- We hope we will be excused for mg
. gesting to' our readers, both old and young,
"the necessity 'cif exercieing coolness and
prudence, amid the manretartling rumors
that are now afloat in the city in reference
• to the approach date rebels. While every
precaution should be taken to prevent an
alarm, and every arrangement should be
promptly made to go to the assistance ofi
those who are in, the most immediate dan
er, all should remember that first reports
a r e the most alarming. Indeed we have
not heard of a battle or a raid since the corn
ruencement of this unfortunate rebellion,
in which the first statement of it did not
largely exceed the true account subse
quently received. That five thousand
rebel cavalry are now in Morgantown, we
do not believe, because we are very confi
dent that so large a body of men and hors
es could not be moved any great distence,
without news of their approach having
reached us before this time, and it is equal
ly impossible that so great a number
of troops of that kind could or would be
spared from the main body of the rebel
army, for the purpose of making
mere raid into Western Virginia or the
border counties of oar own State, which,
in our opinion, is all the most sanguine
rebel officer could hope to accomplish.
However, as we have before remarked,
-all hands should prepare with a will for
the worst, remembering at the same time
terlistan to all the flying rumors with
several grains ofallowance; and not per
mit themselvestn be frightened, flurried
or eicited.
A. soldier who goes into battle trembling
with fear or excitement is of very little
- account, and is almost sore, if for shame
sake he does remain in the ranks, to be
hit, either by his companions or the enemy.
It is' the perfectly cool, intrepid soldier,
who is devoid of everything like flur
blustering, or excitement, who is to r te
depended on. The men whom you see and
bear the most conspicuous on the corners
and in the drinking houses, retailing with
large additions everything they hear and
drawing upon their fruitful immaginations
for stories that never had an existence,
are always, in every- emergency, whether
of war, flood or fire the last to be counted
en, and rarely to be believed. But we
did not intend to say so much, and will
corclude by again urging our readers not
to become unduly excited,or unuecesearily
alarmed. Let every man, should danger
beset our heretofore peaceful homes, act
promptly, cooly and bravely, and no seri
ous trouble need be apprehended.

, mportanee of the Telegraph.
Yesterday while the numerous conflict
ing and alarming rumors, in relation to the
rebels having marched upon, taken and
planted their banners upon the Court
House of Morgantown, were in circula
lation, terrifying the timid and arousing
people of all classes, the great want or the
lightning mode of conveying intelligence
tvas 'seriously felt. In times like these,
when there is a possible, if not a probable
danger of the rebels surprisingour people,
who lire in the border counties, such as
Fayette, .Greene and Washington, plunder
ing the defenceless citizens of all their
movable property, and applying the torch
to what they cannot carry away, it is of tho
utmost importance to those citizens that
they should be in a position to communi
cate every hour with prominent points,
where men, arms and ammunition can be
at once forwarded to their relief. As it is
now, we are nearly, if not quite four hours
from Uniontown, and a body of cavalr
such as ran into Chambessburg could, be
y
fore word would get to us, and we be able
to reach the scene of action, supposing
that scene to be the county seat of our
neighbor, Fayette, carry off and destroy
that whole region of country. In an
economical point of view it would be
a saving for both the State and the
National Government to establish tel
egraph lines in every direction, where there
is even a possibility of our people being
surprised by either a domestic or foreign
fJe. All loyal citizens who are despoiled
of their property during this rebellion have
the undoubted right to claim and collect
damages from the government. Of course,
in this view of the case, it would be cheap
er to expend a few hundred or thousand
dollars, if by so doing the rebels could be
foiled in one of their schemes of plunder,
than to pay those who suffered a million or
two in damages. Besides in the case now
referred to, there is no doubt, if the gov
ernment would advance the money to build
a line of telegraph from this city along the
Pittsburgh and Connelhville road to
Uniontown, and front thence to Morgan
town, the railroad company or other capi
talists would, when peace was restored,
arid the government desired to part with
the improvement, refund the amount of
cost. By all means there should be a line
of telegraph established on this route, with
the least possible delay.
Money Getting Plenty.
The amount required to pay off the
army, up to the lst of March is near sixty
million of dollars. More than the entire
receipts of gold from California received
any year. This amount of capital added to
the already flush money market must slim
ulate all branches of trade. One who is well
posted says that over h half million of dol
lars will come into Pittsburgh during the
next thirty days. By the Ist of May it
will take thirty millions more to pay up
the troops, when more money will be flow
ing in. This, with the amount paid oat
here on Government contracts for iron
gunboats, the building of steamers, the
receipts fromeoal, the outlay in the ' ltirge
number orbuildings going on in our city
will give farmers and all others plenty of
money toinwrove in all directions.

The excitement last evening at 7 o'clock,
in reference to the appearance of the rebels
at Morgantown, and their supposed inten
tion to march on Uniontown had riot aba
ted, but was rather on the increase. So i
many conflicting stories were in circula
tfonThat it was hard to get at the truth.
In the afternoon about 3 o'clock, a mass
meeting was held at Wilkins Hall, which
was presided over by P. R. Brunet, Esq.,
assisted by a large number of Tice Pram
dents and Secretaries.
A Committee having been appointed tc
prepare resolutions made the following re
port, which was accepted :
Resolved, That 500 men row sign a roll,
Pledging themselves to go into the 15th
Regiment Pennsylvania Militia, to fill up
said regiment.
Resolved, That all wishing to form new
companies now enrol themselves into corn
parties of eighty, rank and file, and elect
their officers.
Resolved, That companies of cav
alry be formed.
The resolutions were adopted uaani
mously. Gen. Howe read to the meeting
the following dispatches from Wheeling :
WHEELING, April 28th, 1862.
fStu : We:are in imminent danger. The
rebel forces are within thirty miles, burn •

were at Morgantown at 4 p. m., yesterday.
H. J. SAM L , EI S, A. G.
There was some discussion as to where
the troops should go, after which it was
decided to meet at the Monongahela
wharf at 6 o'clock, and proceed up the
river.
We were informed last evening at 10
o'clook, that no troops had left, or would
leave last night for the scene of action,
although a large number were anxious,
fully armed and errlipped, in line, ready
to go, but did not know where they could
be used to the best advantage.
Democratic Club.
The meeting of the Democratic Club o
Allegheny county, which was held last
evening, at the hall, on the corner of Fifth
And Smithfield streets, was both large and
enthusiastic. Hon. Charles Shaler ad
dressed the Club in his ustial forcible, log
ical and eloquent style. This organization
promises to do mach good in rebuking
and holding in check fanaticism, and we
hope all its meetings will be largely at•
tended.
From Harrisburg—Goy. Cur tin
ou the Raid.
Gen, Thos. M. Howe, Assistant Adiu
taut General, received a dispatch from
Gov. Curtin, yesterday, in which he says
that he has no power to call out the mili
tia, and that he has sent on for instruc
tions from Washington and Baltimore.
That he has forwarded two batteries, arms,
ammunition, &c.; that our militia, if cal
led out, had better be pat under experi
enced officers; that Col. Roberta ha, start- '
ed for this city, and that another colonel
of repute will immediately follow him.
Gen. Russel is ill and cannot come. The
Governor closes by saying that he will be
out himself if the news still continues
alarming, and that plenty of troops will
be immediately forwarded.
!fore Bridge Burning.
By a telegraphic dispatch which Captain
Batchelor received yesterday afternoon,
from the Collector at Wheeling, it appears
that the rebels were then engaged at their
favorite pas'ime of burning bridges on the
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at Warring.
ton. It is not known whether this is the
same force that occupied Morgantown on
Monday or not.
Pickpocket Arrested.
A professional pickpocket named David
Noble.of Cleveland, was arrested yesterday
afternoon, at the Pennsylvania railroad
passenger platform by officer Foz. He
was caught in the act and several hundred
dollars found on his person. He was com
mitted for trial. He is well known to the
police of Cleveland.

which was done last season.

in killing JEW. A. Obey, a conductor on

Flax Sheeting.
We are glad to see that Messrs. Kenne

ry for the manufacturing of flax sheeting.
The successful manufacture of this article
will be worth many victories, adding large
ly, to the best of Pittsburgh articles, and
giving a 'good and cheap article to all, in
stead of being dependant on cotton sheet
ing. We do hope that all our farmers will .
plant flaxseed, and every one feel patriotic
enough to aid in this importadt projsct.

Our musical public will be pleased to

artistes, will give us grand operas next
week. His company consists of Madames
Lorini ' Cordier and Morensi, prima don

Amodio and Dubrel, baritones; Sasim
and Barilo, bassos, and a full chorus and
orchestra, under the direction of Signor

above we predict crowded houses for Mr.
Gran daring his stay in this city, especially
as his repertoire consists of the followitig
operas: Trovatore, Norma, Dinorah,
Ballo in Maschera, La Juive, Martha, &c.
Marie Zoe.
This celebrated daneens is drawing
crowded houses at Trimble's Varieties.
