Traitors Among Us.
[From the New York Journal of Commerml -
, It becomes a somewhat - curious ques
tion whether the conservative majority of
the - people in this country are authorized
accepting the belief that the principles
9f . the radical party are con ectly repre
,aented by the newspapers and public
weaken( who profess. to enunciate their
doctrines. For, if these exponents' of
political doctrine and practice are indeed
correct exemplars of the party they speak
.tor, then indeed that is not only the most
corrupt, but the most treasonable and
dangerous party ever organized in this or
anT.conntry.
The' expression is strong, but the truth
requires strong expressions. No form of
ihostilities to country, Constitution, law or
liberty can be named which these Men and
- newspapers do not counsel and urge on
their deluded folldwers. And this they
doin language designed to inflame to vio
lence, and sometimes in phrases that
would disgrace the purlieus of vice and
shame.
The underlying principle on which they
are now conducting their campaign is
this : That it is treason to oppose them,
their plans of wholesale robbery and
fraud, their debasement of the country to
the vilest purposes of plunder.- They de
clare that any one who finds fault with the
manner in which public affairs are con
ducted is a traitor. They propose, in mo
ments of passion, to inaugurate mob law,
and proceed at once to hang all the loyal
men who dare think that "supporting the
government" is- not synonomous with
plunging the hand deep into the Treasury,
and filling the pockets of contractors and
newspaper editors with gold, coined from
the peoplea'brooti. The leading newspa
per officaa in the interest of the radical
party are notoriously involved in govern
ment gun contracts, navy agencies, and
other methods of '"supporting the gbv
erument," and the streets ring with his
tories of transactions in which leading rad
ical politicians are involved, in which they
have grossly defrauded the zovernment:
and yet-these iery man have the audacity
to pretend to be members -of "Union
leagues,' t loyal men, patriotic citizerts, and
propose to seise and hang their fellow
citizens who believe they are in "league"
with' the Southern rebellion and that
they are hourly aiding into the beat of their
ability.
Is our national character gone? Wi!l
New Hampshire, will Connecticut, by
their votes, approve of the rule of a party
which is not only concerned in these vast
frauds, these infamous robberies, but a
party whose principles declare that they
will punish the man who finds fault with,
management?their
A is - a prominent plan of retate-itne'"
sonal y, with all the bitterness of radical
malice. The temptation is almost irre
sistible to retort by taking the lists of rad
ical men and publishing against them name
after name, the frauds and robberies
which are known to be chargeable against
them. Why, these men are rolling in
wealth extorted from the purse of the na
tion. They are riding in carriages built
from the very sweat of our boys toiling
and perishing in the Rappahnnock and
Mississippi mud. They deck their wives
with diamonds that spring from the tears
of widows and orphans, rubies that are
red with the blood of our young and brave.
The music and dancing in their palaces
are fearfully suggestive of the moans of
the dying, the march to the grave on the
storm-beaten banks of some river—the
agony that-they, no less than the rebel
armies, have caused, and out of which
they have made their wealth,
We could tell histories that ought to
blanch the cheeks of some New York
radical politicians, and send them shiver
ing-into dark places to hide their shame?
Is it treason to tell them ? Mast a man
approve of the conduct of Butler in New
Orleans, of McNeil i n Missouri? Must
he rejoice in the hideocs barbarism of ne
gro insurrections with the New York Tri
bums • gun contractors, or recommend
hanging loyal citizens who are, for some
other reason, obnoxious to the &ening
Peg Navy agents ?
Old Ironsides Rebels.
. The Navy Department has _tut discov

the sturdiness of Old Ironsides—Commo-

The Non-Exemption of Ministers
from the Draft
The Episcopal Recorder, in an article
referring to the refusal of Congress to ex
empt ministers of the gospel from liabil
ity to draft, says :
Nor will there be any serious conse
quences from the refusal to grant this ex
emption. Wherever a ."minister" of the
gospel is ugefulftO'hili people, and preach
is faithfully to them of Christ, they will
ladly contribute for his 'lief the three
hundred dollars the law;rpresoribes for
Commutation. Should they not be ready
to do this, or should thedrafte& - minister
be without church connection which will
pay this amount for his discharge, we can
not see that he has sany public claims to
be excused from that service, which, dit
tasteful as it may be, 'every loyal citizen
is now tolled upon to render.
