WEDNESDAY MORNING, OUT. 29
Teeth Set on Edge. ;
All acid foods, drinks, medicates and
tooth washes and powders are very inju
rious to the teeth. If a tooth ie put in
cider, vinegar, lemon juice or iartaytic
acid, in a few hours the enameliwill be
completely destroyed, so that it cap be re
moved by the &nger nail, as if lit were
chalk. Most people have experienced
what is commonly called teeth !set on
edge. The explanation of it is, the acid
of the fruit that has been eaten ha's so far
softened ,the enamel of th 3 tooth that the
least pretimie is felt by the small nerves,
which pervade the thin membrane which
connects the enamel and the bony part of
the tooth. Such an effect cannot be_pro
duced without injuring the enamel. True.
it will become hard again, when the acid
has been removed by the fluids lof the
mouth, just as an egg softened in this way
becomes hard again by being putlin the
water. When the effect of sour fruit on
the teeth subsides they feel as well as ever,
but they are not as well. And the oftener
it is repeated the sooner the disastrous
consequences will be manifested.—Scien
tific American. •
THE theatre of Ephesus was recently
examined and measured. It must have
been the largest ever erected, Its diame
ter was six hundred and sixty feet-Lforty
feet morg than the major axis of the Col
iseum. Allowing fifteen inches for each
person, it would accommodate fifty-six
thousand and seven hundred spectators.
Drury Lane will only contain three thous
and two-hundred, and old Covent Garden
held two thousand eight hundred, . This
edifice was the scene of one of Appolloni
.. us miracles; it is memorable for the up
roar described in Acts xix, when the Epe
.9as 26 sittns accused Paul and the Christians, in
this very building. To this edifice the
1 ' 135 56 writer to the Corinthians alluded, ob
ons 66 ably, when he said: "If, after th man
-919 ner of men, I have fought with beasts at
33
Ephesus, what advantageth it me?"
