HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS.
From J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of the En
elm:lore...U.l Religiou* Kdowlechm.
Although not disposed to favor or recommend
Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of
their ingredients and effects; I yet know of no
sufficient reason why a man may not testify to the
benefit ho believes himself to have received from
any simple preparation in the hope that ho may
thus contribute to the benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Moof
land's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, of this city, because I was .trejudiced
against them for many years, under the impres
sion that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture,
lam indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker,
Esq ~for the removal of this prejudice by proper
.ests, and for eneettrageutent to try them, when
suffering from great and long continued debility.
The use of three bottles of those Bitters, at the
beginning of the present year. was followed by
evident relief. and restoration to a degree of
Bodily and mental vigDr which I had not felt for
ix months before, and had almost depaired of ro
sining. I therefore thank God and my friend for
tireeting me to the use of them.

DR. JACKSON—DEAR S,e:—l have boon fr
quently requested to connect my name with corn mendations of different kinds of medicine, but
regardira the t Tactics as out of my appropriate
sphere, I have n all cases declined; but with a
elear proof in various instances, and particularly
in my owh family, of the usefulness of Dr. Hoof
land's German Bitters, I depart from my usual
course, to express my full conviction that for
general debility of the system, and especially Liv
er Complaint it is a safe and valuable preparation.
In 90TRO cases it may fail, but usually I doubt not
it will be very beneficial to those who suffer from
the above causes. Yours very reopectfully,

to. The powerful influence it exerts upon Ner
coos prostration is surprising, I have been con
sulted frequently in reference to your Bitters, and
without hesitation, have recommended it for the
above complaints, and in every instance it has
effectually cured. Your medicine has a great
reputation in Germantown, and is sold in every
Drug Store, and in most of the Grocery stores
here. If any one should question what 1 say, let
them come to Germantown, and I will prove to
their satisfaction, that the Bitters have cured in
this vicinity more than twenty cases of the above
diseases.

PHILADELPHIA. August 12,1862.
Da. C. M. JAcxsoN—Dear Sir: While in Vir
ginia, owing to the change of water, I was taken
with a severe diarrhoea, which seemed incurable,
and which greatly weakened me. When we
sashed Martinsburg. I feared I should have to
ems home; but noticing some of your Bitters in
.he store Mr. IL H. Price. in that town. I pur
based a supply, and on taking it was speedily re
stored to health. The diarrhoea was quickly
checked, and I experienced no return of it. A
number of my comrades, who suffered in thesame
manner and from the same cause, with whom I
shared the Bitters, join me in this certificate. I
taped to return to the seat of war with the Leg
en, and shall certainly take a supply of the Bit
min my knapsack. I would not be without it
r its weight in gold, particularly on goinginto a
undone region.

DAILY POST.:
GEN. STONE.
The arrest, imprisonment, and release
of Gen. Stone has excited much remark
throughout the country. The President
owes it to himself, to Gen. Stone, to com
mon justice that some explanation he
made of this most singular proceeding.—
We clip the following from an exchange
touching upon this subject:
The quiet release of Gen. Charles P.
Stone has been attracting attention. Why
he has been released without a trial sem
inexplicable. 115 d be been guilty of the
charge brought against hint, Haman shoud
not have hung higher than he, but, if he
wro innocent it should have been pro
claimed to the world, and all reparation
made that could, fin., the unjust infamy
that the government attached to his name.
Aly own opinion of Gen. Stone is, that,we
have no purer patriot or more true soldier
than he has shown himself. I knew him
well, and but a few hours before his ar
rest was in conversation with him. In
that conversation he used sentiments of
loyalty that many a man would like to
father. His whole soul appeared wrapped
up in the cause, his love of country was
unblemished; petty and blackened ideas
intended only to flame jealousies, waren
not his love. He was a man who truly
worshipped his whole country, no sec
tional dogmas entered his heart. .1 never
can believe that a disloyal thought flashed
thrmigh his brain. Ott the breaking :out
of the rebellion, when traitors hands isol
ated the seat of Government from the
loyal states, whilst the capitol was Piottrly
threatened with attack and before the
country's heroes could rush to the reseno,
General (then Col. I Stone organized and
took command of the militia of the Dis
trict of Columbia. With it lie guarded
every avenue leading to the Capitol.—
Hourly he rode out among his outposts
seeing that every man was doing his ditty.
Day nor night was his vigilance abated,
an iota until the fact was proclaimed to
the country "Washington is safe." The
President appreciaing his services appoint
ed hint Colonel itt the Regular Armyand a
commission of Ii igadier of Volunteers.
; en. St. rite is a high-toned, honorable
gentleman, and if he ever was n traitor,
he was one from the beginning, and one
a mistaken principle: nothing mean
nor low dictated any of his actions. If a
traitor he could, and would, when it was
in his power. have placed the capital and
Administration in the hands of the rebels;
that he prevented the consummation of
just such an event shows, to my mind,
that eot a drop of disloyal blood flows,
or ever did flow through his veins. This
letter has run out longer than 1 intended
it should. or I would give some facts con
ne••te:f with the lamentable affair at Ball's
Bluff, for which Gen. Stone has been so
11111011 censured, by which light could be
thrown on the. talk that would make Gen.
Stone appear in a more favorable aspect
!: is, to be hoped that the country will re
pair the injury 11113 been done him.
