garden, il would he worse than useless to
argue with them. Unable to appreciate
the beauties of nature, or understand the
luxury of a woll-cultivnted garden, they
plod along in the same path their fathers
trod before them, while
*‘The primrose by tho river's brim.
Is but a simple primrose tu him.
Ami it is nothing more."
But those who feelan interest in nature’s;
beauties and benefits; we desire to urge
them to attend to their gardens, that they
may reap the benefit of their labor; and,
by reminding them of their duties, we
hope to prevent any losses thut might
otherwise occur to them through forgetful
ness or neglect.
The following notes we have condensed
from the American AgricvlturalUt:
There are a few general principles which
every gardener should bear in mind. Do
any hand weeding, but neither hoe nor
stir the soil in wet weather. The drier the
weather, the more beneficial is it to stir
the surface, provided the rootlets be not
touched. Liquid manure must be' used
with extreme caution in dry weather, and
its effects are much more noticeable in
showery times. Watering once commenced
must be continued —watering the plant is
of little avail, bnt it is the soil which must
be moistened all about the plant, and 'bat,
too, below the surface.
Aspargus may be injured bytoolonguud
too close cutting; when green pens and
string beans come, let it grow. It should not
be cut much after mid-summer, .1 une 2t>th.
Beans may be planted anv time during
the month, but it is desirable not to delay
much after the first; even Limas will do
well when planted the first week ill June,
if they have frequent hoeing and liquid
manure.
Beets—Sow long blood ami blood turnip
in mellowsoil before the tfoth, for fall ami
winter use.
1.821 00
27.919 33
Carrots sown now will make a good crop. .
Celery—Sow for winter crop, and pick
out young plants, to have a good supply of
well grown stocky ones for transplanting .
in July. For fall crop, transplant about
the middle or fall of tho month, in trenches
4 feet apart, a foot deep and well manured 1
and mellow.
Cucumbers, Melons and .Squashes—Pitt
in cucumbers for pickles any time during
the month. Remove gauze frames before
the plants crowd them. Occasional water
ings with liquid manure, made by mixing
fresh cow dr.oppings or hett manure with
water, will repel insects and rapidly for
ward the growth ; dust with ashes and plas
ter or lime. The striped bugs may be easily
taken early in the morning, while the dew
is on, ami destroyed. I-lxaminc the under
Bide <jf the squash leaves for the eggs of
the squash bug; hundreds may be killed
betore hatching.
Rhubarb —Cut up and dry or bottle a
good supply for winter use. Let no seed
stalks run up.
Tomutoes —Transplant for main crop :
use a broad shingle or two to protect from
the sun at first, and after a day or two shift
it so as to reflect the heat, upon the plant.
Hoe frequently, and pinch in some of tin
leading branches to give a bushy habit and
earlier fruit. Hang the vines over poles
and slightly inclined, to keep the fruit from
the ground and to give them air.
Lettuce —Few varieties do well after mid
summer. The Tcnnisball and Curled Sile
sian grow as well as any, Sowortransplant
into partial shade, and water frequently.
Onions —It is important to force a quick
development, hence thin out seed onions
to three or four Inches nnd stir often. Po
tato onions (the best for the family table. I
may bo planted as late as the first week
in June, eight to ten inches apart. For
pickles; sow rather thickly in poor soil.
Parsneps may be sown early this month;
keep the surface mellow; they enjoy liquid
manure.
Peas —Sow for late summer use and for
seed. They will not be troubled bv bugs
if sowed after mid-summer.
Potatoes —Late plantings often do very
well, escaping rot when early ones suffer,
but the reverse, is oftener true.
Radishes—Sow spring varieties among
other crops where they will bn partially
shaded. Winter varieties, (Black Spanish,
Late Brown, Ac.) last of the month for use
in August. Leave Home of the early crop
- seed, and for seed pots to be used for
pickles.
Strawberries—Remove all grass and
, weeds, and mulch the ground' with tan
bark or short straw, before picking com
mences. Keep the beds well watered
while fruit is forming, it there be dry
weather.
