Some take great precautiods to prevent them from freezing; and these very pre cautions Eve too often the cause of their destruction. In Ili, as in many other farming operations, we' should endeavor to follow nature as much as possible. I have often plowed up potatoes in the spring which have remained in the ground all winter, with but two or three inches of earth around them, and yet they were as good as when fresh dug. BABB Editor and Proprietor Sig- Advertising at reasonable rates. ,THURSDAY MORNING, OCT. 9 THE PUBLIC DEBT The Republican papers are endeavoring to make their readers believe that our pub lic debt is only about $300,000,000. The annual interest on this SUM, at 6 per cent., would be $30,000,000. But the Direct Tax Bill, drawn up by Thaddeus Stevens, and passed by a Republican Congress, for the purpose of paying the interest on the public debt, will extract, ONE H UNDR ED AND FIE TY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS from the pockets of the people! Now, one of two things is certain : either the Republicon papers are wrong in. their esti mate, or Congress has grossly deceived and swindled tie people on this point, by taxing them just five times as heavily: as was necessary I We leave the industrious and hard working masses to judge between the Republican papers and the Republi uan Congress. Tue amount of tax levied by Congresi ($160,000,000), is the interest at 6 per cent., of TWENTY -FIFE HUN DRED MILLIONS OF DOLLARS I ($ 2 ,500,000,000) which sum, it is fair to presume, Mr. Stevens and his fellow-mem bets of the Committee of Ways and Means estimated the public debt would amount to by the time the assessment and collec tion of the tax could be made. If we are wrong, we trust some Repub lican editor, of financial proclivities, wtll set us right, and show why a tax of 5150,- 000,000 was levied to pay the interest for one year one debt of $500,000,000. Ac cording to our notion of figures this is reckoning interest at 30 per cent., and, therefore, looks like rank usury! Wounded in Battle Herbert Bryant, Sergeant Major of the 17th Virginia Regiment, was wounded at the battle of Such Mountain, and tplen prisoner, and is now on parole at his moth er's residence, in Washington; he is recov ering from his wound. Col. M. D. Corse, of this city was also wounded in the hip at the same battle, but continued to dis-• charge his duties. We unders, anci n that Mr. J. Newton Harper, of this city, who has been beyond the Federal lines for some time past, was recently taken prisoner by a Federal scouting party, and is at one of the headquarters below the city.-4l exan . dria Gazette, Keeping Potatoes AN EXCELftENT FAMILY NEWSPAPER.
