Banks and staff withdrew. Gen. Butler
then addressed his staff, and requested
that each member should take pains to
enlighten and assist their successors, of
whom he spoke in high terms. He prate

his was a character of which the Ameri
can people might well be proud. Noth
ing could be more generous than the man
ner and terms in which General Butler
spoke of his successor.
