to Art of Glossing Linens.
The mystery of giving to linen collars
and shirt bosoms a gloss like that on new
linen is thus explained by an exchange :
"This gloss, or enamel as it is sometime s
called, is produced mainly by friction with
a Warm iron, and may be put pn linen by
almost any person. The linen to be glazed
receives as much strong starch as it IS
possible to charge it with: then it is dried.
To eisuelt . pound'of starch a piece of sperm.
paraffine, or white wax, about the - size of a
walnut, i s'nsually added. ''hen ready to
be ironed,: the linen is laid upon the table
and)Skointened very slightly on the surface
withii.elean wet cloth. It is then ironed
in thernmal.way with a flat iron. and is
ready "fortheglossing operation. For this
purpose a peculiar heavy flat-iron, rounded
lathe bottom and polished as bright as a
mirror, - iiised. It is pressed firmly upon
the linenand rubbed with much fume, and
this frictional action puts on the gloss.-
"Elbow grease" is the principal secret
connected with the art of glossing linen.'

with an increasing twist; it has a false muz

the ball is made of compressed lead; and
the weapon is fitted with a itelescope of

DR. B. DRANDRRTIP—/liar : I was suf
fering for many years from hereditary hemorrhoi
dal affections, of which I had the first attack in
laki. Since that time I was vgularly visited with
such complaints every spring. I felt in the morn
ing a most severe pain in the back, as if the lower
oints of the spine were broken or bruind, and an
asthmatic pressure on the chest, Owing to my oc
cupation which keeps me all day busy out of
doors. and entirely distrusting any so called "regu
lar treatment" that would' have confined me to
my house, I. thought of following a Phut of my
own, which might cure me without the ificonveni
ewe to my business attending the treatment of
a "regular practitioner." So I put an Alkock's
Plaster right over the groin, renewing it every
fortnight; every Saturday night I took a dose of
Brandreth's Pills, three or four, as I thought neon.
'airy to a dose, which operated on me after getting
up, three to five times in the forenoon; on San
day, Tuesday and Thunder nights I took one Lite
Addition Pill, which produced one large evacua
tion. I pursued this course for six weeks. and
could attend to my business without interruption;
I worked, ate and drank lasi was wont. slept meet
soundly and awaked every day widaleaspaM . and
now I know nothingof thecomplaint at all, '&64
I feel obliged to make you this statement for

may benefit many as it has done me.
