MONDAY MORNING,..II:NE
NEWS FROM THE SOUTH
New Orleank papers of the 13th inst.
have been received at St. Louis. from
which the annexed extracts are taken :
Traitors Arrested.
From the New Orleans Delta, Jley 13
We learn that W. B. Munford, who i:;
charged with being conspicuous as the
leader of the party that., before the arrival
of General Butler, tore down the federal
tlag Which was hoisted over the Mint by the
the forces under Capt, Faragut, was yester
day- trrested by the ITnited States authori
ties.;
We" understandthat the authorities of
the Cnited States on Saturdy arrested
Mr. Esnard, who was formerly a clerk of
Mr. A. J. Gnirot, an officer of the Mint.
together with the books of Mr. G., and
on yesterday they arrested Mr. Bernard
Avegno, one of Mr. Gnirot's securities on
his bond to the United States.
New Military:Commander Ap
petaled.
Front the New Orleans Lelia, May I
Acting Brigadier General Geo. T. Shep
ley, Colonel of the Twelfth regiment of
Maine Volunteers.. has been appointed by
General Butler Military commandant of
New Orleans. We are indebted to the Ph:-
ayuue for the inforMation that Gen. But
ler will make his Headquarters on the:sea
coast. Col. Shepley isa son ofJudge Shep
ley, formerly Judge of the Supreme Court
of Maine. and once a Senator from that.
State. The Colonel has been a prominent
National Democratic politician in times past
and was the special' friend, adviserand host
of Jetlrson Davis when he made a trip to
New England some few years ago.
From the New °denim Bee, May 1
A change has taken place in the milita
ry government of our city. General But
ler. in a special notice, marked No. 21 of
general orders, announces the appointment
of Acting Brigadier General Geo. T. Shep
ley. Colonel of the Twelfth regiment of
Maine volunteers, as military commandant
of New Orleans. It is rumored that Gen.
Butler contemplates establishing his head
quarters at some point - aeross the lake. A
residence at any of the watering places
would be far more agreeable than exposure
to the heat, dust and uncleanliness of New
Orleans during the perilous months of
summer.
Death of a Rebel Naval Officer.
The New Orleans DeJ4a announces the
death of Captain T. B. Hager, Confeder-
States Nary. He was commander of the
steamer Mc Rea, and was wounded in the
battle of Fort Jackson.
Cotton Barking.
Frain the New °demo True Delta, 1
The cotton in COneliiditi parish has been
entirely destroyed. In Tensas parish the
burning is going on.
Condition ofthe Mississippi
River.
Irma the Sew Orlewam Bee, May V.
The Mississippi is extraordinary high,
broken through the levee in varionut places
both above and below. We have not heard
whether the crev'esci in the parish of Ker
ville has been closed. Thatat Story's plan
tation, in Plaquentaine, is st opped; but an
other has taken place on the right bank et
the river, in the same perish. We antici
pate, however, a speedy fall in the preten
sions of the •'Father of Waters:*
