Destructive Fire at Two Mile
Ruu-..011 Refinery Burned.
On Saturday morning, about three
o'clock, a tire occurred Deluw the bridge
on Two Mile Run which destroyed the oil
refinery of Schmertz & Bleakley, which
was located about midway between Penn
sylvania Avenue and the Braddock's Field
road, and other buildings.
The tire (said by some to be the work of
an incendiary, by others to have been
caused by a speck from the works falling
into one of the tanks) was discovery issu
ing from the refinery—it spread rapidly—
and soon the whole building was consumed,
with the large oil tanks outside and aquan
tity of crude and refined oil in tanks. The
loss of the firm is about $3,500—n0 insu-
ranee. Mr. .1. M. Fulton, druggist, had a
lot of crude oil, some $BOO worm, at the
works to be refined, which was also burned.
He had no insurance.
The burning oil flowed into the run and
following the stream down to the Brad
dock's Field road, communicated to sev
eral other buildings, which were also
burned, viz: the blacksmith shop . of Peter
CLauelly, extending partly over the run,
the old toll-house, built over the run, a
stable belonging to Geo. Fawcett, saw-mill
proprietor, and a trame dwelling occupied
by David Huey, driver for Mr. Fawcett,
with his furniture.-
The root of the tavern stand formerly
occupied by H. Beaumont was burned off
and the building otherwise badly damaged.
The grocery store of Manus McCloskey,
on the road, near the run, was also consid
erably damaged. A house belonging to
John Connolly was slightly burned and
another narrowly escaped destruction.—
The Connellsville Railroad bridge, crossing
the run, near the road, was damaged to
some extent, and its destruction was only
prevented by water thrown from the ten
der of a locomotive, which ran up near
enough for that purpose.
The Duquesne steamer and Hope Hose
Co., both on the ground early, did good
service in flaying the hotel. The Duquesne
pumped water from the Monongahela
river, furnishing enough for her own use
and that of the Hope Company, who at
tached their hose. The othereng ines also
dia good service.
Messrs. Schmertz & Bleakley are of the
opinion that their refinery was fired and
oiler a reward of $5OO for the detection of
the incendiary.

Ward offers, if Hammitt wishes to ascer

country to engage in a five mile race (the
only proper distance for a teat of the
championship) two and a half miles and

New Counterfeits.
A new altered $5 on the Exchange Bank
of this city has been put in circulation.
The principal vignette represents three
mechanics apparently engaged in conver
sation. On the right end of the bill is a
portrait of Franklin Pierce and figure "5;"
on the left end State arms and "five."
This is a very smooth and deceptive look
ing affair.
Five dollar notes, purporting to be is
sued by the Manufiteturers* Bank, Hart
ford. Indiana, are being extensively circu
lated in Cincinnati. The bills are well
gotten up, and calculated to deceive.
The issue is a fictitious one there being
no such bank in Indiana. There may be
other denominations bearing the same
name. The s's are as follows: s's, lower
r. e. child with a lamb; "five" above; I.
e. smith erect with a sledge; ." 6" above.
Regulation* foe Shipping.
On Saturday morning Collector Batch
elor received new instructions relative to
clearances here, which places shippers in
the same position they occupied during
the winter and spring. The letter of in
structions, which we. give,. fully explains
itself:
" PITTSBURGH, July 18th, 1862—Sir:
Hereafter, and until otherwise authorized
you will require all boats clearing at this
port for points below Cincinnati, to take
out regular clearances at the Custom House
for each trip, and you will also require
permits to be taken out at your office for
each shipment. of goods to points rand
)(aces on both sides of the river below
ouisville. For the clearances you will
charge twenty-live cents, and for the per
mits twenty cents each.

In regard to Bronchitis, Asthma, Con

it is desirable that correct idess should exist PO far
as the prevent advanced condition of medical
science can furnish them.
We know that in all diseases a timely applica
tion of rational remedies is more than half the
battle, and theaphorism which teveles that pre
vention is better than a cure," applies with pe
culiar force to the case of Consumption, which, it
once FIRMLY established. rarely, if ever. gives
way, even in the most skilful treatment 'and the
most sedulous care.
Let all. therefi re. who hare reason to appre

not fail to obtain such salutary advice, with refe
