Although not disposed to favor or reeommend
Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of
their ingredients and effects; I yet know of no
sufficient reason why a man may not testify to the
benefit he believes himself to have received from
any simple preparation in the hope that he may
thus contribute to the benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof
laud's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, of this city, because I was preiudieest
against them for many years. under the Impres
sion that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture.

copy of your not(' addressed to me in re
lation to n Field Bureau. The suggestion
is new to me, and Iha , e referred your let
ter to the Ganeral-itt- Chief. The evils it
aims to cure are very great, and I have
supposed to be without any adequate rem
edy. If your plan be practicable, the
Government and humanity will be greatly
indebtei to you, for one of the most pain
ful duties of my office is to answer the
anxious inquiries of relatives and friends
as to the fate of those who were engaged
in battle, and concerning whom I ant un
able to give any information.

The Democratie Conferees of the Fif
teenth Congressional District, composed
of the counties of York, Cumberland and
Perry, met at Bridgeport and nominated
Hon. Joseph Bailey, of Perry county, for
re-election. The District is decidedly
Democratic, and'tim-..e should be no doubt
of gr. Daiiey's elc:tTfon ; indeed it will be
certain if, as we trust is the case, the dif
ferences which threatened disturbance at
one time have berm amicably adjusted.

Cavalry Horses.
At at time when every citizen should be
wi ling to make some sacrifice for his
country, permit me to suggest that the
pressing want of horses for cavalry might,
in a great measure, be supplied, by our
citizens volunteering their carriage horses
for the use of such regiments or companies
of mounted men as are now forming, or
may be formed in our city. Suerly no
lover of his country will hesitate to yield
up some of the luxuries of life for thepro
tection of the nation.
is Ohio, Col. J. A. Garfield, known as
'thepraying Colonel," has been nominated
for Congress in the Nineteenth district qf
Ohio, to succeed Mr. Hutchings. This is
the old Giddings district and the carrdi
pate is that sort of a man. The Democrats
have made the following additional nom
inations: Eighteenth district, George
Bliss,• Fifteenth, James R. Morris; Six
teenth, J. W. White; Seventeenth,
George W. Belden.
THE United States Express Company
took five hundred stand of arms North,
from Illinois, Monday night—a loan from
Governor Yates to the Governor of Min
nessota, for use in fighting the Indians.—
