Before Richmond. NEAR FAIR OAKS STATION, FIVE MILES FROM RICIIMOND, • Friday, June 6, 18624 Not yet in Richmond, though we are in hailing distance of it. The weather has been against us all the time. Our wounded have all gone to the rear. The excitement and trouble attending the wounded is near ly over, and the only care now is to get something to eat. There has been consid erable firing among the pickets, and at oue time a threatening move was made, by which we lost one man of the California Regiment. They fired artillery at inter vals, but we did not reply to it from this side of the river. Everybody seems to be in good spirits, and many believe that the rebels are even now on the retreat from Richmond. Our balloon will detect any such movement, except it be made in the night or in a storm. Casey and his whole division have been sent to the rear. Many of his men were killed in camp while eating their dinners. The dead are nearly all buried; a few are still scattered through the bushes in the swamp, but they are the exceptions. In many instances the enemy's dead and our own are buried side by side or in the same grave. Many can never be recognized by any marks; others, who had friends. are buried with a pine board at their head. or a rough stake to token their last resting place. On the roadside, beyond the posi tion of Gen. Casey, are a number of rebels buried. One, grave has written upon the head - board,— "C F. DARLING & w. C. PAINE, Company I t, Fifth Alabama; died May 81. With their blood they sealed their devotion to their country's cause. Some of their comrades yet alive to avenge them. how blest the gallant men sleep over whom a grateful country weeps. So it appears the Fifth Alabama drove in the pickets at the edge of the camp.— Au ambulance still sticks in the mud where the rebels left it, which was taken from the Second Rhode island at Bull IZun. Nearly all of our wounded will live, but nearly all the rebels will (lie or lose their limbs, oui bullets, tir,(.l from the rifles. either kill or cause amputation. while most of theirs arc round halls and do not tear the flesh. __ .... _. Our iteacued Wounded. Thejey expressed I.)y our wounded sol diers who were left on the battle- field after the retreat of the rebels, cannot be do , scribed. Many of thew had given tip the hope u ever again seeing their Comrade s and homes, and were in expectation every moment of being cruelly butchered by the foe. The mental suffering endured by them was intense in its character, in most cases far exceeding their bodily pain.
