Although La Ilochefoucauld maintains
that „"true eloquence consists in saying all
that is necessary," I beg to dispute the
point.with•hitn, on: the • well-known print
ctple that ;'-circumstances alter cases,"
and "there is no rule without an excel).
tion."
The idea that nothing hut a learned
man can make an orator is among the
exploded fallacies. The speech of Logan
the Mingo, is held np as a pattern o
true eloquence, because it contains a
volume of pathos condensed in a few
lines.
It would doubtless have met the appro'
bation of the French author, but I appeal
;to:Ole Leader'for his opinion as to the er
.fect of such a condensed effort by a poIIV

,Itinerating, oratorical medicine vendors
have '-eititite id England, 'and probably
other countries in England, from "time
whereof the memory, of man ranneth not
to the contrary," but here they are com
paratively a new institutien. I remember
the first one who made his appearance in '
-
A head not stored With learning, but filled.
with the shrewd ideas of human nature
and its frailties, was surmounted by
conical shapedhaty. something like .I.haV
worn by theatrical brigands.
Ile WM elOqiientafter a minuet' of his'
own—pathetic and fanny by tarns—but
hissoquence proved a hit.
.Aliodichatt-trogregyza74litifiticured
everything, from scald-head to corns on
the feet, went off, as the vulgar phrase hai
it, "like hot cakes." As the money came
in fairly; he was not long without imita
tors.
It may be contended that the Razor Strop
Man was the great original of the princi.
ple. It was not altogether likely that he
was the first to introduce the style from
England, of which country he was a ma
tire, but the, peakedhataian was the first
to feel the public pulse on ailments, and
offer his remedy in song and story from
the top of a dry-goods box.
He wad the founder of an order now
more numerous than the montebaoks of
old, who relied upon teats of agility and
strength to procure them subsistence.
The itinterating medicine vendor is, gen
erally speaking, a Yankee; but, unlike
the Razor Strop Man, or the early imita
tors of the peaked hat man, be combines
education with" natural endowments, can
Bing a song, sometimes play upon a musi
cal instrument, and quote from Shak
spearis, if not from the classics.
Thus. I remember seeing two of them
l one evening, mounted upon a rostrum in
the market hoase of an interior town,
each of whom had a violin, on:which they
performed until they drawn an immense
Crowd. They sung comic songs until the
audience fairly screamed with laughter,
and I looked every moment for some one
to pass rotindLtite hat—but instead of this,
the one commenced holding forth on the
merits of Professor De Timolion's Unri
valled Soap while the other dealt it out
at the small consideration of twenty five
cents a cake—"merely to pay expenses."
The vendor of nostrums depends en
tirely upon the the power of his tongue.
Although be claims for his medicine the
positive power of miring certain ills, he
as well aware of the fact that one-half of
ibis audience knows he is lying—neverthe
leucite% satisfied that if he can amuse and
entertain, the men kill buy his medicine,
eves if they should pitch it into the gut
:terinstead of taking it home.
Signor Blitz waspnee taken aback on a
steamboat by a countryman, evidently af
flicted with the ennui. whe offered hint a
dialer to humbug him for a half an hourr:
. This is exactly the principle upon which
the medicine vendors live and flourish—
people pay them to be humbugged.
I last snmiaer, - ;whetv Camp 4.liiitiu was
filled with nine months' volunteers, pre
paring to march to Dixie, and all was
life and bustle, one of these parapathetic
vendors made his appearance among the
soldiers. kite -latter,. freslv from home,

By, this time the crowd winhcather large
composed in the main of men wha had
arrived from the Juniata region the day
previous. No one present anspected him
of being a medicine vendor",
The prevailing opinion was that he was
some half crazy lunatia front the Asylum
near the camp, or a recruit who had snug
gled in a flask of whielt,y,. apcl,wea about, to the crowd. Cries . qf , "dr . ? up t "
"put him out,", "simmei... down, "wilt

er number shouted "go ITiii old fellow,"
"go on nose, etc., until order was reatct
red, when he continued: ....
The life of the aoldier iii ,ii hard one—
all on yeou will feind that out: Hard
lodgings, hard crackers, f and hard fare

But these hardships munt be endured ef
we want to save our kedntry, and ef it

Here he stooped down, opened his hand
trunk, and took therefrom. a . small galli-
pot and a vial, contaialngareddish colored
liquid.
. i I
ASSuming an erect poiltio' n, with one n
each hand, he again spoke;
"But yeou see, my friends, there air
men in the world who hey the welfare of
the soldier at heart, and ef Professor Gir
rard warn't one en 'ern,' I would tell you
so.
He is the inventor of ihe great intment,
warranted to cure cuts, bruises, burns,
scalds, wounds and coins, called Mc-
Clellan Military Intment. Also, the great
remedy for rheumatism, nuralger tenth
ache, etc., called the Balm of Gißead. I
- am the Professor's sole tigent for the camps
of Pennsylvania —her sold thousands of
bottles, and here's abeout a trunk fall of
certificates to prove theefficiciency of ,
beoth—fact, by ginger, The medicines
are worth their weight in gold, when the
latter article is not at too high a figure,
but I sell it cheap—it is under general in
structions from the Ppfessor that I do so
—twenty-five cents a box for the intment,
and a quarter of a dollar for the Balm.—
Buy one of each and change a bill—
take five for a dollarend change yeou
a five dollar bill."
The Yankee knew the scarcity of change
in camp, and he had fortified himself ac
cordingly by purchasing silver, then held
at about ten per cent., and procuring one
and two dollar bills, which could readily
be obtained'in the banks of Harrisburg
for larger notes.
'Look here," said one of the soldiers,
t'if your medicines are what you say they
are, past let me have three of the ointment
and two of the )3:417

The five articles were peeped. over, and 14

"Pennsylvania money, eh? Red back—
good as wheat, and who is the next custo
mer?' '
No person making an immediate reply,
he again opened:
"Laying upon damp greound produces
the rhumatism.
"I'll take three bottles of Balm and two
of Ointment," said another soldier, step
ping up to the vendor.
"Wall, I shouldn't wounder if a good
many more on ye would go and do likewise.
`Here yeou air."
The Balm and Ointment were passed
over, and another five •dollar bill on the
same bank tendered.
"Ohl the same subject, eh? Wall, I jes
declare if I W 45 in the salten deown line, 1
would jest as soon pickle this stuff as goold
itself "
The fourdollars change were /given where
upon the vendor thrnst the V into his vest
pocket, and exclaimed:
"Seold agin; and got the tint—and who
is the next customer "
"Bays ' remember Clovernment shoes air
made of hard leather, and welkin' in 'em
must bring ceorns upon the toes of those
not used to 'em."
"Let me have three Ointments and two
Balms," Raid another recruit, holding up
a bill of the same denomtnation and on
the•same bank."
"Seold again and got the tin!" said the
Yankee, as he fobbed the bill and gave the
four one's in change.
"Efany among yeou have got the tenth
ache or headache, I'll ceure yeou at once.
Nothing can be sirer."
At this juncture, t chap with a swollen
jaw mounted the box, when the Professor
,manipulated the swollen part with the
wonderful medicine, and strange to say, he
ideclared himself cured.
This was followed by a perfect rush and
,the Yankee took in four or five dollar bills
giving in every instance change. The idea
prevailed wiih the vendor that they wanted
;change and fortunately he was prepared.
fot them The notes were all on one bank
which denoted that he was dealing with
mesetvho all came from the same plce.
- lie now became exceedingly jolly, re
lated anecdotes, and sung a song in the
real Yankee twang, and succeeded in sell
ing three more on the same principle as
before, making ten in all, when, to his
dismay, he discovered that the trunk was
empty, and still the buyers manifested no
disposition to let up.
"By golly, gentlemen," said the elated
dealer, "I must gin in till after dinner,
jrhen Pll be on hand agin. I have five
gross on it left at the hotel, and I'll supply
yeon all, or best tryin' on . it on."
I In great glee he jumped into a hack and
Ordered the driver, as a special favor to

i The profits on the medicine were evi
dently enormous, and he was determined
tp improve the tide in his affairs. Ar
riving at the hotel, he lost no time in re-
Peeking his hand trunk with Balm and
Ointment, and then went on to the bank
and asked the cashier for forty dollars'
Worth of small notes for fives.
"Certainly," said the obliging man of
nioney, counting them down with the ht.
pidity usual to men of expenence.
IThe Yankee deposited his eight fives
upon the counter.
"What !" . said• the cashier, "Central
Hank of Pennsylvania .atHollidaysburg
Why, that bank exploded four years ago,
find never was of much account while it
was in existence If'
'"Du tell I" said the Yankee, gazing up
on the fives spread before him. "Du
tell 1" and great beads of prespiration
stood upon his brow. ~
A moment more, aid, 'grasping the bills,
he held them up, and exclaimed, "Sold
agin . and got the tin Then stuffing them
into his pantaloons pocket, with a laugh
which almost betokened approaching in
sanity, he rushed from the bank.
The impossibility of discovering among
four thousand mein, dressed alike, who it
was that imposed upon him, was apparent
to him, painfully so—and packing his
trunk, he took the first train to the East
and bid adieu to Harrisburg, probably
forever—at least he. has not been seen
either there or in Camp Curtin.
