The case of United States vs. Jos. C.
indicted for opening a letter mailed
in 'lbis (the Meadville) post office, written
by S. N. Pettis, was not concluded yes

written •with the tmderstanding that it

dropped into the orrice, and examined the
contents; and further, that no suit was

Homicide Case.
Wisterday morning, in the Court of
Oyer.iund I ermines, the case of William
Lowiie, an old resident ofJefferson town
ship,:indicted for the murder of Thomas
Chaniborlain, was taken up, Judges
Sterrett, Mellon and Adams on the bench.
For the prosecution the case is being con
ducted by District Attorney Miller, John
H. Hampton and W. C. Moreland, Esqs.,
and for the defense by Thos. M. Marshall,
Robert Woods and John R. Large, Ems,
It was; late in the afternoon before a jury
was *paneled and the remainder of the
day was oecupied with the testimony for
the p6oseeution, which had not all been
heardiat the hrtipr of adjournment.
Thei; offence was committed on the Bth
of September last; when deceased, a

in Jefferson township, visited the distillery
of Mr:rLowrie in the same vicinity. Mr.
L. had repeatedly ordered Chamberlain

on thelday named, he again told him to

the pla,';e, but Chamberlain refused to go,

struck him on the head with it. The blow
produced a fracture of the skull, from the
Effects which Chamberlain died about

substande of the testimony so far adduced.

The ladies of ,onr Subsistence Commit
. tee are niakit g glad the hearts of many
poor soldiers suffering from the neglect of
paid of and making for our city a
name forlbenevolence which we can never
lose. On Saturday night, forty-eight men
of Gen. Cox's brigade, sent from the
WashingtOn hospitals, in a very destitute
condition; to join their regiments in West
ern Virginia, reached our city. They
were just convalescing, and many were
without shirts, stockings, &c., and all
..lastitule of ruder-clothing. The Subsist
ence Cordinitlpe, hearing of their condi
tion, warMedwfip Wilkins Hall for their
reception; kept them comfortable until
Monday morning, providing them with
good, substantial meals, while the ladies
were busy ,on Sunday afternoon in finish
ing undershirts for them. On Monday
they were';sent on their way, supplied with
drawers, socks. ‘shirts, do., and in much
better bodily condition than *hen they
arrived. The poor fellows were exceed
ingly grtOltil, and blessed the ladies for
their kindness. This noble committee
continually needs aid, and will receive
and acknoWledge contributions of money,
groceries 'and dry goods at all times.

Nuisance Case.
On Tuepday morning the jury in the
ease of Commonwealth vs. Messrs. Naylor
St Smith, indicted for nuisance in main
taining an oil refinery in Lawrenceville,
came into; Court, after being out nearly
twenty four hours, and stated that they
were unable to agree, and the Court, see
ing no possibility of their finding a ver
dict, discharged them. A second trial
will hardly be pressed in this case and
therefore the defendants are about as well
off as they would have been in case of
acquittal. iThe question involved is, how
ever, one in which the community islarge

We are sorry to dash -their new pledged

A speculator from the East was in the
vicinity of Silver Lake, and, attracted by
the ;poet beauty of the locality and its
surroundings, he conceived the idea of
purchtising the hotel and fitting it up for
a watering place. He carried his plan
into exieerition, purchased the hotel, and
inaugurated an extensive system of repairs
by whigh he became involved, and was
obliged to mortgage the premises. After
remaining in possession a couple of years,
and meeting with a limited amount of pa
tronage.; he saw no way to meet his liabili
ties. this dilemma, he corresponded
with a Brother-in-law in Boston, and laid
the casei before him. His relative was, by,
the way a shrewd Yankee, and he sug
gested the sea serpent dodge. An India
rubber snake was manufactured to order,
and painted to imitate the natural reptile,
and in dtie time it was forwarded to Baton
ish the "natives." The appearance of
this artificial monster had all the effect
desired; the hotel was noon densely crowd
ed ; hundreds and thousands of people
visited the place, and the shrewd landlord
reaped a golden harvent. After making
a snug fortune, and paying up all his lia
bilities, the lucky proprietor allowed the
excitement to wane, sold out the premises
and moved away, leaving his "snake" in
the garret{ to the tender mercies of the
new proprietor.
And.thus ended one of the greatest
humbugs of the last decade—as we are
told.
