otherwise expected, and thus the Consti

indispensible. That it will meet the full and

and cling to the Union and the Constitu

people to maintain their freedom, which
the God of Hosts inspired Washington and
his coin-patriots in arms to leave to this
generation. We will, therefore, maintain
our free institutions with the same deter

then, in the presence of the God of battles,
urge upon every-man capable of bearing

Resolved, That we recognize no North,

nature have placed in its hands to accom
plish the high and holy purpose confided '
to them by the American people.
Resolved, That we have heard with
lunch surprise that men hailing from
Europe, (residing in St. Louis,) have
basely asked the protection of the crown
of England to prevent their serving in the
army of the 'Union forces. iVe are of
the opinion that any person who will shel
ter himself, by appealing for protection to
any prince; potentate or sovereignty what
ever, is unworthy to be allowed even a
residence on the soil of America, and
should be driven from the protecting care
of the "Star-Spangled Banner," and such
an act shows them to be cowards, unwor
thy of confidence here or elsewhere.
The meeting was then addressed by
Messrs. Kirkpatriek. M'Connell, Kerr and
Rev. Marks, after which Prof. Eaton re
cited "Our Country's Defenders." The
meeting, which had been a great success,
then adjourned, with three cheers for the
army and na vy—und several present signed
the roll of Captain Anderson, who was in
attendance.

so Stupid?
We were informed on Saturday evening
that the County Commissioners had, when
directed to make an enrollment of the
militia of the county and send it to the
dffice of the Adjutant General at Harris
burg, (under the plea that they had no au•
thority to make such enrollment, and that
it was not their duty to do so,) forwarded
u copy of the list of taxables in lieu
of a correct enrollment list prepared
under their supervision and direction by the
assessors. The superior wisdom which
prompted this course, can be seen when
we reflect that the list sent to the Adjutant
General's office embraces, on the one
hand, many taxpayers who have long
since passed the age of , forty-five, while
on the other hand, very many youths be
tween the ages of eighteen and twenty
two, without families, who would make
•excellent soldiers, are not • included. We
hope, for the credit of the officials named,
that the story is incorrect. If true, mean
tires should be at once taker_ for a proper
enrollment, as the list forwarded will be
of no more value than so much waste
paper.
•
.1 tamp Established,
one great drawback to rapid enlistments
here has been the want of a camp, where
recruits, in squads or companies could be
at once sent, furnished with subsistence
and at once put into active drill. We are
glad to state that this difficulty has been
removed and that Hon. Thos. M. Howe,
Springer Harbaugh and R. 11. Hartl
have aeen authorized by the Ger
ovnor to ey
select a proper location for a camp near
the city. They will at once select a spot
and establish a camp, which will be placed
under control of a United States officer.
They will also make the necessary arrange
ments with Quartermaster Montgonfery to
furnish subsistence, stores, clothing and
and garrison equipage for the recruits as
fast as they are mustered iu. The location
of this camp has been secured through
the efforts of the Executive Committee
and will much facilitate recruiting, while
it will also largely add to the comtbrt of
enlisted volunteers.
The Semple luta :a try.
This is the name given by Capt. W. H.
Moody to the company he is raising for
the war, out of compliment to Mr. William
Semple, dry goods merchant, of Allegheny.
who has generously gave his check for
S5(10 for the organization of the company.
Other gentlemen have also contributed
and Capt. Moody begins recruiting under
favorable auspices. His recruiting °dice
is in the second story of the Dispatch
building, and he has already several re
cruits for three years or the war. We
have no doubt that Capt. M. will raise a
fine company, which will do credit to the
city and country.
War Meeting In Plum Township
A large and very enthwiastic war meet
ing was held in Little Texas, Plum Town-
ship, on Friday evening last. The meet
ing was organized by calling Mr. Jacob
Alter to the chair, and choosing Messrs.
Kuhn and Armstrong as Vice Presidents,
and Mr. llenry Tomer as Secretary. .Ifter
the organization, Mr. A. .1. 11 oolslayer
stated the object of the meeting in a few
forcible remarks, and was .followed by I).
Himbleright, Esq., in 'a speech replete
with eloquence and good sense. Dr.
Shriner followed in a few forcible remarks.
The general object of the meeting was the
obtaining of recruits, a dozen or more of
whom were enlisted on the spot.
Death or De. Thom. Dickson.
ft is with much pain (and our readers
will be surprised to learn the fact) that we
announce the death of Dr. Thos. Dickson,
one of our most popular and successful
physicians. He recently visited the Army
of the Potomac, and while there contracted
the "swamp fever." His illness was not
alarming until last Monday ? when he was
taken to the residence of his brother, Dr.
John Dickson, at Sewickley, where he died
yesterday afternoon. The death of Dr.
Dickson will be a severe blow to a large
circle of friends and acquaintances, to
whom he was endeared by hne social qual
ities.
