~ajor-General Ulysses S. Grant.
Major• General Ulysses S. Grant was
born at Point Pleasant, Clairmont county,
Ohio, April 1822, .and is, consequently,
forty-one years-of age. He entered West
Point Military Academy, from Ohio, in
. ..
1830, and graduated with hOners oti the
30th of June, 1843. In his class we find
the names of Generals Franklin, Reynolds,
Quimby, Peck, J. J. Reynolds, Augur,,
C. J. Hamilton, Steele, Jiadah, and-others
in the Union army, besides several now
in the Rebel Service. On the let of July,
1848, he was attached, as brevet second
lieutenant, to the Fourth Infantry. He
was promoted second lieutenant at Corpus
Christi on the 30th of September, 1845,
and served as such through Mexico, under '
General Taylor, at Palo Alto, Resaca de
la Palma and Monterey, and under Gen
eral Scott, from Vera Cruz to the city of
Mexico, and was twice proinoted for his
bravery. He was brevetted first lieuten•
ant, September 8, 1847, for gallant and ,
meritorious conduct at the battle of Ma- !
lino del Rey, and on the 12th cf the same;
month he was brevetted captain for gal
lant and meritorious conduct at the battle l'
of Chepultepec. In the report of Captain '
Horace Brooks, Second Artillery, of the
I battle of Chepultepec, he says:
"I succeeded in reaching the fort with
a few men. Here Lieutenant U. S Grant
and a few more men of the Fourth Infant- I
ry found me, and, by a joint movement,
after an obstinate resistance, a strong work
was carried and the enemy's right was i
ecrmpreanyt i erireci.
The report of Major Francis Lee, coin-
I
mending thia - Fottrth Infantry, of the battle ]
at Chepultepec, says:
"At the first barrier the enemy was in,
strong force, which rendered it necessary
to advance with caution. This was done,
and when the head of the battalion was
within short musket range of the barrier,
Lieut. Grant, Fourth Infantry and Captain
Brooks, Second Artillery, with a few men
of their respective regiments, by a hand
some movement to the left, turned the
right flank of the enemy, and the barrier
- was carried. * * * * *
Second Lieutenant Grant behaved with
distingnished gallantly on the 13th and
14th.
The report of Brevet Colonel John Gar- I
land, commanding the First Brigade, of
the battle of - Chepultepec, stays :
"The rear of the enemy had made a
dart& behind a breastwork, from which
they were driven by detachments of. the
Second Artillery, under Captain BrOoke,
and the Fourth Infantry, under Lieutenant
Grant, supported by other regiments of
.the division, after a short bat sharp con
flict.
* -'' * I recognized the command
as it came up, mounted a howitzer on the
top of a convent, which, under the direc
tion of Lieutenant Grant, Quarternaneter
'of the Fourth Infantry, and Lieutenant
Lendrnm, Third Artillery, annoyed the
enemy considerably. *, * * I must
not omit to call attention to Lieut. Grant
of the bourth Infantry, who acquitted
himself most nobly upon several occaeione
ander my own observation."
General Worth's report Sept. 16 - , also,
spoke highly of , Lieut. Grant. He was'
regimental Quartermaster from Apriltl,!'
1847, and in 1852 was ordered to Oregon,
where in August, 1853, he was pm:wiled;
to cartaie. When he resigned the service
on the 31 of -July, 1854 he was a full captain,
in the Fourth Infantry, of regulars. After;
his resignation he settled in St, Liiitis;
county, Missou i, and 'moved from there!
to Galena. Illinois, in 1860. ~ .
Upon the breaki, g din of the present!
war he offered his services to Governor;
Yates, and wakappointed -4. id to the Com-1
mender in Chief of Illinois Militia, and'
Mustering Officer for the State, from April
15 to Jon e 211, 1861. He was next com
missioned
Colonel of the Twenty first
Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, and he
served with his regiment until promoted a
Brigadier General of Volunteers, with his '
commission and rank from the 17th of
May, 1861. He was engaged as Colonel
and Acting Brigadier General in several of
the contests in Southeastern Missouri, and
among hie most pranfeworthy acts was the
occupation of Paducah and stoppage or
communioation and supplies to the rebels
via the Tennessee and Cumberlandrivers.
The manner in which he conducted_ the
battle of Belmont is still fresh in our read-
pre minds. He was next appointed corn
mender of the District of Cairo, by Gen.
Ileck, oommaridini Department of the
West.
After the capture of Fort Ffenry, Feb.

Old Wash S--is known by almost
every railroad engineer, at least by repu
tation. A better engineer I never knew.
But Wa3h had one failing—ho would
drink ; and if he was particularly elated
with aqy goad fortune, he was sure to get
- full of whiskey; and though in that state
never known to transgress the rules of the
road by running on another train's time,
still he showed. the spirit' which controlled
him by running at a terrible rate of speed,
At one time the company purchased a
couple of engines from the E-----road,
on which Wash was running. The en
gines were very large, and were intended
to be very fast, being put up on seven
feet wheels. From the circumstance of
their being planted between the spokes
of their "drivers," that is, having a piece
:of plank set in between the spokes, the
"boys" used to call them the "plank
roads." They were tried, and, though
generally considered capable of making
'•fast time" under favorable circamstare
ces, they didn't suit that road, so they
were condemned to the "gravel-pit," until
they could receive an overhauling and le
"cut down a peg or two." Wash had al
ways
considered that theae engines wer e I
much abused, and bad never received fair
treatment ; so be obtained permission of
~I,e- , ett , tere.act.se- trt t-e tette one et them
Into the shop and repairit. At it he went,
giving the engine a thorough overhauling,
fixing her valves for the express purpose'
of running fast, and making alterations in
minor portions of her machinery. At
last he had the job completed, and took i
1 her out on the road. After running one 1
or two trips of freight trains to smooth j
her brasses, end try her working, he was I
chalked for the fastest train on the road, I
the B--- Express. The "boys" on
j the road were anxious for the result, for
it was expected that "Old Wash" and 1 1
the "plank reader" would "astonish the
I I natives" that trip, Wash imbibed rather !
I freely, and was somewhat under the in- '
I thence of liquor when the leaving time. of
his train came, though not enough to be
noticed ; but as minute after minute pass_
ed, and the train with which it connected
1 did not make its appearance, Wash, who
kept drinking all the time, grew tighier
and tighter, till at last, when it did come
in, an hour and a half behind time, Wash
was pretty comfortably tight; so much so
that some of the men who bad to go on
the train with him looked rather 'skeery,'
for the knew that they might expect to be
towed as fast as the engine could nat.--
How fast that was no one knew, her seven
foot wheels promised a near approach to
flying.
At last they started,, and I freely con
fess that I never took as fast a ride in my
life. ' [Wash had got me to fire for him.] '
Keeping time was out of the question as
far as I was concerned, furl had my hands
fall to keep the "fire box" full, and hold
my hat on. We bad not run more ten
miles, before the brakeman, ordered by
the 'conductor, pat on the brakes, impeol
-inrotir speed somewhat; not stopping us,
for we were, on , 3 a heavy down grade, • and
Was; It:had:her 'wide-open,' and working

tor came over and begged Wash not to
•riut 'so fast, for the passengers were half
scared oat of their senses. Wash simply
pointed to the directions to use all.due ex
eitionj-to ',Deka ap time and never shut off
a bit. So 'oh we flew to B----, • fort
voiles from where we started: and the first
stoppingeplace for the train. Here the
conductor came to Wash again, and told

Ye last of all the patriot band
Who with our Washington did stand
And stayed his strong arm of command
In Freedom's holy strifb!
Wegreot you, venerable 'Ores I
To loftiest notes we strike our lyres.
Our hearts ablaze with patriot fires,
Thank Heaven that gfle YOU life.
When battle - thunderasho - ok the ground
And stern hearts trembled at the sound.
When death on gory fleitla was found—
Steadfast ye kept you
Ye fought like men at Bun!, er
And felt the patriot arddr thrill
Your-inmost soul and nerve you still
To meet the oppressoet hosts.
On liionmouth'istiloody plain ye stood ;
Ye crossed the Delaware's wintry flood :
At Yorktown proved Yotif courage good
Unwavering filled-s'o=olElc°
On every well-fought baffle -field,
Where conaradeseidood their valor sealed
To deadliest onset tie'er dssl yield.
Nor ever turned your face.
Hail I honored braves! oVe more receive
The homage that your sena would give,
And Oh! a natriot's blowing leave
Before you pass away I .
Your number dwindles year by- year;
Your steps to Heaven draw ever near;
Your glory rrrows more bright and clear,
As dawns th' eternal day,.
