A Hint to Admiral. Dupont.
If the President is to be held responsi
ble for the employment of proper agents
to carry out his measures for the suppres
sion of the rebellion, a heavy weight of,
censure must on him for having ant'
fared Admiral Dupont to plan the recent'
operations against Charleston, when, in a
quiet offi - ce in the city of New York, sat a
man well known to have suggested the
most important campaign and the most
important measare of State policy of the
Administration, and who must have been
well known to the President as equally
competent to directhim in every other
enterprise which he might have in con
templation. We are, therefore, at a loss
to conjecture ' why the eminent genius,
who in 1861 forced on the campaign to
Richmond via Ball Ran, and in 1,u2 de
vised the means of instantaneously de
priving the rebels of three millions of their
subjects, should not have been called into
council when in 1863 the Administration?
was projceting a. naval enterprise which
had engaged more than any other of the
war the attention of the people. lied
this been done he could, in three minutes,
havesketched a plan by which (we have
his word tor it) Charleston would have
been readily taken ; thus saving Admiral
Dupont weeks of anxious study and draw
ing songs 'of thanksgiving from the hearts
of the twenty millions who are accustomed
to utter prayers through him. To this
tiniversal genius no science and no art is
sunknown. All the resources of seaman
hip, no less than these of military strategy
are at his fingers' ends ; and to such, per
fection has he brought his diagnosis that,
like the worthy Dr. Hornbook, i minortaliz

Adventure in Rebeldom How
Reid Sanders - Lost His Mail and
. His 'Liberty.
In May, LSO, Arnold Harris visited
Buffalo. It was the day of the departure
of the Twenty-eighth Regiment for the
seat of war, and, recognizing a number of
his friends in the ranks, he enlisted, and
marched by their side. Soon after his ar
rival at the - Army of the Potomac, he was
transferred to the naval service and placed
in command of the Island Belle, of the
Potomac flotilla. A few months later he
lost his vessel and applied for another
command.
The Department proposed to send him
to Richmond, to frustrate, if possible, the
projects of George N. Sanders, who had
just then secured contracts from the rebel
Government for a navy to be built is Eng
land. He accepted the perilous mission,
and soon made his way to the Coat tdere.te
capitol. Without any disguise of name or
person, he succeeded in acquiring the con
fidence of the rebel authorities, and es
tablished himself on intimate ternis with
several of the most important officials.
His situation, however, was dangerous
in the extreme, and he was arrested and
confined in Castle Thunder for seventeen
days. He was recognized by two Ms
lenders as the former commander of the
Island Belle. Upon his trial he acknowl
edged his identification, claiming to have
done the Confederacy more service while 1 1
holding a command in the Federal Navy
than he could have done by openly joining,'
its cause at an earlier day. His audacity ,
triumphed, and he not only obtained an
acquittal, but continued to enjoy the con
fidence of the rebel authorities, or, rather, I
of all but Benjamin, who was suspicious of
him throughout.
Soon after his discharge from Castle
Thunder he became a participant of the
enterprises of Sanders, who had recently
returned from Europe. As soon as San
ders had perfected his arrangements with
Jeff & Co., he was to return to England
with money and documents necessary to
the carrying out of his schemes. His son,
Reid Sanders, and Harris were to accompa
ny him. The aim of the latter was to se
cure Sanders' mail. He succeeded in hav
ing it arranged that. George, with his
friends, should proceed by way of Ma
tamoras to Halifax, while Reid Sanders
and he, with the documents and dispatches
to be taken; were to run the blockade at
Charleston, and to got to Halifax by way
of Nassau. In accordance with this plan,
Sanders junior, and Harris proceeded to
Charleston and purchased a yacht, ;which
they loaded with turpentine and started
gaily out, in darnary last, to slip through
the blockading fleet and make for Nassau.
Great interest was taken in the enterprise,
and before leaving the voyagers were en
tertained at a dinner party with Beaure
guard and the leading celebrities of the
city.
Meantime, Harris had succeeded in
communicating with one of the vessels of
the ontsidefieet, and putting its comman
der upon the watch. The yacht, as she
ran out of the harbor, was speedily detect.
ed, and subjected to a cannonade which
frightened Sanders out of his wits and
made him eager to surrender. The mail
bag, heavily freighted with iron, was thrown
overboard, but Harris had previously ab•
.atractedAmitaitUntiFe
- vtie-rnip
substituting in its stead his own, which
happened, as a remarkable coincidence, of
course, to be its exact counteapart.
The capture of Reid Sanders will be re
membered. Harris is at present in Buf
falo on a visit to his friends. He ranks
as a Lieutenant in the Navy.

Gold Model orthe Roanoke.
Mr. J. 13. Benton, of Wilmington.
Delaware, has just completed a gold model
of the United States iron-clad frigate
Roanoke, which, for beauty of workman
ship and similarity of model, outstrips
anything of the kind hitherto made. The
model is eighteen inches in length, three
and three-eighth inches in width, and a
trifle over two inches id depth. There are
nineteen inches of eighteen carat gold used
in the construction. All the details of
turrets, hatches, guns, smoke-stacks, man
ropes, d:c., are made to scale, and are per
fect in form. A musical instrument is lo
cated above the spar deck, and when set
in motion the three turrets revolvd and
the-:propeller is worked, and when placed
in the water goes ahead in. Azle style. The
musical arrangement plays three , tunes—
" Star Spangled Banner," • "My Mountain
Home," and "My old Kentucky Home,"
The gold used cost over $1,. - ,00. Some
of Captain Ericsson's friends have en
gaged Mr. Benton to build a gold Moni
tor battery, the gold in it to be worth $5.
000.
"OnEau's C. KEaa's" burlesque de
