The Fire on Oil Creek.
_ We copy the' following account of the
late fire on Oil ('reek front the Oil City
Rewister :
It would apyear that on yesterday after
noon about three o'clock a tire broke out
on the Blood farm, at its intersection with
the 7 arr farm. Thu fire first broke out in
the tanks of Mr. if. lir'Filkins. 9s to
how the lire originated there is consider
able diversity of opinion. Without any
prejudicci, we merely think it must have
caught from some of the numerous engines
in ,the immediate vicinity of the Filkins
well.
. The space burnt. over embraces from
eighteen to twenty acres. /Most of this
was on the Rlood . farm, it what was called
Maple Grove. In this grove was the Mb
- I.in, Lloyd. and several other wells. Oil
has been stored this locality for the last
three months, and of course a large quan
tity was on hand. Were, as well as above,
the oil tanks were ":
-standing close together,
intermingled with! engine-houses, offices,
(k.e. On this territory w'ere stored Some
0,1)00 barrels of op, in tanks and barrels,
beside some ten Wells, seven of which
were flowing. AIE that human foresight,
and exertion eduldklo was done, but it was
all in vain. It is true that some houses.
and the refineries bf Messrs. Barrows
Scott and Battles Si Co., were saved, but
the remaining portion of the ground Was
burnt over.
Abollt.Six - o'clocl: the fire ceased raging,
for the simple reesim that there was little
or nothing left to Burn. The whole space
before occupied by tanks, wells, engine
houses, offices anq dwellings was swept
clean. Maple Grdive, which we have often
admired as one of the finest ornaments of
Oil Creek, is no more. The• charred and
blackened trees wil long remain a monu
ment of this sad dranster.
During the conflagration Oil Creek took
fire and presented s grand sight. By the
united exertions of the people assembled,
the lire was put outs From a hasty exam
ination, we should think the loss will not
fall far short 015109,000. Some 25,000 or
20,000 barrels of tnl were consumed, to
gether with numerous engines, &c. The
oil men took their liisses cooly, and were
rebuilding their dettricks amidst the smok
ing ruins. During file fire there were no
explosiOns, thus Clearly demonstrating
that crude petroleutil is non-explosive.--

in our next. The following are some of
