the President of the Institution and the
rector of the pariah ,came into the room.
They.were both men of authority,, men of
sense; and fathers of charming dauehters,
and they turned the kale. till the right side
6 in less than no time.' The question relat
ing to the admission of novels was post
poned, and the question of dancing or no
dancing was put to vote on tue spot. The
President, the Rector and myself, the
thfree handsomest and highest bred gen
tmn in the assemblyv led the way on the
lil eral side, waggishly darning all gallant
ii , , tlemen present to —beware of disap
pointingthe. young Ihdies. This decided
thiamaverers, and the wavers decided the
minority. My first. business, as Seretary,
was the drawing Out , of a model card of
admission to the ball. 'My next occupa
tion was to Idok at the rooms provided for
me. The , Duskydayle Institution occu•
piid a badly-repaired , ten-roomed house,
with a great flimsy saloon built at one side
of tit, smelling of paint and damp plaster,
and called the Lecture Theatre. It was the
' chilliest, ugliest, emptiest, gloomiest place
I ever entered in my life ; the idea of do
ing anything hut sitting dowli and crying
in it seetnedtto me - quite preposterous; but
the committee took a different view of the
matter, and praised the Lecture Theatre
as Is perfect ball room. The Secretary's
apartments were two garrets, asserting
themselves in the most barefaced manner,
without an attempt at disguise. If I had
intended to do more than earn my first
quarter's salary, I should have complain
ed: But as Iliad-not the slighest Inten
tion of remaining at Duskydale, I could
afford to establish e reputation for ami
ability by saying nothing. "Have you
seen Mr. Softly, the new Secretary? A
most distinguished person, and quite an
acquisition to our neighborhood." Snob
was the popular opinion of me among the
yming ladies and the liberal inhabitants.
"Have you seems Mr. Softly,'the new Sec
retary? A worldly, vain-glorious young
man. The last person in England to pro
mote the interests of our new institution."
Such was the counter-estimate 61 me
among the Puritan population. I report
both opinionsquite disinterestedly. There
is generally something to basaid on either
side of every question • and, as for me,
I can always holiThip the Beale impartial
ly, even when my own character is the
substance weighing in them. Readers o
ancient history need not he reminded, al
this time of day, that there may be Rom
an •virtue even in willogue.
