The Battle of Hanover Court
House.
We gather the first details ofthe fight at
Hanover Court House, between General
Morreli's divfsion, attached to Gen. Fitz
John Porter's corps, and a body of the
rebels, from a correspondent of the New
York 11% , th1. We have only space for two
extracts, showing what was done by the
the Pennsylvania regiments. the 83d and
After describing the surprise the letter
Writer says
—The guns captured were 12 pound
smooth bore brass howitzers,. belonging to
Latham's celebrated New Orleans battery,
and they were left in good order. The lim
her-boxes were nearly fall ammunition,
though one of them had been blown up by
a shell from Griffin during the first of the
engagement. The charge of the Seven
teenth New York upon these guns was
very handsomely done. The superior drill
of the regiment was manifest in the solid
and regular front which they preserved in.
moving forward. The officers behaved
with coolness and unflinching valor. Ma
jor Bartram and Lieutenant Colonel Mor
ris, though both confined to their tents for
days previously, were in their sad
dles, and with Colonel McLane and Lieut.
Col. Vincent, of the Eighty-third Pennsyl
vania,
stignalized their bravery by the cap
ture of num erous single-handed. General
Butterfield vein plltnented Col. Lansing very
highly on his achievement."
The attack in the rear is then described
and theu conies the following paragraph :
••While this hot fight was going on, the
brigades which were in the advance were
returning on the double quick. They form
ed in line in the wheat field near where the
first engagement took place, then pressed
thrin Lz h the wood, vigorously, and were
soon face to thee ith the enemy, who wore
ei id,n;ly startled by the appearance of so
stronv, a reintlar,!,,inent. Butterfield threw
the Eigh:y-third Pennsylvania and Six
teenth Mitdaigan in int the left. McQuade
sent the Sixty-second Pennsylvania, Col.
Black, in the timber on the extreme right,
deployed mainly as skirmishers„ and ad
vancing rapidly: also the Ninth Massachu
s,its. Col. CH*. On the left of the Eighty
third. The Fourteenth New York having
relieved the Second Maine, was joined by
the Thirteenth Ne w' York. from Coionel
Wa-ren's brigade, on our left mupported

his left and the oilier regiments in front

retreat, under the cover of the dense forest
in his rear.

the three noble bands who so long held
the enemy in check without abating an
iota of their foothold ; and great praise
to the vigorous and timely efforts of the
brave regiments of Col's. Butterfield and
eQuade, who drove from the ground a
force superior to the whole of ours engaged
at any one time. Butterfield'sefforts, from
first to last. were productive of the very
best results."
In this action six hundred prisoners were
taken and Gen. Stoneman captured a rail

The hope he had entertained of reaping

We might. prolong our narrative of what
took place this Christmas eve, but to what
good purpose ?—ru i bone? The miraculous
change which had come over the miser was
duly appreciated by Carl Heine and his be
trothed, who, on the strength of some mu
nificent checks presented to them by Hein
rich Otterbein, were able to set up a suit
able establishment of their own while
Herr Wilhelm appeared on the Borse—
the little incidents vaguely alluded to hav
ing reached no farther than the room in
which they had been broached—and be
came a really prosperous man.
The old usurer resolutely abandoned the
vicious habit of charging sixty, eighty and
a hundred per cent for accommodations,
and app eared never so pleased or proud as
when fondling his grandchildren, which
it was his good fortune to do in the due
course of time. He became a younger and
a heartier man, and lives to tell his own
tale, and point its moral, whieb he does
with'gennine unction and glee.
