SATURDAY MORNING, AUG. 23
CITY AND NNIGIIIOIIBOD INTILLIGINCI
CongoHeaton.
Yesterday was the last day, under the
order of the Secretary of War, for receiv
ing recruits for the new regiments, and it
was consequently a busy day. The lucky
recruiting officers who had full companies
weregetting their men together for muster
ing in those nearly full were drumming
vigorously for the few men required to fill
their rolls, and those who had squads were
making the best arrangements for con
solidation. Several companies were thus
formed, and Capt. Ludington, mustering
officer, hail his hands full. The Executive
Committee were engaged in paying out
their $lO bounty to volunteers. We re
gret to say, however, that the same want
of confidence is displayed by recruits re
specting, the county bonds. They say they
have been deceived, as they expected to
receive $5O in cash to leave with their
families. The Committee have held out
no such inducement, and therefore they
are not to blame. Those who refuse to
go by reason of not receiving the bounty
111 cash, make_a great mistake, as there is
no doubt but they can get the money on
the bonds next winter, when it will be
more beneficial to them than now.
We have not ascertained how many
companies have been filled by consolida
tion, but there cannot be less than twenty
five three years' companies, . all told.
Unless an order is issued extending the
time, all will be mustered in to-day, and
no more recruits will be taken for new
regiments,
iiut the old regiments are yet to be
filled up; some 1,500 men are required;
end as there is about ten days for the pur
pose, we believe they will be easily re
pruited, in squads. Recruiting offices
Lave been opened here for most of the old
regiments, and some officers have met
with good success. The committee will
still pay bounty to recruits for old regi
ments up to September Ist. Let us keep
the ball rolling.
Eastern Fruit Market.
Why is it that fruit is held at such high
figures here when it is lower in the East
than for years past? The Philadelphia
Inquirer says: "From ten to twelve thou
sand baskets of peaches arrive in this city
daily, the principal portion being by the
Baltimore Railroad and by sailing vessels
and steamers on the river. The immense
orchards in Sussex county, Delaware, are
very productive. The average size of
peaches of the firEt crop is rather less than
usual, but the flavor is unimpaired. Five
thougand baskets are shipped daily to New
York, the average wholesale price in
Philadelphia being sixty and seventy cents
per basket. At the Camden depot a num
ber of persons are employed in assorting
the fruit and preparing it for market.—
Apples and pears are very plenty, the
former bringing from seventy-five cents to
one dollar per darrel, and the latter only
twenty cents per basket. The Fall crop
of apples promises well. Pennsylvania
and New Jersey supply the early crop,
while Canada even sends her co tuplement
of the later and better varieties. Water-
Melons, citrons and cantelopes are not as
plenty as usual. Watermelons are selling
at twelve dollars per hundred, and citrons
at fifty cents per basket: Next week this,
as well as the other fruit. will be cheaper.
Plums are worth one dollar per basket for
New York importations, and a higher
price is offered for riper domestic vari
eties.''
The capacity of the yard of Brewer,
Burke b• Co., for the storage of oil and
barrels and the facilities for shipments, we
believe, exceed anything of the kind in
the country. We noticed the other day a
long train of cars nearly loaded on the
switch in front of the yard, and their fore
man informed us that their only difficulty
was the want of cars. Their oil is pumped
direct from the river into tanks, alkwed
to thoroughly settle and freed from water
and impurities, then barreled in their ship
ping warehouse along the line of the A. V.
11. It., saving any carting or rough hand
ling of barrels after being placed in ship
ping order. This firm use the celebrated
"toward Tank, which gives an additional
value to the oil.
Card.
We ,the undersigned, citizens of Pitts
burgh and vicinity, having visited Hat
field for the purpose of examining the self
adjusting oil tank.; of Brewer, Burke & Co.,
constructed by Mr. Geo. W. Howard, do
hereby certify that we found them as rep
resented, the most safe and reliable tanks ;
meeting and fatly obviating all the per
plexing difficulties he have hertofore had
(unsuccessfully) to contend with, viz:
leakage, soakage, evaporation and fire,
and we would therefore recommend them
to all dealers in oil as the cheapest and
best mode of storing oil yet discovered.
These tanks, being constructed on scien
tific principles, must strike every one on
examination as they did us, as, just the
thing for the times :

Soldiers' Affray in Camp.
Wm. Hershman, of Co. A, Semple In
fantry, was stabbed by a member of a
Mercer county company, at Camp Howe,
on Thursday afternoon. It appears from
the Mercer county man's statement that
his company was on guard, and that Hersh
man attempted to pass theinckets. The
picket caught him and demanded his pass,
which he was unable to produce. Hersh
man again attempted to run the guard,
when the Mercer county man charged bay
onet upon him, inflicting a very severe and
probably fatal wound in the stomach, be
low the left ribs, penetrating the lining.
Hershman denies that he was attempting
to pass the pickets, and says that the attack
upon him was uncalled for. He is im
proving slowly; but his life is still in dan
ger.

u.t.-17 • cmus,-meier..- Edigoii: A very false
and garbled statement of the war meeting in
Temperanceville having appeared in the roni
etc and Gazette justice to myself requires that I
should make the following statement: T asked
(during a temporary lull in the speaking) for
the speaker "to tell us something about General
McClellan's retreat." The Burgess rushed up
and told me "to shut my mouth." I asked him
what for, he said "for disturbing the peace," I
replied that he (the Burgess) was disturbing the
peace himself-, With that he arrested me, and I
was dragged before him and held to $5OO bail.—
I have served my country faithfully fur fifteen
mouths as a soldier, and to attribute disloyalty to
me, is the working of officials, who will claim
"exemption" when the drat comes on account of
official poition, or the scribbling of "local re
porters" who are good at easing, "Go to the war,"
but who are never to be found there except as
visitors or members of a "sanitary board."

THE ANDREWS PATENT PIPE.
(PATENTED JANUARY 21. 1862.)
RE4t ITIREN ONLY A TRIAL TO
prove its incomparable superiority to any
pipe now in use. It may be smoked without any
dd./crimw or nap/easing eerie. as the oil of to
bacco is not drawn into tke mouth. and the
tongue dots not become furred or coated from in
haling its poisonous properties. The bowl is made
of the finest Devonshire clay, and gives to the to
bacco a peculiarly pleasant fragranee. The to
bacco cannot become swift. as in ordinary Fines.
because the drip beneath receives the saliva that
insensibly escapes into the stem: hence the pipe
never becomes offensively rank. and the breath
of the smoker does not pr oclaim
i to every one he
meets that he has been indulging in t pipe."
When the bowl becomes elegsed. or the drip
beneath requires cleansing. the pipe maybe taken
apart by removing the rim. The clay bowl may
at any time be re-tored to its original whiteness
by burning in the fire. (fist drying it thoroughly)
ore now bowl may be procured of the dealer:
