By an exa nination of the register of the Taylor House, the leading hotel of this place, I find recorded the names of persons connected with the Ist, 2d, 10th, 18th, 21st, 25th, 31st, 32d, 37th, 42d, 52d, 57th and 58th Virginia; the oth, Bth and 9th Louisi ana; Ist Maryland; 21st North Carolina; 10th Mississippi, and 15th Alabama Regi ments of infantry, and the Second Regi ment of Confederate Ihfantry. There are numerous names connected with these regiments, showing clearly that they were here as organized bodies. In addition to this, Major Wheat's battalion of Louisi ana Tigers were with them, numbering four hundred. • The cavalry force consisted, so far as the register discloses, of Ashby's Cavalry, 28 companies strong of the 2d, 6th, and 7th Virginia Cavalry, and the First Maryland. There were no less than thirty pieces of cannon passed down the main street of this town during Saturday after noon, whilst Jackson's army was on the retreat. Doubtless the balance of the 50 pieces he was known to have passed by other routes, so as not to be visible to my shrewd and intelligent, though boyish in formant. The rebel batteries are organized as ours are, and have six guns to a battery, where the calibre is not above twelve pounds, of one hundred and fifty-six men. To fifty guns, then, they would have 1,300 men. In their twenty regiments and a half of infantry, if they 'lumbered eight hundred to a regiment, and I doubt if they num bered more. the infantry force would reach about 16.400. Their cavalry force, upon the same basis of calculation to the regi ment, would reach nearly, if not quite, 5,000. Thus Jackson came into the valley with little if any force under 23,000. So much for the curious but significant dis closures of a hotel register. Escape of PkUadelphlano. Six members of the 110th Pennsylvania, all of whom are residents of Philadelphia, contrived to effect their escape from Jack- son during his retreat. I was only able to get the names of four of them: Charles Wilson, residing on Fifth near Fitzwater street, Henry O'Neil..lno. Dunn and Win. Stevenson. They hid themselves in an old building at Strasburg, and as soon as the last. of the rebels passed they came out and made good time for this point. on was taken by Ashby's cavalry, and the troopers of that somewhat mythical caval ry leader were only prevented &pm shoot ing him by the direct intervention of their , chief. Another Gallant Escape. Twenty-five of the prisoners taken du ring Banks' retreat by the rebels contriv ed to conceal themselves dnringthe sharp attack made by Fremont's cavalry upon Jackson's rear, atthe bridge which crosses the Shenandoah near Mount Jackson, in a hospital. After the Confederates had crossed the river they entered the Union lines, and were ordered by Gen. Fremont to join their regiments at once. Hence their return to this point. They were most ly members of the Ist Maryland, Col. Ken ley's regiment. Colonel Murphy. These escaped prisoners all concur in the statement that the gallant Colonel of the Twenty-ninth Pennsylvania Volunteers is alive and well, though a prisoner in the hands of the rebels. He is said by them to be in good spirits and bears up under his misfortunes exceedingly well, and hopes to be soon exchanged. There is some hope of his early exchange. Fremont at Mount Jackson. Fremont pressed the rear of 4 lackson so closely at this place, on Tuesday morning, that Jackson's infantry absolutely fired the bridge across the. Shenandoah before Ash by could cross"with a portion of his caval ry, covering the retreat. As soon as Ash by perceived the flames begin to breathe and twine themselves in serpentine folds about the structure, he called upon his men to follow him, and they boldly dashed over, amidst a storm of fire. Their horses' feet had barely touched the shore opposite to the town, when the span first fired fell sizzing and hissing hot into the river below. This officer, a graduate of West Point, and long schooled in the wild cavalry en counters with the Indians of Texas, leads Fremont's advance. Fremont ordered him to swim the river at once. It must have been it grand sight to have seen those two thousand cavalry swimming a swollen and-rapid stream like the Shenandoah.— But the crossing with effected with safety, and but little lose,-under a heavypire from the guns of the enemy; and the fierce pur suit again begin,' • . • FreimanVs Rapidity. Tnis• bridge was burned about seven o'clock in the morning. • By ten, Fremont had a pontoon bridgelaidi' and had com menced to cross hie infantry ind artillery. DAILY POST. FROM THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY. GeimeTr — allia — yard. Mat Colutatii. PITTSBURGH, FRIDAY MORNING, JUNE 13, 1862. A Set-to Between Blind lkLen. The following good story is told by the "local" of the Courier ties Elate Unis: A finv days since a poor blind man,. hav ing on his hat a placard stating his infirm ity, and carrying a box with confectionery. stood on the corner of Broadway and Rec tor street. At the same time another blind man, with the words "1 am blind" OD his hat, was coming down the street in another direction. A little casercontain ing cakes and confectionery, wassuspend ed from his neck. Suddenly a cry of dis tress arrested the passers-by, and turning, they beheld the two blind men on the ground, struggling in a mixture of can dies, cakes and bon-bons. To add to the Confusion the two men, exasperated at the disaster, were hurling at each other epi thets more forcible than polite, and had it not been for the interference of some gentlemen, they would have come to blows. "You blockhead." said one, "why didn't you look out for your feet ?" "And you, why didn't you get, out of my war ?" "How could I when lam blind?' •' Von blind?—so am I.•• In short, this expla nation was followed by a good understand idg between both parties, and the good understanding by a touching recognition.
