THURSDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 4, 1862. KIT IiIiTLER FROM BOONVILLLE [Continued from"Yesterday.] There being now breathing time I re , membered the artist•. Strange to say he was nowhere to be seen but Kit who seemed to divine the reason of my puzzled looks pointed up the tree beneath which we etoed- I looked aloft and dimly amid the foliage of tho cedar I described a dan gling pair of bluchers that seemed familiar to me. They were the artist's. "Come down!'• I shouted; "the Indians are goi.e. But my request met with no re sponse, unless an irritable movement of the dangling boots was meant for a negative. Again I hailed them, when, as if to put an end to all further argument they ascend higher among the breeches and were lust to sight. "Guess the scared critter,s beast up the ceader said lit, hiding suddenly as he glanced over the prairie, "Hurrah! Now mate, saddle up right smart." And while I rapidly equipped the horses to my astonishment he busied himself ia casting upon the fire all the property laying shout with the sole exception of our rides and revolvers. • •If you vermeuts get us they'll only git men plunder," he said grimly contemplating his work:of destruc tion. "The Indians iu the creek, you mean I asked. The hunter shook his head and pointed south Wards. Following the direction of his arm I made out, through the fast fading twilight, Ia bawl of horsemen galloping right down upon us. They were a band ofludians.-- As, doubtless, they were acting in con cert with those on foot in the creek, it was plain that our position was no longer ten able. I perceived that Kit was of this opni ion, fur be was now hastily examining our three remaining Lot -es. They were young American cattle, that I had bought on the Columbia, as a speculation for the Cali• furnia market. Two of them were light, weedy-looking fillies; but the third, a powerfully mad,. chestnut stallion, with whit,; , feet, was by far tho best of the lot. My own fitly, though pro;ty heavily weighted, was, as yet, prt..tiy itesh, bar stride was easy and eutsue, and 1 felt she wis warming to her work. But an unpieto•ant sensation came over me, I noticed that Kit's chestnut was already bathed iu n profuse sweat. Sow that we were fairly in the moun tains, our real troubles began. Three days since we bad crossed this range, and hey ing shortly before made the passage of the great Canon Creek, a terrific pass, the trail had it at appeared more dangerous than usu• al. But then we had leisure and daylight to guide its ; now, the white, metallic light of the anion, which brought out in start- Hing distinctness each crag and rocky point it. fell upon, left many dangerous bits of our path in deep obscurity, yet we were com pelled to pass over them in full career; for our pursuers begun to push us to their ut most. At intervals, above the clatter of our horses' hoofs, the mountains behind no echoed with their whoops, and were re idled to front the heights around by the peculiar cry of the white owl, proceeding, as we were aware, from red sentinels, who ' were able to observe every turn of the chase, and thus urged their comrades still to follow. Urged by their riders to the top of their speed, the hardy, unshod little mustangs of our enemies scrambled after us over the dangerous trail with a cat-like . facility of hold not possessed by our own cattle. To add to our embarrassment, our third horse begun to show a desire to stray from the trail, and forced us of ten to lose ground by swerving to head him back again. In fact, it was all we could do to hold our own, and, desperate as our desperate need required it,wepushed on. The steep moun tain side, the other day painfully ascend ed, was now dashed furiously down, the edge of the precipice, usually traversed so gingerly, was spurred fiercely overoanheed- Mg the appeals of our terrified horses, who quivered and snorted in very fear. Without Limning bridle, we spattered through the mountain torrent that ran down the deep gulches, and took Eying the smaller streams. When the last weary mountain- crest was topped and we descended again to the wood ed plain beneath, !should have felt compar atively sate, had it not been for the • deplorable conditiom of our horses. As Kit had foreseen, the mountain range had fearfully tried them. Though my mare, with the instinct of good blood, still an swered when I called to her. I felt was getting fast used up; _ but the chestnut was mu a still worse plight; his drooping crest and laboring stride told the eatermity of his distress- We had just arrived at the ford of Slate creek, a small arm o f Rogue river, when Kit's chestautsuddenly stagger. ed, and then plunged headlong . to the ~ ground. - "Four white legsaud w lute softy; cut his throat arid throw him to the SELECT TALE. r: rp, crows!" exclaimed his rider, bitterly re peating the old saying as he vainly endeav ored to rise him. Meanwhile 1 had rid. den forward and caught the• loose horse. Kit mounted him in silence, and, together we entered the ford; but just be fore we reached the opposite bank, he dismounted, and standing knee-deep it/ the water, put his rein into my hand. "Mate," he said, "we're bound to part company, it we don't want to go under; take both animals and make tracks for Van Noy; this coon'll look not fur his self, somehow. Good bye t'ye." And he Att.
