PITTSBURGH, THURSDAY MORNING, JULY 31, 1862.
There is not, perhaps, one of our numer
ous readers who has forgotten theanxietY,
the doubts and fears, which possessed the
public mind immediately after the Bull
Hun battle. Nor is there one, perhaps,
who forgets the thrill of joy which took the
place of all other emotions in the people's
heart, when in the terrible hour of nation
al suspense, the star of George B. McClel
lan rose promisingly from the mountains
of Western Virginia. The veteran Scott,
laying aside all motives hut his country's
welfare, said to the nation, 'here is your
future guiding star : follow him and you
'will he saved."
Amidst the darkness and tempest, the
nation's eye has ever since been bent con
fidingly on the guiding star, and they have
been led by it to glory and success.
When the gallant young commander,
who, in spite of the machinations of his
enemies, is still "first in the hearts of his
countrymen," first arrived in Washington,
he found a single letter waiting tiir him.
Breaking the seal, he learned that it was
from an old friend, a strong advocate of
Southern rights, asking an early inter
view on i( husinessofthe highest importance
to the Government.
For a while NicClellan mused upon the
tone of this missive. Treachery was rain
pant in the capital ; it lurked in every de
partment, and scarcely any one could he
trusted by those who had been selected to
guide public affairs. McClellan's decision ,
wiLs, however, speedily made, and. as
speedily pui In execution. for the sante
evening the writer oldie mysterious letter
was closeted with the new commander for
nearly au hour and a half.
baring the interview the latter elicited
train his visitor information of the utmost
importance, provided it. proved true. But
here 'was the difficulty. The statements
made by the gentleman were all given is II
candid, straightforward manner, and no
cross-questioning could shake it in the
least. McClellan :ixed his eyes upon the
face of his old friend, and scrutinized ev
ery lineament thereof ? but failed to dis•
cover the least expression that might awa
ken distrust.
At last after remaining a minute or so iu
profound thought. he turfed a quick; pen

The gallant McClellan's geneaons feel
ings and impulses welled up within hit
breast, and he was-about to grasp the ham
of his friend, when the position in whicl
he stood toward his 2ountry re-entered h'
mind with full force, and he continued I,

"1 would. —
There was even less hesitancy about this
answer than the most prompt of the
others.
'\Vould you, continued McClellan,
"be willing to go into any portion of the
rebellious States and obtain information
such as would be useful to the Government
in the prosecution of its plans for the
war?"
"1 would."
"Then come here at this time to- tour
tow evening, and I will give you instruc
tions in regard to a certain matter which I
wish you to investigate. If you success
fully accomplish the object aimed at you.
will render your country a moil important
.benefit."
With a cordial shake °Hie hand, Gen.
McClellan and Mr. 1;""" . ** parted, the form
er to address himself to the tremendous
labors betbrc him, and the latter to pre
pare !or one of the most hazardous enter
prises that has been undertaken since the
beginning of the war, an enterprise which
we would not, even at this time, make
public.
During the course of the following day,
McClellan sent for a private in the --
Ohio regiment who had served. under him
in Western Virginia as a scout. In this
line - the Ohio soldier, who was nicknamed
"Weasel Bob," on account of his peculiar
abilities, had no equal. Having traveled
from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean, and
from Oregon to Florida, he was thorough
ly acquainted with the country, and the
various modes and lines of traveling
therein.
• WeaSel Bob adored his commander, and
in return the latter placed in the eccentric
soldier the fullest confidence. !Iron en
tering the presence of McClellan, Bob
glanced about him as though from mere
habit, while the General, smiling at him,
bade him be seated, and immediately
opened the conversation with.
"Robert, I have one of the most diffi
cult and dangerousaffairs to place in your
hail& that you have yet had."
Weazel Bob at this hung his cap on his
broad knee, and placing his long bony
hands thereon, he leaned forward and
looked intently into the face of his Gen
eral; in order to miss nothing the latter
might have to say.
"There will be a man here to- night,"
continutil McClellan, "who has offered
his services to make a tour of observation
through. Virginia. He is a Southern man,
both by birth and principles, and yet he
professes a strong attachment to the
Union."
"Now, it is my intention to send him
into Virginia, upon an errand of high
importance, which could hardly be accom
plished by any other man. He seems to
be true, and worthy of being trusted; but,
yet, .I have a suspicion that he may possi
bly be in league with the rebels, and only
using an apparent loyalty to the Union as
a cloak to hide his fealty and friendship
fo'r the Confederate Government.
"He will, as I have said, be here this
'ea.:et:dug at 10 o'clock, to receive from me
certain - instructions, after which he will
immediately start South. Yoa will also be
