sonian case, has attracted. The depth_
and feeling of the comments of the con--'
servative press upon ,his address to, the
jury show very clearly that danger is up
prehended even from the highest judicial
authority in the State. When ell else is:
changing cir in a state of chaos: when
usurpations are submitted to, because 01
the fear of imprisonment; when Congress
is about passing laws depriving the Stop
of their authority, and reposing indefi
nite power in - the hands of the President

it is no wonder that a calm, dignified and
oonvmcing charge, inculcating the neces
sity of protecting the humblest citizen

No wonder; it requires men of braid; spc
courage and virtue to pronounce such dis-
courses, and in these times such men-are
rare indeed. We rejoice that we have such
a Judge in Pennsylvania as our Chief
Justice. His manly and-dignified sild'un •
answerable argument against arbitrary ail
rests places him among the few,Ahe very
few Judges in the Union having' the conr
age to defend even obscurity , against the
lawlessness of power.
After reviewing the late trial of, will . *

terrors of social proscription with which
they.„ate threatened by the league of
`silver fork loyalists,' and contentedly,
contrast their position, as successful ad
vocates in a fair contest for pritterple,W,
fore a court of justice,. with that or the
obsequious and knee-benking Canaanite&
who seek to disparage them—thia profes •
sional motes that love to flutter izt,any
'sunshine, however fleeting and equivocal..
After the chief justice had, 'olied

worse things to come, lost all heart. , Era
grqwled a growl the next day, but it
'a very little one.' Juries who dare‘:to
protect rights may also venture to redress
wrongs. Indictments for libel, 4oqming

present week. Gov. Andrew, of Massa

not selected to fill a more resposible posi-

the Charleston Mercury, died in that city
on the 8d inst. He was formerly a mem;
her of the United States Congress from

The news from Roanoke' Island states
that the rebels have one hundred and
twenty-five small boats secreted in the
