Distressing Casualty.
We -regret to leant that Mr: Alfred
Slack, one of our Representatives in the
Assembly, has been so suddenly called
upon to mourn the death of an interesting
son, ten or twelve years old, who met with
a fatal accident at Harrisburg on Friday
rooming. The lad was leaning over
the balustrade in an upper story of
the Jones House, where his father boards,
when he lost his balance and fell to the
second story, it distance of some thirty
feet, causing severe concussion of the
brain. .Medical aid was at once on hand,
and every possible attention given to the
sufferer, but'after laying several houis in
an, unconscious state, he died. The af
flicted parents have the sympathy of the
community in their bereavement.
Discharged on his own Recogni-
Joseph Taylor, accused of bigamy, was
again brought before the Judges of the
Criminal Court on Saturday morning, and
kiti discharge asked for. ' It appears that
his mother-in-law, who made the informa
tion against him, is now satisfied that she
may have been mistaken in his having
been previously married, and did not de•
sire to have him longer remain in jail—
mom particularly since his health is bad,
and he has ',lately been subject to fits. Ta
king all circumstances into consideration,
the Court ordered Taylor to be discharged
on his own recognizance. I

On the 33 inst., a fishing smack con
taining three Jews and a large quantity of
medicine for the rebels, was seized on
the Lake, bound to Pochatonta. Letters
were also found from forty-or fifty leading
citizens of New Orleans to • members of
the Confederate . Government. The Jews
were tried before Judge Peabody on the
4th inst; but the sentence _was withheld
until the parties who wrote the letters had
been arrested as ordered by General
Banks
The weather was very cold, It was
generally thought that General Butler
would return to that city if he was not
made Secretary of War.
Rev. Drs. Seacock, Fulton and Good
rich, had reached New Orleans; but as
they refused to take the oath of allegiance,
Gen. Banks would not allow them to land.
The water flows through Williams' out,
in fi out of Vicksburg, and a small stream
had passed through the canal if it deepens
and widens, our fleets can pass down lest ,

intelligence frightened the rebels consid.
erably.
There is nothing new from Texas.
Wastustorea, Feb. 14.—1 n the House
yeaterday,the following incident occurred:
Mr, ?Sorehead of Pennsylvania, rising to
raquestion of privilege.te read the follow
ing trom a speech 'not delivered, but
which Mr. Riddle. of Ohio. obtained leave
to permit in favor of the Illinois and
New York canal bill. "It was to be es
w. .
nested that Pennsylvania wo uld oppose it
solid, rd though she too rests upon the Lake.
Nothing can.traverite.her boil from which
lithe do/s not exact *a trilinte, and her chi
zeds for a whole winterNith arms in their
hands,, recently forced the whole travel
ing North to . patronize her peanut
veimleris at Erie The ',place where
"Ferry's fleet was built. The na
tion has clearly shaped its policy
to develope her resources; her coal end j
iron are exempt even from taxation, and
yet her representatives stand, here the.
goblins of the mines, a stupid inert means
tif selfish obstinacy to wall up the way of
this great treasure. .We sty to Pennsyl
vania "We bide our time."
Mr. Moorehead denounced this as an
atrocious libel on a great state and an un
worthy 'and unprofitable imputation upon
the members of the House. It was falsely
stated. .Havre sh ed the.dusult and pr
'flounced hi MAUI; a libellor. The coal
and iron of Penrisylvitiiiti' were not ex.-
ernptedifrom thelax. • - -
Mr. Riddle maned that he might possi
bly be mistaken about the provisions of
the :tax law, and yet it *ould be found
that what he said was substantially correct.
So far as the remAinder. of The statement
was concerned lia'held-hinnelf reopened-

call him to account. The citizens of Erie
?for an entire winter mere in arms tearing
up the railroad, and the State of Pennsyl
vania stood by permitting it to be done. I
The policy of the nation ie so formed as to
develoPe the wealth of Pennsylvania.
Was it for this that he was to be de
nounced a libeller , and because Pennsyl
vania in 'a solid 'body oppose the interests
of the West? • .
M. Moorhead replied: It , wag for sta
ting a falsehood.
Mr. Riddle-staid be could have but one
answer. There were rile& of the House
governing debate, but he thouilr the gen
tleman understood him (Riddle). too well
to believe he would shelter himself under
him. -He had obtained permission to
Print his speech often imjuinng in vain to
be heard in behalf of his constituente.—
The rule suppresses the right of petition ;
he had merely spoken as citizens had a
right to speak representing the interests of
the West. He put himself behind no
rules. Moorhead desired to reply but the
House agreed to the pending motion to
consider the Indian appropriation bill.
From information received from the
Army of the Potomac it appears that the
rebels are throwing up breastworks and
rifle pits north of Fredericksburg. It
most not be inferred from the absence of
interesting news from the Rappahannock
that the army is in a condition of idleness.
The abolition of the Grand Division has
