The Capture of Colonel - Murphy
A. son of Colonel Murphy, of the 29th
regiment, who reached Philadelphia from
Hagerstown on Thursday afternoon, states
that his father. was taken prisoner near
Winchester, on the Middletown turnpike,
after a desperate struggle, breaking his
sword over the, head of one of the rebels.
They rushed at him with their bayonets,
when he said, "Keep off, you infernal
scoundrels," and at the same time making
lash nt them. succeeded in knocking
three or four down beihri , lu•

Leather. Itching. ate.
It is with much pleasure we direct the
attention of our reader= to the advertise
ment of M. Delenge, No. 243 Liberty
stmet,in another column. The establish.
ment is among the oldest - in the city and
its head is a gentleman well known for
business ability and strict intezrity in all
his dealings. Ile is an extensive . dealer
in hide's, oil and leather, india rubber ma
chine belting and steam peeking, leather
belting, &c. The - vulcanized rubber belt
iog is smooth, always runs straight, is not
affected by cold nor by 300 degrees of heat
and can be run in all weather and any
locality. The gum peeking, made under
Goodyear's patent, is very elastic• and has
'route into very general use among engi
neers and machinists who wish tight joints.
The leather belting, though more expen
:sive, is also more durable than the rubber.
It is of superior quality, manufsetnred by
:Hoyt Bros., - New York city, from slaugh
ter hides especially seleeted and tanned
whole and is furnished at manulitetnrers'
price. Double, single and hemlock bands
are also furnished. The belting is of any
size, from one inch to two ftpt broad.
M. Delange also keeps on hand a full
s:ock of lace leather, helt hooks, rivets,
gum gaskets, &c., and is prepared to sup
ply the trade with his goods on fair terms.
We hope our readers interested will call

Jamestown and Franklin Rail
The subscription books for this improve
ment were opened at Brown's Mills, Mer
cer county, last week and sufficient stock
was taken to secure a charter. The
Venengo Spectator is very jubilant over
the prospect of a connection with
this city by• this road via the Pitts
burgh and Erie Railroad and through New
Castle. The Spectator says: ”We believe
the proposed road is in the hands of men
of energyand capacity, and that all that
is needed to secure its speedy completion
is the cordial co-operation of the commu
nity. With such co-operation it can be
placed in running order within 10 miles of
Franklin this season, and would earn
enough during the winter to grade the road
to Franklin. The work will be commenced
at .Tsunestown and continued towards this
boro.lgh. In this way, every mile of road
will be available as soon as completed."
Peep 0' Day.
On Saturday we gave a synopsis of the
great moms of this season, at Laura
Keene's New York Theatre, viz : the new
Irish iiramaof "The Mitcarthy or Peep 0'
Day." The piece will be presented for
the first time to-night at the Theatre with
entirely. new scenery and effects upon
_which Manager Henderson has spared no
expense, while the fact that it has been
an entire .week in rehersal promises that
4,t will be well played. Mrs. J. H. Allen
,and herhusband, both from Laura Keene's
Theatre, will appear in the leading parts.
'The piece is full of incidents and striking
;situations and some of the scenic effects
ism really wonderful. We think it will
prove a success; and hope to see the man
,Neament amply remunerated in this effort
to furnieh our citizens fresh attractions

Tornado in Bedford County.
On Wednesday last a severe rain storm,
accompanied by hail, thunder and light
ning, passed over Bedford county. In the
Western and Southwestern parts a violent
tornado prevailed, destroying much valu
able timber and seriously injuring the
growing grain. In some localities a lane
of about half a mile in width was cut
through the timber, the trees and bushes
being leveled with the ground. On. Dry
Ridge, the grain is represented to have
been shorn off as with a scythe.

skirmish in which a great number of men
prf , Pni no each ride. and as pro
dial reasons forbid my giving either the
positions or numbers of the troops, it can
but he described-in indefinite terms.
We are all in camp together—sitting
about doing nothing—the officers in their
marquees, the men in their tents. A
countryman rides swiftly along the road
leading from otqposts to headquarters. In
an instant be is dismounted, enters the
general's tent, is out main, vaults into the
saddle, and away he gallops along the road
hi, came. An aid runs from the tent to
the different regimental headquarters:
"Be ready to march in five minutes—light
marching order." A few seconds more
and the whole whole camp is aroused—
the greatest liatnessness is changed to the
greatest activity. Cheering and yelling at
the prospect of a brush with the enemy,
each man seizes his gun, hastily examines
it to find if it is in perfect order, puts on
his cartridge box, canteen and haversack,
places himself in line, and is ready for
marching. Then the regiment is drawn
into line, and all stand with tree military
stoicism awaiting the order which• shall
send them to confront the enemy.
But foot soldiers are too slow for news
paper men, and, hastily picking up some
friends, away we go, across field and fence,
through mud and swamp, bound for the
scene of action. A threatening storm,
whose distant thunder had been mutter
ing for an hour, warns us of its approach
by a few large drops scattered over the
ground. We stop an instant, put on our
water-proofs, start again; and, urging our
horses to their utmost speed, plunge
through the rain. 11 e rush past sentry,
vidette, and signal man, unheeding any
challenges they might give. Shoulder
straps and head-quarter passes are our
passports through what would otherwise
lie great difficulties. Au hour's ride brings
us to the outposts, and when we rein in
our panting horses we find the storm
'passed over, its clouds hanging like a black
pall behind us. A regiment of troops
stands in a road. in marching order. lin
the right, three black, dangerous Parrott
guns, ready loaded, each with gunner
holding lock-strings, are pointed at a pass
some five hundred yards in advance, where
the road enters a wood. Ou the left, some
thirty yards from the road, is an old Vir
ginia manor house, recently deserted by
its owners, and having some curly-headed
negroes, half frightened, half pleased,
poking their heads out of the doors and
windows. In the front yard, two brass
twelve-pounders stand pointed at the same
pars as their three black looking brethren
on the right—each one ready to belch forth
fire and smoke at an enemy. Cavalry are
drawn up in order behind the caimon.—
Officers stand about, and, though all seems
prepared for a most fearful fight, laughter
and conversation proceed the same as if'
no danger were near.
Directly au aid come, galloping along the
road from the advance beyond the wood,
whispers a word in the ear of the command
ing officer, and then, receiving an order,
swiftly returns to the place whence he
came. A moment more the cannon are
limbered up, and, the infantry and cavalry
protecting them, they all march off to take
a position in the advance. We follow,
many passing through the troops and get •
ting in the front. The infantry take a new
position in the road, beyond the wood,
sending out skirmishers in force to the
right. The cannon are rapidly wheeled
into a road to the left, turned into'a field,
unlimbered, and accurately aimed at a hill
and wood where the enemy had made their
appearance. We took our stand with the
battery, and from there could see a wide
expanse of country. The wood command
ed by the artillery seemed a mile distant.
A cavalry vidette of four horsemen were a
few feet to the left of us. Each man was
mounted, and all eyes were bent on the
wood. Directly a detachment of infantry
march up the hilt, stop at the entrance of
the wood, fire some volleys into it, and
then enter and disappear among the trees.
We wait minute after minute in breathless
suspense, but they do not appear, nor do
we hear answering shots from, the enemy.
Save an occasional remark from our own
men, all is still as death. The birds are'
singing and insects chirping—two or three
cows are quietly grazing to front of us— ,
away in the distance, over the ridges. we
can see a fringe of woods hearing away to
the left, but not a human being is in sight.
No one can truly describe his feelings on "I
such an occasion. The enemy he 'knows
to be near him, but he cannot see them.—
His own friends in the Union army may be
killed or wounded beyond the wood, yet
he knows it not. Not more than fifty men
and a few field pieces are around him. On
the road to the right theregiment is resting
on its arms. His bosom heaves and swells
at what. lie imagines to be passing. He
wishes to be in the thickest fight, yet knows
not how to get there. Weapons he may
bear on his shoulder or at his side, yet
burning as he is with zeal to use them, no
object is presented on which to wreak his
vengeance or shoW his courage.
A. first view of battle is a grand sight,
and he who sees that great engagement,
