WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 18 CITY 'at RIGBOIROOD INTBLIIGENCB The.Jehaston Will Case This case, originally tried in 1860, was taken up in the Court of Common Pleas on Monday and still occupies the attention of Judges, jury and attornies. The facts are briefly these: William Johnston, of East Liberty, diedin 1860, leaving all his prop erty, valued at $25,000 or $30,000, to the daughter of Mrs. Rosanna Bolton, a woman with whom he had lived for many years, having separated from his lawful wife. ' The will was contested by Alexander and Elizabeth T. Dean, (the latter being the only daughter of Mr. 3 ohnston by hislawful wile.) The probate of the will was objected to upon the ground that Johnston was not of sound mind when he executed the instrument ; that it was procured by fraud, coercion, and undue influence; that he was laboring under a delusion in relation to his heir at law, and that he was so im portuned by others as to be deprived of voluntary action in - the- premises. • The first trial resulted in a verdict for the executors, the plaintiffs. The case, how ever, turned upon the admissibility of certain evidence tending to show the facts on which the objections to the will were grounded—such as the adulterous inter course of Johnston with Mrs. Bolton, etc. The eourtruledthis evidence inadmissable, but upon nresenting the case to the Supreme Court the judgment was reversed, and a new trial awarded. A mass of testimony has been offered on both sides, but it is not yet concluded. The ..ase may go to the jury to-day. The St. Lawreuee Hotel. With all persons visiting foreign coun tries or strange cities there exists a very natural desire to seek and associate with their . own _fellow-citizens, while absent from home, and this disposition frequently exhibits itself in the formation of close intimacies, during a few days' or weeks' intercourse abroad, between persons who have met daily at home for years without being more than casual acquaintances. Away from home we generally find our citizens keeping company one with another and usually stopping at• the same hotel. This is especially the case in Philadelphia —visit that place when you will and yuu find all (or nearly all) the Pittsburghers in that city at the St. Lawrence, in friend ly intercourse. This feature of the house makes it particularly attractive to our citi zens, who can go there sure of a warm wel come and every attention from the tour teous host, W. S. Campbell, Esq., a former resident of our _owu city, who is ever pleased to meet his old acquaintances and use every exertion to make them feel as comfortable as in their own houses. Add to this the splendid table set at the St. Lawrence, its comfortable apartments, careful attendants and central location. (being within easy reach of the entire business portion of the city) and we do not wonder that it is a favorite resort with our citizens—who only desire quiet, com fort and good accommodations. It is a pleasure to us to speak of the St. Lawrence and its gentlemanly proprietor and_ wt take great pleasure in commending it, noi only to Pittsburghers, but the travr public generally, as a most desirabk ping place when visiting the East - Supplement to the School taw. The last legislature passed an net, making some considerable changes in the School Law of the State. The most im portant may be briefly summed up as fol lows: Ist—The school month to consist of 22 days. 2d—"The President and Seere• tory of a School Board can file a certificate of the indebtedness of the collector of the School Tax, in the Prothonatory's office. and the certificates will hare the same op eration as a jndgment. 3d—The County Superintendent, before entering on his du ties, shall swear or affirm that he will per form the duties of his office honestly, im partially, obediently, and according to law. 4th--Authorizes the trustees of any academy or seminary in this Com monwealth, which received any' money or land therefrom for educational purpos es, by deed of not less than two thirds of -theit. number, to convey all the real es tate, buildings and property and funds of, or belonging thereto, to the Board of Di rectors or their successors, of the com mon schools of the district. sth—lic quires that the Board of Directors shall publish an annual statement of the amount of moneys received and expended, and the amount due from collectors, and setting forth all of the financial operations of the district, in not less than ten written or printed handbills, to be put rip in the most public place in the district.' Loretto Springs. This delightful- summer resort will be opened to the public for the season on the 29th. inst., and remain open for visitors until cool weather. It is situated one mile from the village of Loretto, Cambria coun ty, and four miles from Cresson Station. on the Pennsylvania Railroad—easily ac cessible by. a substantial plank road. The location is a beautiful one, the air bracing and the buildings furnished with every con venience for the guests, being roomy and well ventilated, with baths, swimming cat aract, bowling alleys,_billiard tables, &c. - The:table will be well supplied with the cliaicest delicacies and luxuries in market aad the bar stocked with the best wines _and . liquors. The waters of the springs are famed for their medical properties and much benefit is derived from their use. A= good band of music is engaged for the season and the hunter and sportsman can fintl..abundance of game and trout in the vicinity. Indeed, this favored locality combines every attraction to those seeking relaxation in summer and is peculiarly suited to invalids. Half fare tickets to Cresson are issued by the Pennsylvania Railroad company, and coaches are wait itig on the arrival of every train to convey visitors to the Springs. A few weeks spent here would be beneficial to any one. A Sanitary Commission in Phil adelphia. This is a new invention, to which we di rect the attention of every smoker, as it deprives smoking of its deleterious effects, by separating the oil Of tobacco and keep ing it out of the mouth. The tobacco never becomes moist, and cannot become offensively rank. The improvement con sists in placing a howl of Devonshire clay, perawated with small holes, inside the brier-wood pipe. The bowl holds the to bacco, and gives room for a free circula tion of air and condensation of vapor be. tween it and the wood. The pipe is man ufactured by Messrs. Arm Shot OH Lawrence Dilworth, of the Sixty-!•'irst regiment. had his urm shot off the day fol lowing the battle near Richmond, by the accidental discharge of a musket. Post-mike Department that single rate letters which are enclosed in envelopes embossed with both the one and the three cent stamp of the old style, have in some instances been treated by postmasfers as wholly.un paid, and extra postage thereon exacted on delivery. Public notice is therefore given that stamped envelopes of this de scription, which are desimied to facilitate the payment of the carrier's fee in cities have not been superseded, and that they are perfectly valid for the prepayment of postage to the amount which the stamps indicate. Warrant Issued. We learn that a warrant has been- issued for the -erre:A of a lad named Shovelin, for wilfully shooting another buy named 'right, on Sunday afternoon. We alluded to the affair yesterday as an accident, but it is now alleged that the shooting was deliberate—that Shovelin had a grudge against Wright and told him he would shoot—then capping the pistol, fired, the wad striking Wright on the lip, injuring him severely, as we stated. Nine Months in the Quarternitni ter's Department. We have received a copy of this long expected book, from the pen of Capt. Chas. Leib, who, from an experience of several mouths in the capacity of Quar termaster with Gen. Rosecrans in Western• Virginia, is thoroughly competent to make his snbject interesting. It shows, as it professes, " the chances fur making a million, — and is, withal, a very readable and interesting work. It can be had by addressing Charles Leib, P. 0. box 17::m, Cincinnati. 0. Godry for July. We have received the .luly number of Godey's Lady's Book from J. W. The present., being the first of a new volume, is superb and we call special attention to the tine steel engraving "Summer,'' which is alone worth all the number costs. Every lady should take Godey. Go and hear him. Commissary Walker. We had a visit yesterday from Captain R. C. Walker, of Elizabeth, now a Com missary of Subsistence to Gen. Butter field's brigade. He is home on sick leave and will return to assume his duties as soon as he recovers his health. Captain Walker is well known in this county and makes, we heir, a most efficient officer. Picnic. Our cotemporary, the Courier, of yes terday, in a long editorial eulogizing Pres ident Davis, whom it calls "our Moses !" makes the following asssertion: " .I."t we have been reliably informed that men of high official position among us—men of good intentions, but of mista ken and misguided patriotism—are sowing the seeds of discord broadcast in our midst by preaching a crusade against President Davis. and calling for a general convention of the Confederate States to depose him and create a Military Dictator in his place!" Here it is put forth that there are men of "high official position amongst us" who are preaching a "crusade against Presi dent Davis, and calling for a general con vention of the Confederate States to de pose him and create a military dictator in his place!" The publication of this as sertion, according to the Courier's' logic, will tend more to encourage Yankeedmu and damage our cause than anything that has yet been put forth against President Davis. For ourselves we deem it due to truth to say that we never saw the idea suggested of callinga general convention of the Confederate States to depose Presi dent. Davis and create a military dictator in his place," excepting in the above ex tract from the Courier. The Courier is our author for the grand revolution it dis closes. We know no other. That President Davis is ,an incubus on Our cause we do not doubt. Although carefully covered over with the mantle of secresy by Congress, enough has been dis closed by stern realities to show his total incompetency to govern the affairs of the Confederacy. He has lost the confidence of both the army and the people; and, if, tin election to-morrow was to come off for the Presidency, we do not believe that he would get the vote of a single State in the Confederacy. Yet we have seen nowhere any opposition to him advocated or pro posed, other than such as the Constitution clearly authorizes. If the. Provisional Congress would do its duty, President Davis could be readily driven into a course of efficiency ; This is all. we have seen a vocated ANTHONY MEYER and Ink outhuil (heck er (timid, Pu 1,14: opinion carried out in Congress, With the legislative power which Congress possesses, us to measures and men, can control the tiovernment, and enforce e11i• cieney in the Administration. But this can never be done by those who look up , on President Davis as "our Moses!" COO ' grt'Sti must assume its duties under the Constitution as an independent element of power. It must abandon the idea that it pi only IL secret hotly for registering the will et the President. It must be the pen• ph e standing forth in the light of day— clothed with the whole legislative power of the government. and with their agent, the President, instrumental for their deliv erance. lint it President Davis is to lie treated ILS • ' our Moses,•• we really do not see the use of Congress. The militazy dictator, the Courier seems to, abhor is practically upon us. The sooner Congress is abol isued the better. It may be smoked without any eletesioun or inipteasont effects, as thy oil of to bacco is not drawn into tke mouth, and the tongue does not become furred or coated from in haling its poisonous properties. The bowl is made of the finest Devonshire clay, and gives to the to bacco a peculiarly pleasant fragrance. The to bacco cannot become moist, as in ordinary because the drip beneath receives the saliva that insensibly escapes into the stem: hence the pipe never becomes offensively rank, and the breath of the smoker does not proclaim to every one he meets that he has: been "indulging in a pipe." When the howl becomes clogged, or the drip beneath requires cleansing, the pipe may be taken apart by removing the rim.
