rooms; and all the offices around it were
silent and deserted as the grave. Thomp
son, thb transfer clerk, kept up a shadow
of the old high estate in a distant part of
the building, but in the Immediate business
hall atone Mr. Patterson, with the old
gray-headed porter, kept watch and ward
each day, playing the farce that the bank
still lived, on the spot where he had paid
out billions and trillions of money.
One day a stranger enters, evidently
from the West—the far West.
For a moment he is struck by the'tomb
like aspect and deathly silence of the place
but discovering some one at the distan
counter, advances.
The awakened echoes of his own steps
give the only sign of life.
Rustling a large pile of bank notes, ho
demanded— .
"Give me

"We can't."
vh 7 --w here'sTliereside n t ?'
flierit is no President."
t'Who are you ?"
"I'm the teller."
"Well, tell me where the Cashier is,
then."
"There is no Cashier."
"What!" and, hesitating a moment, he
burst into a loud, sharp cry of—" There is
no Cashier !"
From the vaulted ceiling echoed back in
distinct words; "There is no cash here!''
The stranger started, looked up to
whence the reply came, stared at the teller
and, gathering up his bills, departed with
out another word. Mr. Patterson 'also
started at the Delphic oracle, and, his
mind having for some time been uneasy
under Lis false position and the sad mem
ories it brought, determined to retire from
the banking hall whose fame was fled and
post notes fled, and all but him departed.' -
So little an incident decided him, and he
left the scene of his former useful and
brilliant career forever.
The remains of the bank were removed
to some back rooms in No. 79 Walnut
street; - and the building sold, after a time,
to the Government, rho now occupies it
as a Cnstom House. Upon the body of
the dead, monster there sat, for years after,
an inquest of ghouls, rich men, of high
standing and character, who did not hesi
tate to drape $8,500 a year for each other
out of theilittle left to so many widows,
orphanS and broken down merchants, and
continued to feast upon the crushed orange,
till every drop of Jule() was sucked dry,
when-they too, resigned, and the once glo
rious itinki of the United States became
like the baseless 'fabric of a dream.
The Separation Final.
From the Richmond We) Enquirer., Dee, 12,
Prosident Davis, in hie inaugural - at
Montgomery, truly expressed the univer
sal sentiment when he proclaimed, even
before the beginning of the war, that the
separation was final and eternal.
!Our people, despite their earlier division
as to the time for action, resolved as one
man upon separate political life. Wearied
with. unceasing contentions in the Federal
councils, and alarmed and aroused at the
determined.attempt to place the yoke upon
, I
them, when they finally sundered the bands
of union as it was with lull purpose that
it should be forever. The
_immense ma
jorities which ratified the acts of secession
told how earnest was the popular resolve.
In no spbech, in no letter; in no news
paper,
_have we ever seen an intimation
that under any conceivable circumstances
the Union cotild be cemented again. The
avowal of such :.a: sentiment would have
drawn upon any man an odium that would
tiava been crushing and universal. By
common consent he would have been class
ed among traitors.
Letnot our foes. delude themselves. Let
tirem place no confidence in the hope that
by.a_ "vigoro,a prosecution of the war,
bouPled with a constitutional administra
tion of the Federal government" (it such
.a thing were possible), they can, in the
least, 'demoralize' our people, But our
citizens utterly deny that the enemy can
prosecute. the war, either vigorously or
otherwise, "coupled with a constitutional
ischninittration of the Federal govern-
ment." . Such an idea isinstantly rejected
here as a fatal fallacy.
'I We_ utterly deny the ri , ),ht of the Feder
al government to make war upon us under
- the pretentious that we are States of the
Federal Union; and we denounce snob
inr: aautterly unconstitutional, wicked
iiiilnitrocions, and
" care nought for any
conciliatory" word the assailants of our
homes and liberties may bear us upon their
bayonets.
* * For "brutality and knavery"
we have indeed a separate wrath; but the
attempt at our subjugation; in which our
foes are engaged,in the grand crime against
us, and alone suffices to arouse our at
most and unamimous endeavors, and
there is no blnndishneiat that can under
mine our resolve.

Romantic Story of the Countess

The folio ivpig is told in a German pa

of Lady Siegen, When a young girl, she
was very pretty, though:of a poor, genteel
family. She yfias engaged to be married
to a lawyer's Clerk, and the wedding was

on certain day. Among the
guests invited was the employer of her

It so happened Oat she had a quarrel with;

who was to oflicl to at the ceremony.—
They were all indignant at the conduct of
the young man, dad the lawyer himself
commiserated the) cruel treatment of the

search, it was fetid that the bridegroom.

It was not many mouths, however, before
she married General Teinitz, a rich and
handsome officer in the Prussian service.
She lived with himwo years and again
became a widow—this time inheriting a '
princely estate. A year or two more pass

when she married the Count von Sie- I

verdict of a Jury of Boys.
When Dr. Nathaniel Prentice taught a
public school in Roxbury he was very
much a favorite ; but his patience at 4 '
would get very much exhausted by the in
fractions of the school rules by the schol
ars. On one occasion, in rather a wrathy
way, threatened to punish with six
blows of a heayY ferule the first boy deter+.
fed in whispering, and appointed some as
detectors. Shortly after one of the de
tectors shouted:—
"Master, John Zeiler is whispering."
John was called up and asked if it was
a= fact. (John, by the way, was a favorite
both with his teacher and school-mates.)
"Yes," answered John, "I was not
aware of what I was about; I was intent
on working out a sum, and requested the
tic who sat next to baud me e arithme
cthat contained the rule which I wished
to see."
Tha doctor regretted hasty treat,
but told John that he coul h d is
not suffer h him
to whisper and escape the punishment, and
continued :
"I wish I could avoid it, but cannot,
Without a forfeiture of my word. I will,"
he continued, "leave, it to say •whether or
not. I omit the punishment.'
John said he was agreed to thatlinditn !
mediately called out S., T. D and D.
P. .D The doctor told them to return a
verdict, which they soon did, (after con
sultation,) as follows:
"The master's word must be keptinvi
olate,--John must rerieive the threatened
six blows of the ferule; but it must be in
flicted on voluntary proxiesl—and we, the
arbitrators, will share the punishment by
receiving each of us two of the blows."
John,
who had listened to the verdict,
stepped up to the Doctor, and with out
stretched hand exclaimed:
"Master, here is my' hand i they shan't
be struck a blow; Ii will recetve the par(

ishment."
The Doctor, under. pretence . of wiping
his face, shielding his eyes , and telling the
boys to gd to their seats, said be would

never intlicted.—Hiddlesex Journal.
