energetic action, all will be well. ' 44 3 tielieve every, word of that," said the President, "whet her it comes from spirit or homan.". Mr. Shockle was much prostrated after this*, and nt Mrs. Lincoln's request it was thought best to adjourn tee dance which, when resumed, I shall give you a„ account of. , . try Hour whole country- 7 -and our home is in the bright satin' sun V,. The stock in first hands is light, while there can be no receipts by river until we have a rise, of which there is no appearance at present. Besides the New Yorkers will soon have to open up the market in order to fill their June contracts. These and similar ones are the arguments used. and as they seem inclined to hold on their faith will be tested by their works. On the other hand buyers say, It is all speculation; there is plenty of oil up the river waiting to come down ; that the weather is cloudy, we shall soon have rain and a rise in the river and that crude oil will come down to 10@l2e. Holders say they "can't see it," and here we let the mat er rest. OIL Cm . . June 2nd. - • • The market continues dull and inactive. PITTSBURGH PRODUCIE MARKET OVPICR Or THE DAMS POST.). Wednesday, uno 3d, 1863. Remarks—The dull season is now fairly opened and is perceptible in our daily operations. Our rivers have become low and only the lightest draught boats can naviagate at, present. For the leading articles of trade the demand was limited J• KNOX No, '23 Fifth stroot. and entirely local, large sales being suspended for the present. The opening of the books we referred to yesterday for the purpose of sub scribing stock for the erection of a new Grain El vator was attended with a good deal of success. The affair is in the right hands, and is bound to succeed. Grain—The market continues dull, flat and unprofitable. There is nothing doing. We never witnessed lees disposition to operate. Groceries moderately active, so far as the home demand is concerned. Prices remain as last quoted. The supply in first hands is ample for all ordinary purposes. Bacon was in fair demand principally for home use. The rates as compared with other descriptions of meat were low. Our dealers - have a good supply , on hand, sufficient to last through the warm season. -..J. R. OLDDEN Flour continues very dull with no demand for any except small lots to meet the wants of the local trade. The receipts were hght and sales likewise. Prices exhibited no change. The supply in first hands was sufficient for all ordinary pur poses, Among the sales were 125bbls Extra, $5 50@I 75 ; Extra, Fatuity, $6 5 04;6 75; 100 bbls do on private terms. Sales from wagon at various prices, Hay—Market steady with a fair amount of re ceipts. Sales at the scales ranged from $l2 50@ 15 50 par ton. The rates of baled from store were higher. Poteitoes—The market contains an ample supp , y for all purposes. Prices continue to droop; we quote nominally at from 44@56, as per qual ity. Batter—The .market has exhibited no im provement. We note regular sales at 12@14c, as per Quality. Egivi continue scarce, receipts having fallen off. We note sales 12 bbls packed, 13@)133,¢c per doe. Cheese—Sales of 75 boxes new W 11,10 e cream, lie. . Fleh—ln fair demand. Herring. sales 20 bbls new Bahl nlore, $7 t other descri °Vona unchanged. Daeon—ne market was steady but not very active. 11'41e-small lots were counted it would exhibit a very fair amount of transactions. Dried Fruit—The market was not active. Sales 70 bush Peaches, $2 75@2 50 per bushel; 60 bush Apples; $1 2.5(g/1 40. There was very little done in Provisions to day. The only transaction recorded was a sale of 100 bbls pew country mess pork at $l2. It is in - ferred from theprice that the quality rf thepork cannot be first-rate, inasmuch as that figure is fully 500 below the market for good brands, and would eommand additional purchasers' Holders are geneXally firm in asking $l3. New oity-pack off is steady at $l3 50, though no sales aremaking. Bulk shoulders meet with some request at `336@ but-they are not to be had at less than 33tc. Bulk sides are quiet at 4 3 4gilic loose. Bacon remains nominal at 4Nqie.:ic for shoulders and - 531s@filie -for sides. Prime- city-rendered lard would - find something of a market at 9*, but there is none offering at less than 9Y.0. Plain Hams are held at 84e, canflissed and peeked. -S.
