Dix. .The followinkletter of General DIX, in Which he declines being a candidate in the coming election in the. State of New York, is as patriotic as is just: 'FORTRESS MONROE, Oct. 22,1862. My name, I see, is again Used in connection with a political office, 'with out my knowledgb or consent. I shall re-' main at my post, doing all I can to sustain the Government in putting down the- re bellion • and at moment when the exist ence of the nation is hanging by a thread I cannot leave my duties here to be drawn into any paity strife. Neither will I ever assent to any adjustment of the contest with the insurgent States which shall ac-. knowledge their shecess. The rebellion began in fraud, dishonor and violence, andlinust end in submission to the Constitution and the laws. The secession leaders lhave put the contest on grounds which would make 'success on their part indelible disgrace to us. In my Sphere of duty my intention is to carry on the wqr without either violence, to the constitution; or to the principles of justice and humanity, and to contend to the last to avert a triumph over all that is stable in government or honorable in po litical companionship. My whole course through life has prov ed my devotion to Democracy and conser vative principles. iNo assurance should be needed that thisfaith is unchanged. But at a moment like this, unless all parties will rally round the government in putting down this rebellion, having questions among ourselves td be settled when the national honor is vindicated and our exist enee as a nation ecured, there can be nothing for us in future but disaster and disgrace. Jona al, Dix. The True Nativity of "Stonewall" Jackson—He was Born in Clarks burg. CrAnxsisurui,lVA.., Oct. 17, 1832. I notice in your paper of lath inst., that you express a doubt as to the place where "Stonewall" (Thomas J.) Jackson was born. I suppose Ali' of little consequence where he was born, bu t the fact is, he was born in Clarksburi, Virginia. I knew him well in 1828, when he was a little boy some four or five yeirs of age. He is the 8012 of Jonathan Jackson, who died in this place about 1827. He 'had a brother, Thomas, now dead, and' a sister, Laura, now Mrs. Arnold,- of Beverly, Randolph county. His motheemarried - 1. B. Wood- i son about 1830 0r4831. I was at the wed ding. Upon the ftirmation of Fayette county, Captain Woodson was appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court of that county, and shortly after moving there ]to enter upon the duties Of his office , his wife died. ,By her he had one so , 'named Wirt, who now lives in one of the Western States. "Stonewall!' Jackson was taken in charge by some of hie relatives -in Lewis county,. when quite yonn7, and afterwards, through the influence of Samuel L. Hays, then' representative in Congress , of this district, he obtained situation in the military academy at West Point, where he received his education. L. H. [ The above is from an old citizen of Clarksburg, of undonbted veracity-41nd standing. We attach ientire credibility to his statement, and consider that it settles theuestion in controversy .— Ed.
