CITY AND HIGII:OBOOD INTRILIWINOB
Reception of the 134th Regi
ment.
Owing to some cause or other the arriv
al of the 184th Regiment was delayed un
til two o'clock yesterday afternoon, at
which time the train came slowly down
Liberty street to the head of Smithfield.
Arid right here, in the commencement of
the reception ceremonies an accident oc
curred which came very near speeding a
pall of sorrow, rather than rejoicing, over
the assembled multitude. The horss at
tached to the carriage intended for e the
Subsistence Committee were restive in
the midst of such a throng, but when the
engine - came down to - where they were
standing, they could no longer be restrain.
ed, but dashed off. through the crowd.--
The driver sprang from his seat, and es
caped unhurt. The horses ran straight
towards the huge telegraph pole, on the
corner of. Liberty and Smithfield streets,
and the carriage striking it, was broken so
badly as to of no farther use. The horses
were disengaged, and taken awa.
The excitement being over i nregard to
the 'runaways, the procession formed as
follows :
Band.
J. R. Hunter, Esq., Chief Marshall.
Carriage drawn by four white horses,
and beautifully decorated with flags, con
taining the Mayors of Pittsburgh and
Allegheny. Hon, P. C. Shannon and
Hon. Win. M. Francis, of Lawrence Co.
Carriage drawn by four beautiful bays,
also decorated with beautiful flags, con
taining gentlemen of the Subsistence and
Sanitary Committees.
Provost Guard, Captain Wright.
One Hundred and Thirty-fourth Regi
ment, Col. O'Brien.
The procession moved down Smithfield'
street to the Monongahela House, when
after being formed into line on Smithfield
street, they were welcomed by Judge Shan
non in a brief address. He then proposed
three cheers for the old flag, three cheers for
the United Etates, and three for Abraham
Lincoln, all of which ware given. Mr.
FranCis then on the part of Col. O'Brien.
responded in a beautiful little speech, ofl
only a few minutes duration. At the con-1
elusion of the speech of Mr. Francis, Judge
Shannon again took the stand, and on the
part of the 134th regiment, preilented Col.
O'Brien with a very handsome horse, sad•
dle and bridle. Mr. Francis, on the part
of Col. O'Brien returned thanks to the
regiment for the horse, and to the Judge
for the part taken by him in the presenta
tion. Hon. 13. C. Sawyer was then intro•
duced, and after a few brief remarks gave
way to Hon. A. C. Alexander, Mayor of
Allegheny, who was introduced by Judge
..Shannon, with the remark that misfor
tunes never come Single. He welcomed
the boys in a few affectionate remarks, and
then the cry became general for Colonel
O'Brien. The Colonel is evidently a very
modest man, and appeared somewhat em
barrassed. lie told the boys he could not
make a speech, and he knew that they did
not expect him to make one, but he thanked
thew for the present of the horse. The
ceremonies now being concluded, the
colonel retired from the balcony, and join
ing the troops in the street, he mounted
his new charger, and giving the order,
they all moved to the City Hall, where re.
freshments were served up. After parta
king orwhich they scattered around town
until the departure of the train should bear
them to their triends. The ceremonies
were very interesting, and were admirably
conducted.
Another Regiment Arrived.
The One Hundred and Thirty•Beventh
regiment, nine months' men, arrived at
Caw) Curtin on Wednesday. The comps•
siva pomp osing this regiment are from the
counties of Schuylkill, Blair, Clinton, But
ler and Crawford. They number 729 men,
tinder the command of Col. Kidoo.
Designs for' National Currency,
Secretary Chase informed a delegation
that he should distribute the work of 2n.
graving designs for the national curren7
to various parties, to prevent monopo;y
and to secure tbe early execution of the
work.
Crops.
The crop prospects in Wiaconsin are
pronounced as more flattering now than at
any time this Beason for a number of years.
Winter wheat looks better in Ogle coun
ty, 111., than it has for a long time. There
is double the amount of it sown than in
any previous year.
The evidence is still contradictory, about
the prospect of the . growing wheat in New
York State. - In same localities, it is said,
"Wheat never looked better, while in th 4
next torn, perhaps, we bear of farmers
plowing up their wheat fields, while others
give no promise of a crap worth harvest-
Ang.
National Loan.
A Washington authority says that up to
this time subscriptions to the national pan

Arrest of Townsend.
The notorious Canadian outlaw and
murderer, Townsend, with whose career
many of our readers are familiar, has been
discove
anred and arrested at Ann Arbor,
Michig.
New Postoifice.
A. new postoffice has been established in
Beaver county, near the Allegheny county
line, called Wall Rose. Jacob Breiten
stein, Esci., has been appointed postmas

Tobacco.
The valley of the Connecticut river will
thistle Wen be appropriated to the culture
of. tobacco. In 1860, over six millions
pounds of tobacco were raised in the State
and this year the amount will probably be
doubled. Connecticut is the tenth State
in , tbe Union in the amount of tobacco
raised.

!heatre.--First Night of Peep
'0 Day.
A thronged house greeted the first pro
duction of the new drama of " Peep 'o
Day." It is one of the most thrilling plays
ever performed here, abounding in the
most stirring and, exciting, striking and ef
fecting tableaux. Mrs. Conway captivated
and thrilled all hearts, It is difficult to
imagine a finer piece of acting than her
portraiture of Ka e Kavanagh. Mr. Con
way brought down the house repeatedly by
his irresistably catching humor. Mr.
Henderson was extremely effective as
Harry Kavanagh. Mr. Chippendale pleas
ant and easy in the good priest 0' Cleary.
Miss Eberle fascinating as Mary Grace,
and the entire company perfect in their
respective characters. The piece was a
glorious success. The epilogue spoken
by Mrs. Conway was written for her by
Wallace Theater, Esq., of the Boston
Evening Gazette. Her splendid rendition
of it creates the wildest enthusiasm and
applause.

It will be seen by a glance at our adver

trian organization will enter our city on
Monday the 15th day of June, and con
tinue on Tuesday and Wednesday. This
company bears a reputation second to
none now traveling. The proprietors, we
are informed, are both performers of note,
and one of them in particular. Mr. Dan
Gardner the punier clown,) has had
more than usual experience in this branch
of amusement. This establishment, for a
period of nearly five months last winter,
was the centre of attraction in Philadel
phia. The beauty and elite of the city
congregating there nightly in large num

themselves upon being able to witness
this grand Equestrian display. We hearti

hey will never repent visiting Pittsburgh.

TOWN OT AUSTIN DESTROYED

THE SALE OF FIVE-TWENTIES
d ASHINGTON, May 28.—An official dig
patch was received to-day by the War De•
partment from Gen. Ellet, commanding
the Ram fleet, dated Helena, Arkansas,
May 25th, which says; As my command
was descending the river from Memphis on
the evening of the 22d, the Commissary
and Quartermaster's boat was fired into
from the Missiasippi shore, by a band of
the enemy with two pieces of artillery,
when about six miles above Austin. I
returned yesterday and landed my force.
The enemy had a few hours before my ar•
rival captured a small trading steamer
and burned her, taking her crew captives
and appropriating her freight. I could
obtain no intelligence from the inhabitants
by which to guard my movements. My
cavalry under Major Hubbard, 200 strong, i
came np with the enemy 2000 strong, and
all mounted, 8 miles out. The fight last
ed nearly two hours. The Major was com
pelled to take shelter in a favorable bot
tom, when he succeeded in repelling the
enemy and finally drove him off before
the infantry could come to his relief. Our
loss was two killed and nineteen wounded,
mostly slight. The enemy left five dead I
upon the field and one Lieutenant mortal
ly wounded; also 22 stand of arms. We
captured three prisoners. I burned the
town of Austin, having first searched every
building as the fire progressed and reach
ed their hiding places; the discharge of
loaded fire arms was like a volley of
musketry and two heavy explosions of
powder also occurred. Of Major Hub
bard and of his battallion I cannot speak
too highly; they are deserving of all praise,
Every officer and man of the little force is
reported to have acted with the most dis
tinguished bravery and prompt obedience.

maintain his investment of the town, and
repel any attack on his rear.

General Grant.
The Washington Chronicle, in the course
of an elaborate biographical notice of
Gen. Grant, has the following, describing
his personal appearance:
Gen. Grant is about five feet nine inches
high, has sandy hair and whiskers, blue
eyes, a firm and determined mouth, a well
shaped nose, and a complexion that shows
the effects of exposure. He is very far
from what is called a handsome man. He
has a good form, very square shoulders,
and generally stands squarely on his feet,
never resting on one leg, or lounging
against a support. He never uses profane
or extravagant language. He is almost a
model of temperance, seldom drinking at
all, but he smokes continually. In con
versation he is rarely animated, except
among the most intimate and familiar
companions. He prides himself on his
horsemanship. At the battle of Monterey
he was ordered to carryall order to a point
where he had to pass under the fire of a;
battery. He put his horse into a tull gal
lop, threw himself off on one side, after
the:manned ot the Indians, holding on by
the horse's mane and by one leg thrown i
over the cantle of the saddle, and in this
position leaped a fonr•foot wall. Gen.
Grant was married soon after he left the
regular army, and has now three children,
one of whom, a boy about six years old,
is nearly as good a rider as his father.
General Grant is an unassuming, modest
man, has no personal enemies, never
speaks ill of any otte, even of those who
injure him, knows nothing about politics,
has no ambition for office or distinction,
bat only desires to do his duty. General
Hailed: described him very well when he
said : " What I like about Grant is that
when he is ordered to do anything he sets
right about doing it. There are no ob.
Jections or evasions or suggestions of de
lay—not a moment's rest until the order
is executed as well as he can do it with
the means at his command." Grant is
not a man of the highest order of intel
lectnal ability, but hie operations hare
shown him to possess strategical skill of
the highest character, particularly those
since he has been his own chief. flut he
is not one thitt we Should set down as a
great man ; and a person seeing him but
once would almost surely have a mean
opinion of his powers. Paradoxical as it
may seem, it has been General Grant's
great good fortune to have been always
underrated. Newspaper correspondents,
who make it their business to criticise
and dictate, not to narrate events; poli
ticians who have places to till, and con
tractors—all bare j)ined in one general
and unbroken dentLlciation of General
Grant.
£he conqueror of Fort Donelson, had
.e been a politicion, might have been run
/or Senator from Illinois, and. then some
one else would have fought the battle of
Shiloh, and the twenty days' campaign of
Vicksburg. Had any political party un
dertaker, so persistently to make a popu
lar hero out of Grant as they have oat of '
some generals wno have never won a suc•
cess, there would be an anti-Grant party,
and another wrangle about "political
generals,
.h'ortunately, Grant is a soldier
and nothing but a soldier; he has said that
he wans to see this war through and then
go back to Galena and sell hardware and
leather. ..He has never had a day's leave
of absence since he entered the service,
;hough his family have twice visited him
in camp, fiis qualiites are not, there
fore, apprerkted by the people, though
they are by toe government; which may
now feel as great a pride"in having sustain
ed Gen. Grant as in any other instance
when they have withstood popular clamor
and private expostulation.
