The County Commissioners, in pursu
ance of the recommendation of the Con
vention of Sub-Committees, have levied a
tax of two mills on theltiollar of the
County valuation, for the support of the
families of volunteers. As we stated yes
terday the amount required until this time
next year will be nearly $lOO,OOO, but we
are unable to see how the sum will he made
up, as the tax levied will not. realize more
than $50,000.

the beginhing tirthe few remarks
we have to tnake - inc•reply.to nn article in
the Gazette of yesterday we wish to reiter
ate what we' said on Viesday. viz '• The
Post is neitker the advocate nor the organ
lof Mayor Sawyer." Rut we claim and
will exercise the right of commending or
condemning, at. all times, the action of the
public servants, according as we consider
tlosin right or wrong.
It must also be remembered that while
we fully approve of the suppression, in
newspapers which are read in the families
of our citizens, of disgusting detail; of
crime, we take no part in a personal quar
rels
between the reporters of the press and
the Mayor, however much the thrmer may
fa-el aggrieved at the refusal of the latter
to give theta the details of a particular
ease. which i notwithstanding the insimin
tion of the Gazate to the contrary) has
'Well the real cause of all the recent sour
rilous attach.; upon the Mayor and his
police. We bold that. no person having
control of ink and types has the right to
impose upon the 'millio by dragging before
them his personal quarreN—much less to
attack any one. in his private or official
capacity. by reason of a private pique.
If ho hat a difference with any one let
him do as other individuals not connected
with the press—viz : keep away front the
offending party and avoid all personal in
, til-our:4. with him.
Hut our reportorial friends have chosen
to !Jet differently. They first ventilate the
cause of their displeasure to the Mayor and
then pursu e u SySt enlet le course of abuse
of that ram:Liu:airy and his officers, show
ing c;early that t hey were but venting
their spleen tbr what they considered a
personal indignity by making exposures
which never would have reached the pub
lie eye hail they remained on good terms
with the Mayor. This may seem to be a
harsh assertio n . lint it is true, as the repor
ters know. It was unfortunate for the
Mayor that be quarreled with these gentle-
men, but equally :•ta for them, as it has
wily resulted in an exposure of the true
cause of their malignity. yii : the refusal
of the Mayor to furnish them with such
"items . ' as he secs lit to suppress.
We have no fears that the position of
the Ns/ on this matter will be misrepre
sented. (fur readers know that during the
time aif the present proprietorship, we
have cat...fully abstained from offending the
public morality by giving. in our local col
umns, filthy di-I:tits of any case, either he
fore the Mayor or in Court, and we are
pleased to say that this course has met the
approval of the public, who do not desire
to have :heir familics made familiar with
ooh thihgs throt:gh the medium of the
',Odic paints. We . have felt a eOnSelen
timis to 4.1,, al,- the standard of news•
paper morality in this respect, and have,
fio- a, our awn ca,v is rOacerned, sue•
t•ct•dod. it With. therefore, with no regret
that We saw other papers. which had been,
v heticttr the a wcaasiott offered, feeding the
public on this di, iv pabulum, forced by the
action of ties diler ningist rate of the city to
the adoption of aa course we had long rillee
taktm from choice. W e hoped .that the
wi,hed for rch,rai at uid 1,,c,0ne general,
but rt L: t et to say that wa• ln,refteen dis
appointed—duo the policy of the Mayor
has only called out items of a mon+ dis
gusting and disgraceful character than be
fore. In such a eamtest public decency
must staffer and we only trust that it may
be speedily settled upon some basis rlru
will e xclude, as in the leading journals
East ami West, indiscriminate policc re•
ports. which in almost every instance wuttati
the feelings of innocent friends and ray, ly
hate much effect in furthering the van=e of
public justice or contributing to piddle
L•t conclusion we may say that, though
not pretending, as a Democratic organ, to
the high-toned morality of the Gazette, we
are not only astonished but shocked at
finding that respectable religious sheet, so
righteous that it for a long time persistent
ly refused to advertise or notice the ThPa
tr., and other places of profane ionise•
went, so strenuously opposing the Mayor
chosen by its own party I but for whose
politics we care nothing) in inaugurating a
policy which would only add to the high
character for decency which it claims.

*smother Sanitary Committer
fur Virginia.
On the 16th day of May a meeting of
citizens was held, which authorized our
Sanitary Commission to appoint a Com
mittee to visit the Pennsylvania soldiers
now in Virginia who are Stlfiringfrom dis
sease or wounds, and render then, as com
fortable as possible. In accordance with
their instructions the Sanitary Commission
designated Capt. C. R' • Batchelor, James
1.. Graham. B. Preston and 0. 0.
Esqs.. for thaPservice and they visited the
armies, giving aid and comfort to the sick
anti Willnalolidifa, wherever found.—
Captain Batchelor and Mr. Graham. ti,el
ing ill. cane• home and at last accounts the
rest or the coMnlitteO had also started,
Ind it is presumed that on hearing of the
battle near Richmond they went band; to
carry out the objects of their mission.
The Sanitary Commission, halving no
positive knowledge of the whereabouts of
the first. Committee, held a meeting yester
day morning and appointed a second Com
mittee to proceed at once to White
Vu., and minister to the sick and wounded,
The Committee named consists of D. I'.
Lowary, A. T. Douthett and vino. M. Ir
win. Esqs., who left last. evening, by the
half past eight o'clock train on the Penn
sylvania Railroad, on their errand of mer
cy.
In accordance with the instructions of
the Commission, the President, Thomas
Bakewell, Esq., telegraphed to Gov. Cur
tin, offering the services of five surgeons,
to go, without compenZation, to the relief
of the sick and wounded in Virginia. The
Governor replied that he had referred the
offer to Surgeon General Smith, who is
expected to arrive in Philadelphia to day.
In this connection we wish to urge upon
the Ward Committees the necessity of itur,
rying up their collections. There are many .
Pittsburghers now before Richmond sadly
in need of aid, which their fellow-citizens
should not be slow to furnish. Let the
Committees go to work at once—to-day—
and they can soon procure enough funds
to enable the Sanitary Commission to
provide for the wants of.all our sick and
wounded
