The land of his community has be n given to one of the Indian mis siouari •s; his flock had been scattered by 1 the pr gress of civilization, and the do main as bestowed upon a French re ligious rder. He and_ a few others, who had co e from France, had been joined by Ger ens, Irish and several American convert ; and they had established a, col lege, w th the charter of a university for the fut re, while a female branch of the orderliftd a flourishing academy, a mile z away.(here was also an industrial school for boys, and another for girls. The lay brother h and sisters carried on the opera tions of agriculture, the workshops, the laundry baking and cooking for so large a community, with its three or four hand/ ed pupils, while priests, professors, and nuns carried on the work of education. The 1 Father nperior, with a little excusable vanity,' howed me the handsome church, whosegorgeous high altar, and fine or gan, an noble chime of bells, with the clock-4rk and machinery which filled the whole region with music at intervals, day and nifOlt, and had been sent them as presents from far-off, never-forgotten, gen erous France. Then ive walked over a little causeway, between.the two pretty lakes, and visited the islands, as they were called, but really a doubl peninsula, compoted of two hil locks, ach of several acres. In these solitary retreats were nurseries of the order. One was the novitiate of priests, the oth rof the lay.brothers, where they went th ougffithe studies and religious ex ercises hich'were to prepare them for the solemn ows 'whfch would forever separate them fom the world, and devote. their energie and' lives to the work of their order. I saw novices of both classes, some B iki n g in the groves with their books, ome kneeling in their curious lit tle chap Is, which were enriched with holy relics a d pions gifts. While we remained, the hour of recrea tion sodnded on the bell. Then study and dev.tion, and work everywhere were alike la' . aside, in these retreats, and the mm unity of priests and nuns, lay and lay-sisters, students and ap- whole c brother: s, enjoyed the hour of innocent, .etimes boisterous mirth. Our next visit was to the not far dis tant, but still seprate and selected domain of the et female community. We were received with a gracious dignity in the ele gant parlor. by the young Mother Supe rior an American lady of singular bEautr, who had found a sphere f r heritmergics itt the education of a hundred or more West ern American girls, the care of an industrial school, the extension of her order, the es tablishment of new branches, and the opening of new avenues of feminine ambi tion or devotion. When we had looked at the school rooms, gardens, nnd the romantic prospect from the river bluff, an excellent luncheon awaited us, and we returned to the mei -saline-department, the Mother Superior, kneeling to the Father Superior, as on our arrival, to kiss his hand and. reed e his blessing. During our, walk home, this priest, who seemed to enter with en. tire zeal into his religious functions, con versed like a thorough man of the world, on education, politics, and society. It was evident that be read the newspapers as well as breviary, and that he Lad a sharp eye to business, 'as well as to thg, propagation of the faith. I dined in the great salle a manger of the university. The Father Superior by whom I sat, and the professors, dined at a central table; the students of varioni classes at others. The fare was plain and substantial. There was perfect-order. si• lence. At a signal, the Father—Superior said a short grade, and the eating began. while one of the boys commenced in a loud monontonods voice, to read from Abbe Hue's interesting journey in China, but he had not proceeded far before a touch of the Superior's bell suddenly si lenced his tongue, and at the same time let loose a hunered. With knives and forks, and chatter and clatter, it was a perfect Babel. The suspension of the rules was in honor of their guest, and a lesson in hospitality. As the fun was growing fast and furious, another touch on tho bell reduced the room to a sudden silence; there was a brief thanksgiving, and the well-ordered boys, rough as many were in appearance, filed out of the room, and we soon heard • their glad hurrahs in the play-grounds, while the Superior and sev eral priestly lay professors gathered under a shady piazza, to enjoy the leisurS after dinner hour. At the twilight hour, after a glorious sunset, such as the traveler sees upon the borders of the great lakes of America oftener than in any region I have visited, the church bell ang, and the whole com munity assembled for that most :pictur esque of Catholic devotions, the "Benedic- tion of the Blessed Sacrament." The high altar was coveaed with lights and flowers. The beautiful hymns of this service! were sung by a choir of boys be longing to the college. Protestants and Catholics sung in harmony and the best voice was the tine tenor of a handsome Israelit . • TO OUR ADVERTISING PATRONS The undersigned publishers of the city daily press have been compelled, by the depreciation of the currency. the operation of the new tax bill. and the greatly increased cost of everything used in the pr . nting art, to take council together, so as to protect themselves from loss, at the smallest ex pense to their patrons. No eta sof producers in the community will feel the effects of the sevonue taxes so severely and so directly as publishers.— Congress seems to have specially marked them out for the imposition of an unusual number of taxes Had their share been limited tot he three per cent. impost on their gross r avenue arising from adver tisements, they could have cheerfully paid it, and fe't they were doing their fall share towards equalizing the pecuniary burdenof the war• but, in addition to this. and to those which publishers meet as individua's, they have to pay, also, a tax on paper, on ink, on telegraphic despatches, &e • , &e But even this is not all. Owing to the prevalent practice of each manufacturer, or producer of tax able articles, making himrelfsimply the agent for collecting the Government tax from the consumer, the impost laid upon every article employed In making up a journal is thrown upon the publish er. and thus he has no -r to pay a largely increas ed price for his ink, his type, his coal, and, more especially. hie paper, which is the twain item (V his expert,. Nay, on account of the scarcity of cot ton rags, paper, has gone up, and is still going up. far beyond what the tax alone would have caused. while labor, owing to the enhanced price of every necessary, has advanced in nearly the sante rapid proportion, We thus find that the augmented cost of publishing a paper just now is nearly forty per cent, more than what it was a few weeks since. In the face of this alarming exhibit, we find a dintiniehed revenue, the chief source of which rev enue to ajt urnalizt is cub:erasing. The price of subscription in this country Is unreasonably fixed so near the cost of the white paper, ink and print ing. as to leave the slenderest margin for Profit.— The larger circulations thus see nred by the cheap ness of the paper is depended noon to increase the price and the number of advertisements which are the life-blood of a hewspaper. But, un fortunately. advertising is .the most smisitlve branch of human enterprise. It expands during days of ttrift and prosperity, and contrabta to the smallest compass during periods of doubt and business or monetary revolutlond. i Since thewar commenced. advertising has fallen off with us, as with journalists generally thiough- Out the•' country, from thirty to flay; per cent., and we now find ourselves with a flourish ing circulations, it is true, but ins7hout the revenue whiohls invariably based on such wide dissemi nations, What are we to do? The nubile demand for news; in these excited times, must be supplled.— It is manifest that when a paper is sold even the minutest fraction below its cost, the tamer its cir culation the greater the lose it entails. If adver tising were brisk, and at good rates, that less might be covered, but the direct contrary is now the case, We wish to refrain as long as possible from laying a tax upon' knowledge by adding to the price of our papers, but we think that both on account of what has above been titiedAnd on account of our increased circulations. advertisers ought to muscat to a slight advance on the Yates of advertising. always' xceedingly low in our city. The undersigned hthe. therefore, after due se-, donjon, agreed upon. and will be obliged to live closely unto the following revised schedule of pri ces. to take effectas to all new contracts for adver tising, from and after this 10th day of November, 4462. It ill hoped thievery alight advance of rates will not only be considered necessary and reason able by our patrons. but will be sufficient to se cure us from loss, without having resort to the more obi actionable devices of raising the subscrip tion prices of our respective paper., or by greatly reducing the quantity of their reading matter. NEW ADVERTISING RATES. The following rates of advertising have been agreed upon by the Publishers of tne•Pittsburgh Daily Press. to take effect on and afterthelOth day of November.lB62, on all new oontrants FOB STANDING MATTER.
