PITTSBURGH, March 23.
Ma. Enrron—l wish you would call the
attention of the Street Commissioner to the
condition of Pennsylvania avenue. It is at
present in a filthy condition, and has been
so for a long time back. The pavements
are plastered with about six inches of
mud. It is a shame that the Commission
er having charge of this part of the city
will allow the streets to remain in this
condition. Yours, &c.,
A 'CITIZEN,
There are other localities in the same
district which ought to cleaned, and would
if the Commissioner discharged his duty
properly. We hope he will soon take a
round and have every street cleaned that
requires it.
Soldiers' Bounty Money.
The Second Auditor of the Treasury is
in the daily receipt of a large number of
applications for bounty money under the
act passed at the last session of Congress,
providing that wounded soldiers discharg
ed before the expiration of their term of
enlistment, in consequence of disability,
shall be entitled to the same bounty as if
they bad continued in the army until the
end of the time for which they were en
listed. A great many discharged for
other causes suppose that the provisions
of the act apply to all who are honorably
discharged, which is not the case, it being
intended specially for those wounded and
disabled while in the discharge of their
duties. As Congress omitted to make
the necessary appropriation to carry the
act into effect, even those to whom it was
intended to apply cannot be paid until
such an appropriation is made.
The. Commandant at Harpers'
Ferry.
The following paragraph, written by a
correspondent of the Baltimore American,
at Harper's Ferry, has been copied into
several papers: 'Brigadier General Biddle
Roberts, of the Pennsylvania Reserves,
(formerly a Colonel of that division), hav
ing been assigned to command at this point,
arrived on Friday, and relieve'd Brigadier
General Kelly, who has been in command
here for several months. General Kelly, •
I understand, goes to Martinsburg to as
sume command of his division. General
Roberts comes among us with the reputa
tion of being an accomplished gentleman,
as well as an excellent soldier, and as one
who has known the;General, I can cordial
ally endorse this good opinion of him, and
hope that he may always possess the good
will of the men under his command, as he
does at the present time."
We regret to state that, however well
entitled Col. Biddle Roberts may be to the
encomiums of this writer, he is not
the person appointed to the command in
question. The officer assigned to it is
Col. Roberts formerly aid to Gen. Pope.

LATE FROM NEW .ORLEANS,
Rebel Force Captured near Port Hudson
Treaties with the Indians
From 13 an Francisco
Louranus, March 23.—The city has
been filled witn . rumors of rebel advances
all day.
All that headquarters are advised of is
that the rebels in numbers varying from
five to ten thousand are in the vicinity of
Somerset, and more are coming.
Military circles estimate the number
there at less than two thousand notwith
standing those advices.
The report of a battle progressing near
Murfreesboro on Saturday was entirely
false.
Skirmishing took place along the lin3s
yesterday, with no important results.
.NEW YORE, March 23.—The steamer
City of Manchester arrived at this port
this evening. Her advices have been an
ticipated.
The New Orleans correspondence of the
World states that on the 9th inst. a small
rebel force was captured six miles below
Port Hudson, together with the signal
book of the rebel army.
Gen. Sherman is in command at New
Orlears during the absence of General
Banks.
.Large numbers of vagrant negroes have
been arrested in New Orleans.
A private dispatch received here states
that Commodore Farragut passed the Port
Hudson batteries.on the night of the 14th
inst. with his fleet.
Col. Clark, chief of Gen. Banks' staff
was wounded on the 14th, but not serf•
onely.
No fight of consequence has yet taken
place.
Gen. Banks is i❑ good spirits and with
n five miles of Port Hudson.
The wounding of Col. Clarke makes ii
.retty evident that thero had been some
.eavy skirmishing.

he had received information from Lieut.

gives us control of the heart of the Mis
sissippi.
The vessels all got through in a lighting
condition excepting the Petrel which lost
her wheel entirely.
This movement of the fleet has evident
ly alarmed the'rebels, as they are energet
ically at work preparing themselves against
all contingencies.
There is much distress in Vicksburg.
The occupants have no meat but are living
entirely on corn meal.
The Secretary of Interior, Usher, has

THE NEW STEAMER MAJESTIC.
Capt. John P. Keiser's dew steamer has attrac
ted a good deal of attention during the past
week, and has been visited by a large number of
persons, all of whom have come to the conclusion'
that she is decidedly one of the largest and best
steamers ever constructed. The hull was built by
Messrs. E. & N. Porter & Co., Shoustown. Length
255 feet; beam 41 feet; and hold/ feet. The cabin
was built by Messrs. W. Richardson & Co. is neat,
handsome and admirably arranged in every de
partment. The boilers, four andumber, with four
due 4 40 inches in diameter 30 teet long, were
built' by Messrs. Watson & Monroe, are very com
plete, and calculated to add credit to this estab
lishment. Mr. Watson being a practical mechan
ic and an old river engineer, knows how things
should be got up so as to give owners and officers
as little expense as possible.
The Majestic is a side wheeler. Her wheels are
32 feet in diameter, with 12 feet buckets. She is
supplied with all modern improvements that 'in
genuity could suggest, or money purchase. We
have no hesitation in say.ng that no boat ever
built on the western Waters excel her in com
pleteness, and it is doubtful if she has anyeenals.
She has Lea's Patent Elivator for loading and un
loading, and an extra boiler for the same. The
painting was executed by Marra*, Long gs' Duff;
Furniture
The outfit was furnished by & Duff;
Furniture by T. B. Young & Co.
The Majestic only draws 32 inches light, and is
intended fora St. Louis and New Orleans pack
fit, bat at present she will rim in the service of
Uncle Sam," at the lt under solicitations of "Uncle Abra
ham." She was built the superintendence
of Captain W B lia.slett. The Captain has built
many fine boats and never built one that was not
successful, but the present one far eclipses any of
his former efforts. If the Captain was not so
modest, he might justly feel proud of the noble.
