Exports of Petroleum.
The transportation of petroleum has
become an important item in the trade,
and adds largely to the cost of the article
on the seaboard and in Europe. There
is a company in England which is building
ships with tanks expressly for this article
of freight, by which the cost of sea-tarry
. lag will be reduced and safety insured
- It now becomes important to invent a
railway car which-till carry petroleum in
.bulk, whence it, can be pumped into the
skips, and thus save the expense as well
as the freight both ways of the bar
rels. A Mr. Myers, of New York, has
devised a model . of a new car, or rather
a new invention for this purpose. He
proposes to make two strong cylinders
or barrels of Iron, the outer edges being
fittsd with rims like the rime of railway
wheels. The two barrels thus prepared
and connected with each other, form a
car, and can be rolled with their contents
of oil along the rail track from the springs
in the interior to the side of the vessel in
New York, pumped out and returned
empty to the springs for a new freight. A
photograph likeness of the car can be seen
at the Oil Exchange, and a view of it will
be found interesting to all interested in
the purchase'or shipment of oil.
CANT. ROBINSON, of Cincinnati, has done
himself credit by naming his new boat C.
t -
P. Miller, in honor of our old friend the
river editor of the Daily Cormnercial.
Air. Miller thus alludes to it : Capt. Newt.
Robinson's new steamer, C. D. Miller,
arrived from Gallipolis and Portsmouth,
yesterday, ladened principally with iron
and.ialt. She discharget the bulk of her
iron over at Covington, and reships 300
barrels of salt on the ladonia, for the
Wabash river. The Miller was built at
' , Portfimonth, and is a neat craft. with ca
pacity for 300 tuns. She is propelled by
four screws, and draws very little water.
We tip our beaver to Capt. Robinson. in
return for the compliment paid us in the
name of his new steamer.
Military Executions.
The first military executions took place
on Johnson Island, last Friday, William
Corbin and T.. P. McGraw being the vie.
time, having been found guilty of carrying
- , mails and giving information to the rebels.
The Mansfield Herald, whose editor was
present at the execution, says:
The prisoners were then blindfolded,
-the Provost Marshal gave the necessary
command to the execution party, and at
- precisely twenty five minutes of 2 o'clock,
McGraw and Corbin paid the penalty of
their acts. The firing was instantaneous,
,ao that the sixteen muskets seemed to
make but one report. Thu men both fell
back upon their coffins, and died without
6 Struggle. :Corbin did not move a muscle
McGraw gasped twice. *
-Nothing occurred to derange the order
or mar the solemnity or impressiveness of
the occasion. The firing was worthy of
note.- The execution party consisted of
82 men, divided into four quads, two of
the squads being reserve. The sixteen
-Aaots fired, eight at each man, seemed as
the dot of one man. In the 15 muskets
there were fourteen balls and forty-two
hockshot, being seven balls and twenty
one buckshat for each of the condemned.
Upon examination of the bodies, it was
'found that 28 balls and shot had taken
'effect in the breast of each, within the cir
cle of a few inches.

Wool Growing.
A meeting of wool growers was held in
Cadiz, Ohio, last Saturday, and the fol
lowing resolutions were passed :
RESOLVED, That it is for the interest of
wool-growers to establish a uniform price
thoughont the country, and for this pur
pose a price should be established by this
meeting, and a corresponding committee
appointed to confer with other sections of
the country.
RESOLVED, That in the opinion of this
meeting, the medium wool of this county
should bring one dollar per pound this
season, and that we will use our exertions
to obtain that price.
The question of the propriety of clip
ping sheep without washing was taken up
by the meeting, and after thorough die
mission, it was generally agreed that it
would be to the advaLtege of wool-grow
ers, not only in a monetary point of view.
but would save the grower the very disa
greeable task of washing sheep; and also
save the sheep the injuries incurred by
washing; and as an expression of their
feelings on this subject, the following reso•
lotion was adopted ;
RESOLVED, That we agitate this ques
tion continually until we abolish the wash
ing of sheep.
It was resolved by the meeting that five
cents should be the highest price paid for
clipping stock sheep.
The Zanesville Times, in a sensible arti •
cle in regard to the demand for wool and
the profits made by eastern speculators.
says; _
As the wool buying season approaches
we have a word or two of advice to give
those who have this precious article for
sale. Wool is going to bring good prices
this season, as the scarcity of cotton and
the amount required for the manufacture
of soldiers' blankets and clothing will
make a large demand. It is but fair that
the producers should receive a share pf
the profits annually Wade on the wool by
eastern buyers, and this season we think
that farmers will lose nothing by holding
their wool until they receive a compensa
tion for it equal to its present value. In sel
ling their wool farmers should demand U.
S. "greenbacks": in payment, and take
nothing else. ;Eastern manufacturers send
their agents oat here in the west to buy np
the wool and pay for it notes on eastern
banks, many of which are altogether
worthless, or at least at a considerable
discount. Mach of the eastern money in
circulation in the west is counterfeit, and
it is greatly inferior to the currency fur
nished by the government. Let it be
clearly understood that wool can be bought
for no other but "greenbacks' or notes on
our State bank, and dealers will pay
that kind of money. We think these two
suggestions are worthy of consideration.

Hamill Challenged.
Josh. Ward, who was last summer de

two races, in a dialling match en the
Schuylkill, again throws down the gaunt
let and challenges Hamill for a race on
the Hudson for $5OO a side, the race to
come off early in July. We do not know
what Mr. Hamill's views may be, but as
Ward seems desirous for a "fair field and
no favor, amiss Hamill is now champion,
would it have been any thing more than
just for him to have said something about
"defraying expenses," or at least have
come half way to meet him ? Five hen •
dred dollars, even if Hamill were to win
it, would scarcely pay the expenses of the
trip.

the impression that the number ergaged

Thus the Stonewall Jackson was the

before that the Annie Childs; the Thistle
was called the Cherokee, while the 'lase
