In a paper on this subject recently read before the London Association of Fore man Engineers, the author stated that those who conducted the process of manu facturing iron castings were little, if at all, indebted to any published works on science or art.depending mostly ontheir own inge nuity and personal experience in conduc ting the. work. The different qualities of pig iron is an intricate subject. to under• stand, because there is such diversity among them, and without a knowledge of their nature the moulders cannot work to advantage. The density of one brand sometimes differs from another to the ex tent of twelve pounds to the cubic foot, And as the cohesive strength is generally in pro - portion to the density- of iron, the moulder must know this in order to pro duce castings for different purposes.— There is also great diversity in the crys tallization, as well as in the fusibility and fluidity of different pig irons. Some are distinguished for a fine, tirm grain, others for purity and freedom from dross, and others for the beautiful polish which is capable of being given to castings. With all these different traits and qualities a foreman should be acquainted. Feeding the Poor at Williams burg. Col. David Campbell, of the Fifth Penn sylvania Cavalry, the popular and etliciene Military Governor Of Williamsburg. Va., is taking prompt measures to provide for certain citizens of that place, in indigent circumstances, who have applied to him for subsistence. By the Cavalier, a sol diers' paper published at Williamsburg, we observe that he has issued an order di recting the Quartermaster of the post to take charge of the property known as Newport Mills, to be used under his direc tion in grinding . wheat (of which the Gov ernment has large quantities in sheaf and in store) into flour, to be distributed among - the poor of the city and vicinity. This action is necessary. it would appear, from " the want of energy, or from other cause," of the owners of the mills. It .t?r t ;mises. at all events, to meet the ewer gentry, ,Rodies orPeunsylwania Soldiers - Unclaimed. The bodies of the following unclaimed soldiers have been interred by Mr. A. I. Witr Meetings. Meetings to provide bounty for v.' l u,' teers are being held in every part of ,`he State, and they are invariably large, en thusiastic, and unanimous in sentiment and feeling. We notice recent meetings at Williamsburg, Hollidaysburg, Johnstown, and Altoona. The latter was held on last Saturday night. W. H. Wilson, Esq., presided, and the proceedings. were en livened by excelled. instrumental and vocal music. Stirring and eloquent ad dresses were delivered by John Scott, Esq., Hon. Samuel Calvin, L. J. Neff, Esq., Lieut. H. 11. Hopkins, Col. L. W. Hall, and others. Painful Accident. On Monday morning a lad named Tay lor, employed in Coleman's rolling mill, met with a shocking accident. It appears that it was his duty to seize the bar as it came through the roll for the last time, and, with the assistance of another lad, straighten it. By some means he failed to catch the end of one of the bars of half inch iron, and it passed through his leg, requiring the use of the tongs to withdraw it. It is feared the wound is of such a character as to necessitate the amputation of the leg. The Anderson Troop. We have frequently made mention of the "Anderson troop," an independent cavalry company, and General Buell's body guard. Its thoroughness in drill, and fine personnel, has gained for the Key stone State the official acknowledgment of having raised "the best cavalry company in the United States service." The Sec retary of War has acceded to General Bu ell's request that the troop may . be in creased to a battalion, and we are inform ed that officers are to be sent to Philadel , phia, and other points in this State, to recruit for the battalion. War Meeting in Allegheny. The storm of Tuesday evening interfered so much with the meeting announced to take place in the Diamond, Allegheny city, that it has been. postponed until Sat urday evening. A large crowd, who had met before the rain, subsequently organ ized , a meeting in the market house, with Col: R. P. McDowel, as President, Wm. C. Stockton as - Vice President, and Jos. E. Robinson as Secretary. Addresses were delivered by Hon. Robert McKnight and Rev. J. D. Turner, chaplain of the Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry. Injured on the Railroad. James Kerr, of - Latrobe. an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad Co.. was severely injured last week at Huntingdon. He wag unloading railroad iron from a truck, when one of the rails struck him under the left knee, lacerating his leg terribly and also injuring his foot. He was brought home on Saturday, and is now in a fair way of recovery. Co3lllllff Baek. A few weeks can he pleasantly spent here, at moderate expense. even if business calls the visitor to the city daily, as the railroad company are issuing tickets good for the month of August at $5,15. Defending the Border. The Wheeling Intelligencer states that arrangements are now being made to or ganize a sufficient force to prevent the ex pected raid upon Parkersburg. Several young men of Parkersburg, known to be rebels, have recently left that place, it is believed with a view of joining the Moc casin Rangers, whose numbers are con stantly increasing. The guerrillas are be coming very bold and saucy, and there is every reason to anticipate that they intend rnaking a raid upon the border. Teachers Nominated.
