TUESDAY MORNING, OCT. 7
The Emperor Napoleon and
Mexico.
A correspondent of the Courrier des
Etats Unis, at Vera Cruz, sends that
journal a copy of the following significant
letter addressed to Gen. Lorences :
MY DEAR GENERAL : I have heard with
pleasure of the brilliant affair of Cumbes,
and with mortification of the check at the
attack on Puebla. It is the fortune of war
to have reverses, which often obscure the
'splendor of success; but that is no reason
to feel discouraged. The National honor
is involved, and you will be sustained by
all the resources that you can desire, and
of :which you may haVe need.
Tell your troops that you have the assur
ance of my entire satisfaction with their
encouragement and fortitude. However
far away they may be my solicitude still
cares for them.
I approve of your conduct, although it
may not'have been comprehended by the
world. You have done well to protect
Gen. Almonte, since he is in a state of war
with the actual government of Mexico.—
Every one who seeks the protection of
your flag has an equal right to that protec
tion. But all that should not at all influence
your future actions. It is contrary to my
intentions,to my origin, and to my princi
ples, to impose -any government whatever
un thellexican people. They can freely
choose what form they prefer. I can require
of them sincerity in their foreign relations,
and I only seek the prosperity and inde
pendence, under a stable and regular gov
ernment of their beautiful country.

Horses love Ladies
An English lady of rank, no;s -, in Egyp
writes home as follows:
"I fear you may deem me rather boastful
of my horsemanship, when I tell you that
two Arab horses which threw their cavilers
did not throw me. The cause, however,
was not in my skill, but in the very remark.
able predilection these intelligent ani
mals feel towards the weaker sex. Let
the wildest Arabian be mounted by a wo
man; you will see-him suddenly grow mild
and gentle as a lamb. I-have had plenty
of opportunities to make the expierment ;
and in my own stable there is a beautiful
gray Arab, which nobody but myself dare
ride. He knows me, anticipates my wishes,
judiciously calculates the deegree of fa :
tigue I can bear without inconvenience.—
It is curious to see how he manages to
quicken his pace without shaking me, and
the different sort of steps he has invented
to remedy contradictory purposes.—
Horses being as liable to forgetklness as
other organized beings, my incomparable
grey would allow his natural ambition to
overcome his gallantry, and if another
horse threatened to pass him, would start
off with the speed of a whirlwind. Woe
to me if, under such circumstances I
were to trhst to the strength of my arm,
or tie power of the bridle! I knew the
gallant charger better. Leaving my hand
loose, and abandoning all thoughts of com
pulsion, I would take to persuasion; pet
him on the neck, call him by his name;
beg him to be quiet, and deserve the piece
of sugar waiting for him at home. Never
did these gentle means fail. Istantly
would he slacken his pace, pick up his
ears as if comprehending his error, and
come back to a soft amble."
