Argument upon a Habeas Cor ona-Parties Aeeused or Har der Admitted to Ball. In the Criminal Court yesterday morn ing, before Judges Mellon. Ritchie and Adams, the habeas corpus taken out in the case of A. Miller, Henry Hoer, David H.. Baity, Edward ICirkehartz, Fred. X-eieh, Fred. Wincher and Geo. Nessen-1 thaler, charged with being implicated with I Aeenan in the killing of young Obey, I came up for hearing. After the examfna tion of some five or six witnesses, whose testimony was unimportant, E. P. Jones. Esq., addressed the Court at length in he-, halt of the prisoners, asking for the dis charge of Kirkchartz and the holding to Gull of the others. Thos. M. Marshall, Esq , followed on the same side, arguing that as no higher offence than manslaugh ter could be charged against the parties, that they should be admitted to bail. The; application was offered by District Attor ney Miller and F. H. Collier, Esq., who argued the matter at some length. Judge Mellon said the greatest difficul ty in the way was the fact, that the men had been committed for murder, as was to be presumed upon evidence takenbv the mag istrate, and the defendants must clear themselves of any complicity in the homi cide or show that thair offence was not so serious as to debar their release on bail. After some further argument, the Court, after consultation, decided to admit Hour. Kirkchartz.and Nessenthaler to bail. Thev gave security in the sum of 53,000 each to 1 answerat Court and were released. Twelve or «he Fifth lavalr.v T». keu Prisoners. On last Monday morning two squadrons of Col. Camp'opH's Fifth Pennsylvania Cavalry, stationed at Yorktown." under command of. Major \\ ilson, crossed the i ork river to Gloucester, and from thence rode up the country towards Kichmond. Subsequently the main body halted, and a detachment of twelve men, under com mand of Quartermaster Bay ley, went in search of a wagon loaded with commissary stores, which was understood to bn some distance in advance. Imprudently the party rode within nineteen miles of Rich mond before they discovered the wagon, and driving off the guard, took possession °v, . ® A few of the men were left in charge, while the Quartermaster, with the balance, went on with the inten tion of demolishing a fjrry a short distance off. Before reaching the river, however, they were met by a superior force of guer rillas, and a skirmish took place, result ing in the wounding of Lieut. Bayley, and the capture of the party-. The guerrillas then proceeded to the captured wagon and took in charge the guard. Only one man escaped to the main body, and on Tuesday night the force recro3sed to Yorktown. The “Butchers’ Asaoctatlou’’ Prosecuted for Issuing Nhin plusters. A number of :he shinplasters of the Butchers’ Association having been passed in the Allegheny market yesterday morn ing, Bait was entered before Alderman Kincaid against Richard Danver, Treasur er of the Association, by Wm. \V. Ward, of the firm of White, Orr & Co. Mr.' Dan ver was absent from the city and no time has yet been fixed for a hearing. The in formation charges a violation of the Act of Assembly and is accompanied by one of the “shinplasters,’’ coarsely lithographed, representing twenty-five cents. The Butch ers' Association have taken legal advice and will insist that they do not violate the law in letter or spirit. Mr. Ward, desirous of preventing the flooding of the city with this paper currency, has employed able counsel, and expresses his determination of bringing suit against all individuals or corporations who violate the law. He will be seconded by many of our best citizens, who foresee the troubles a large circulation of such trash will bring upon the commu nity. Fatal Railroad Accident. On Monday afternoon, Patrick Grant, employed at the outer depot of the Penn sylvania Railroad, was instantly killed, un der the following circumstances: He was a.t work under a car on one of the sidings, when a~shifting engine drove a train of empty cars up against the car under which he was working. The deceased, on hear ing the noise, scrambled out, and on rais ing his head, was caught between the bumpers, breaking the skull, and causing instant death. Deceased, who resided in Lawrenceville, was about forty years of age, andleavesa family. Coroner McClung held an inquest and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Ceptured. One morning last week, four men—Cor- poral Hatch, Fourth Maine: George Mc- Grew, One Hundred and Fifth Pennsyl vania ; Henry Crooks, Sixty-third Penn sylvania, and J. T. Holly, Fifty-seventh Pennsylvania— went out from General McClellan’s army, contrary to orders, to search a farm-house near by for arms. They never returned, and it was subse quentlyascertained they were captured and sent to Richmond. bleat. Janes Brown. One of the Richmond papers gives the name of Lieutenant. James Brown, Co. A, of the Sixty-second regiment, as among a number of wounded prisoners brought from the James river to Richmond. Telegraph Corps. J. W. Mr. Editor :—I beg to invite attention to the long talked of, but, for some years, almost forgotten project of the Steuben ville Railroad. It is a direct continuation of the Steubenville & Indiana Railroad (Columbus to Steubenville) front its East ern terminus to Pittsburgh. The distance is 41 miles, cutting off 32 miles of the cir cuit described by the circambenduous, or river road. On one fifth, of this (41 miles) the iron is dotvn and more than jf of the grading and much of the masonary, is al ready done. It passes over the very best agricultural lands of Allegheny and Wash ington counties, along valleys and by hills, thickly settled with an intelligent, relig ious and notedly industrious population. In addition to agricultural productions proper, the latter county is the greatest wool-growing district in the United States, the present clip beiug estimated at not less than $600,000. At Mansfield (7 miles from Pittsburgh), • the Charters Railroad branches,2o miles,to Washington; and there connects with a road in opera tion to Wheeling, Virginia. The fertility of the Chartiers Valley is well known; and on the lines of both the Steubenville & Chartiers Railroads, the country abounds m bituminous coal of the very best quality, which will bo largely sent to Pittsburgh, ior manufacturing, andto Steubenvilleand V heeling for shipment on the Ohio to the great South-west. Much of the work on the Chartiers Road is completed, and the company being in good condition, are ready to move forward so soon as there is n prospect of the Staibemillß Road being made. Thus, in addition to great local advantages, the construction of tbc Steubenville Road will greatly reduce the distance between Phila delphia and Cincinnati, and bring Pitts burgh in direct communication with the roads at Wheeling and Steubenville and the vast network centering at Columbus. A multitude of causes conspired, a few years ago, to suspend this work—the chief one being the want ot a right of way across the Panhandle of Virginia and the Ohio fiver. Ey certain legislation of Virginia, in ISiiO. and a very recent act of Congress, however, the right is now clear and indis putable to bridge the Ohio and operate a road from Pittsburgh to Steubenville. All, therefore, that is wanting is the co operation of all parties interested, toeom plete thu.ente.rpnse. Let tile landholders release their damages, let the contractors be liberal enough in induce the new com pany lo commence the work immediately and let .Pittsburgh show favor, mid soon a road will be built of vast advantage to nil and form another bond to hold the. States to gether.
