°Huse XL ENTIMMLY VEGETABL EI NO ALOOHOLIC PREPARATION How the Forger, Col. Cross, Forged Himself out of the ... Eas tern Penitentiary—Remarkable Affldr. On Monday last, C. S. Marshal Mil -1 ward ' of Philadelphia, received a letter, purporting to come from Mr. P. H. Wet ! son, Assistant Secretary of War, enclosing a petition for the pardon of J. Buchanan Cross, the forger who was serving a term of imprisonment in the Eastern .Peniten tiary. The letter set forth that Cross was wanted to be used on special business by the War Department ; that he was to be sent South: and that his speedy pardon was very desirable. The Marshal was directed to obtain the signatures of Dis trict Attorney Coffey, Postmaster Walborn and Collector Thomas -to the petition, and to take it to Harrisburg for the considera tion of Governor Curtin. He was special ly enjoined in the letter not to commu nicate on the subject with any of the local authorities, nor to intrust the business to a subordinate, hut to bring Cross to Wash ington himself. Suspicion of the gene inene,s of the letter never once entered the mind of the Marshal. He had a knowledge of the handwriting of the As sistant Secretary of War, which the let ter appeared to he in, and the envelope and paper upon which it was written were the same as is used in the War De- I pertinent and the letter itself had come from Washington under the frank, as snp posed, of Mr. Watson. Marshal Millward lost no time iu obtaining the signatures of I the District Attorney and Collector to the petition as directed, and he would have ap plied fur that of the Postmaster, but Mr. Walborn was not in the city. The same day he set out Ihr Harrisburg with the let ter and petition, which he laid before the Governor upon his arrival. He found that the Governor had received a letter similar to the one he had with him, purporting to be front the Assistant Secretary of War, and requesting, by order of Secretary Stan ton' the pardon of Cross, the forger. The handwriting of both letters was identical, and the petition was in the same. Like the Marshal, the Governor did not enter tain a doubt of the genuineness of the let ter and petition. and he directed the par don of Cross to be made out. The Mar shal then telegraphed to Deputy Marshal Jenkins to meet hint at the railroad depot on his return to the city, and to have a car riage for him, which he did. On his arri val, the Marshal and the Deputy rode to the Eastern Penitentiary. and the pardon of Cross was presented to the i%artlen, much to his surprise. Cross was soon brought from his cell to the Warden's room, where the hag was taken off hishead, and he was confronted with the rnited States official.. On the way up the Mar shal had told the Deputy where he was going and what for, but had ab stained from saying anything further. He had remarked, too, that be did not wish to be asked any questions on the subject. Cross knew officer Jenkins and spoke familiarly to him. The Marshal then drove the prisoner to his house, where he pro vided him with necessary clothing to make a decent appearance in, and they then started torte Baltimoredepot, the Deputy accompanying them. On the way down the Marshal left them a moment to go to the Post Office, when Cross inquired with much concern if the Deputy wasgoi9g along, saying there was no necessity for it. He was particular to ask, also, if "he had been pardoned. When the train was near Chester, Cross was anxious to get out, as 'he said, for something to eat, but the Marshal refused. At Baltimore they par took of refreshments, but did not remain long. They arrived in Washington in the afternoon, and Cross was taken directly to the office of the Secretary of War. The Assistant Secretary was not there, and Mr. Stanton was summoned. The Marshal had telegraphed to the Secretary that he would have Cross at his office in the after noon, and Mr. Stanton had not retired. Upon entering, the Marshal introduced the Deputy, and then informed the Secre tary that he had brought Cross. Mr. Stan ton manifested some surprise when the Marshal spoke of Cross, and asked an ex planation. The Marshal replied, " I was directed, by a letter from Mr. Watson, to bring him here, and I understood it to be by your order." "Not by my order, I as sure you, " said Mr. Stanton. The arshal then handed the letter of the Assistant, which the Secretary ran over With evident astoniehment.. "I knew noth ing about it," he said, "and what is more, it does not meet my approbation. Ido not want to use such a man as Cross tor any purpose." A messenger was then die patched for Mr. Watson, who, upon com ing in and examining the letter *entran ced it a forgery. During all this time Cross Seemed to be the least concerned . person' hi the room. After a short .cotendtation between the Secretaryof War.and the Mar shal, the Military Governor of Washington Was sent for, andhe. had Cross taken to the quard House for safe keeping by a file of soldiers. The next day Marshal Millward and Dep. ay Jenkins took Cross to Philadelphia, and returned him to his old quarters, in the Penitentiary. On the way up, in conver sation with the Deputy, he adniitted that two of his friends were on the. train in which they went to Baltimore, and intima ted that but for his presence- an. escape Would have been attempted. When re turned to the Penitentiary, he deniedthe right of the Warden. to detain him, :and demanded in the most bold and confident manner his release, as had been, done to Secretary Stanton, in the War.:offioe. PITTSBURGH, TUESDAY .MORNING, JUNE 10, 1862. The forged letter which purported to come from the Secretary of War, and received by Marshal Millward, was as follows: WAR DEPARTMENT, Washington City, June Ist, 1862. I Wm.llward, ssq. , United States Mar shal, Philadelphia, Pa.: Sia—TheSecretary . of War directs me to advise you of therectupt of a dispatch from the Headquarters of the Army to this De partment, with an urgent request that an effort be made to send to that point the somewhat notorious forger, J. Buchanan Cross, now an inmate of your State Prison —.alto instruct you to proceed to Har risburg, for the purpose of making a per sonal application to the Executive for his release, and -to bring him on to this city with the least possible delay. Yon will please communicate the con tents of this note to United States District Attorney Coffey, Collector Thomas and Postmaster Walborn and request them to append their names with your own to the petition enclosed, which, with , a copy of record of sentence, it is presumed will be sufficient, as this Department has address ed a note to Governor Curtin requesting his favorable consideration of the same. Cross is to be sent over the lines for a specific purpose with a telegraph operator, now in waiting at Headquarters, and as the service will be attended with much personal peril, the Secretary of War is anxious that no publicity be given to the fact that the application for his release emanates from this Department, the knowledge of which, in case of accident, would be fatal to him and defeat the pur poses of his mission—you will, therefore, observe at a glance the propriety of avoid ing any explanations whatever to the local authorities and prison officials, or even to Cross himself, until he reaches this point. Your prompt attention will be duly rec ognized by this Department. Very respectfully, Your obedient servant, P. H. WATSON, Assistant Secretary of War. On the receipt of this letter the Marshal telegraphed as follows • JUNE 2d, 1862. To Hon. A. G. Curtin, Governor of Penn sylvania: Will you be at Harrisburg to-morrow morning. Important business. WILLIAM MILL WA HD, United States Marshal. The following reply was received by telegraph from Harrisburg, showing that the Governor had also been humbugged by a letter purporting to come from Weill ington : HARRISBURG, June 2d. 1862. To Wie. Milltoard, L: .S. Marshal: Come up and your business will be ad justed to your satisfaction. Bring with you the record of the conviction. M. S. QUAY, Private Secretary. After visiting Harrisburg and procuring the pardon the Marshal telegraphed to the War Department as follows: TUESDAY MORNING, 16 O'CLOCK, 1 HARRISBURG, June 3. f To Hon. E. M. Stanton, , Secretary of War, IVashington : Have succeeded in obtaining what I came here for. I will have him at your De partment to-morrow evening, at 6 o'clock. WM. MILLWARD, United States Marshal. The Missourian says: Captain John R. Clark, of company 11, Fifth Kansas Cavalry, was officer of the day at that post. About dark lie, in com pany with one A. J. Rice—both in a state of intoxication—called at the house of Mrs. Willis, a widow lady, residing in the east part of town, to get their supper, which Mrs. Willis declined preparing for them. This denial enraged the captaiu and his companion, who drew their pis tols on the guards stationed at the door to protect the house, and attempted to force their way into the house to have their supper in spite of the denial. One of the guards shot the captain through the body, when the latter retired a few paces and fell dead. About the same time the guard shot, Rice fired his pistol at him, but missed and shot Miss 'Wary Willis, a young lady, through the head, killing her instantly. Another guard fired at Rice, the ball entering his breast andranging upthrough his shoulder, which was badly shattered. He is severely wounded, and his recovery is doubtful. Mrs. S illis is a Union refugee from Ar kansas, where she lost two sons, assassin ated by rebel guerillas.
