From the Albany Evening Journal.
THE r, April
We reached this quiet. neat, quaint, old
city, one of the eapituk--- t/ie capital, in
deed—of Holland, by rail, in an hour and
a half from Harlapm, %1 here u•e lodged last
night. The i.ountry the ,anio

able city passed was Leyden, distinguished
its University. Like all the other ci
i
ties of Holland, it is upon a dead level.
The Hague is evidently the diplomatic
political and social etintre of Holland. as
it is essentially the court centre, although
• the royal family reside much of the time
in other parts of their realni, as at present, 1
the King being at Utrecht and the Queen
in Paris.
Our first visit was to the Museum,
which, besides some good pictures (first
among which is Paul Potter's bull/ exhib
its the finest collection of Japanese curios
ities in the world. Potter's Bull, among
other great pictures, went to Paris along
with the rich spoils of art, in the time of,
Napoleon I; but Holland, after the peace,
offered so large a ransom that it was sold
to the city in which the painter was born.
Front the Museum we drove through a
magnificent beech forest to the King's pal
ace. The exterior was anything but
pressive, and as I was smoking a good
Havana I remained in the carriage, asking
Mr. Dayton and H—t to do the honors
of the palace. But a message soon sum
moned me from my repose, and the result
proved that, left to myself, indolence
would have punished itself. The palace,
though small, is a gent. Nothing I had
seen--and this, remember, includes Wind
sor, Buckingham, Versailles. the Tuileries.'
and the palaces of Austria, Saxony, Prus- '
sia, Naples, 4 - c., &c.—equals, in richness,
beauty, and taste, this palace of the King
of Holland. or, perhaps, I would say the
Queen, for I under-tand that the King
generally occupies another palace. The
Queen is now in Paris. on a visit to the
Empress, and we were shown entirely
through the apartments. The first is the
"Chinese Room." entirely furnished and
embellished with articles from China. I
The next is the "Japanese Room." fur
!fished and embellished by the produc
tions of that country. Then came the
"orange Room," a large circular apart
ment. extending to the roof of the palace.
and lighted by a dome, covered from floor
to dome withAhe frescoes of Renbens and
his pupils. "Se Queen's sitting room is
furmshed with exquisite taste, and con
tains four beautiful pionre:, including a
Murillo.
We drove back to dinner at five o'clock.
At the table d'hote, Holland's dignitaries
and literati talked Dutch in its purity, and
with much animation.
The Hague, like other Dutch cities, was
long since finished. This is so literary.
There is no employment here for the arch
itect, the carpenter, or the mason. Their
work was done, as the iron numerals on
the buildings show, a century, a century
and a half, or two centuries ago. And the
city is still and noiseless as the smallest
hamlet. Here, as elsewhere in Holland
everything -is as neat as a pin."
---
From New Orleans.
A correspondent writes that Lafayette
Square, their ectinpu Harting—like to our
Washington Parade ground---the scene of
their Sabhath gala days, where their green
and gold and grim soldiers, postured in
all sorts of attitudes of fence and defense,
and manipulated muskets in all styles of
gracefulness, is now occupied by the Union
troops, their clothes of somber blue, their
faces of Northern blonde. Jackson Square
I I
is similarly occupied. This is one of the
most venerable nooks in the town. Here
stands the old French Cathedral, the City
Prison and Court. House, each and all lia
ble on any shifting of. the municipal or
popular mind to have hot-shot richochet
ing down its brick plaza.
The grass is growing up through the
chinks in the wharf planks, like the inci
pient shade trees in Buchanan's nursery
at Astoria just as straight and regular,
the rows about a foot apart. It makes the
miles of levee like what it, will be the day
after the resurrection. The streets are
very dirty, and in some there is a good
crop of oats where no grinding cart. wheel
has been for a year to nip the delicate
herbage that dodges into existence.
The American flag waves,
H since the first
of May, over the Custom ouse, banks, j
hotels, Mint, and other of the beet-root
red structures, laughing in glad ripples as
a sluggish Louisiana wind shakes its poten
tial silk. Everything is hot, hotter, hot
test. A few black'ships of war and blase "
transports air their indolent sails, the only
sentinels along the miles of deserted levee
now roasting under a locust heat.
New Orleans is at present in a state of
municipal orphanage. General Butler is
sued his index expnigatorius, jhich has
caused considerable fluttering among the
newspapers. He shut two of them up,
and next day, on the proprietors suing
for pardon, they were permitted to open
their doors.

THE GREAT EXHIBITION BUILD
ING OF H.;'2.
For the Exhibition of l il2, now just
opened. the English have erected a
palacc which far eclipses anything of the
Lind ever attempted before. They have
raised an edifice destined for all present
and (Mitre exhibitions. which will at
the same time he a monunirnt (if their

The building of the pres, int es
differs in many essentia, par :rem
its predecessor. The latter was mrt,ie t 1
tirely of iron and glass ; the forme r
structed of brick, wood, iron and glad :
the one was a temporary edifice-Ih, ,
other is to be a permanent one. The first
covered twenty-three acres--the. present
covers more than twenty-six. The floor
ing si?ftee in 1851 was just short of a mil
lion feet ; in 1862 it will be a million and
a half. The greatest height in 1851 was
160 feet, and the main nave running from
end to end was 60 feet high by 72 wide.
The greatest height of the present build
ingis 260 feet, and the nave is 1200 feet
long by 85 wide, and 100 feet high. The
total length of the first exhibition build
ing was 1800 feet, by 400 wide. The di
mensions of the present are 1200 rem long
by 700 broad, exclusive of the space set
aside for the display of agricultural im
plements, which as, in rough numbers,
1.000 feet long . by 220 broad. The con
tractor's price in 1t451 was S'tOit,Olgt in
1862 it is $1,000,000, though in reality it
will cost 81.500.000; but the ext ra
WO is conditional on the gross profits ex
ceeding $2,5110,000, as they did in 1 . ,51.
The ground on which the Exhibition
stands is the property of the Commission
ers of 1851. and was purchased by them
out of the proceeds of that Exhibition.
The former building stood en the smith
side of Hyde Park, near the Kensington
entrance. The present one stands in
front of the new grounds of the Horticul
tural Society. at Kensington, and bet v, e , e ,
the Cromwell road and Prince Albert
road. The main entrance will be on a
new road recently opened for the purpose,
and named Exhibition road. ten this
side it presents a lofty recess facade, from
the centre of which rises a superb dome
of glass and iron to the height of 2- - i0 tint,
with the base of the dome no less than
160 feet in diameter. A similar dome
rises at the other end of the building.
These two domes are the largest ever
built : for that of St. Peter's, at flows, is
only 120 feet in diameter : that of St.
Paul's, at London, is 108 feet in diame
ter. These are reared over the intersec
tion of the nave and transepts at right ;u
-gh .:, and as the floors beneath both are el
evated above the floors ofthe rest of the
bnilding, an unequalled view i. obtained
through alm o st every part of the vast in
terior. The pricipal nave runs from the
entrance in Exhibitio n load t o the ex t rem,
end of the building in tint grounds of the
Horticultural Society, a length .if 120116 , 0 t,
or nearly a quarter mile.
The transepts, in which the naves termi
nate at either end, are each 700 feet long by
Sp feet wade and 100 feet high. The roofs
are of wand, coated with felt, and meeting
in the centre at an tingle, like HO. roof .
Westminster Hall. but the girder- :ilea; li
ill and groined. The method iif
the building is .-nt irely different from Hisof 1 rig t
and has given rirr to niany coin
plaints, especially from th.• exhibitors
paintings, Jewelry and article: requiring ft
Strong: light to show 6.rth their qualiites.
The English papers have teemed with let
ters on this subjeet, but no satisfactory
conclusion will LC arrived at until the ex
periment is tried. The lightin g id the i•x.
hibition of 1851 caused the despair of the
Conunissioners : for when the weather was
fine all the screens that could be u+-t1
were insufficient to keep down the glare of
the' sunt while on wet days all the care of
the plumber could not prevent the rain
front dripping in. In Ow present edifice
the wooden roof does away with both dit ,
ticulties, for it renders the building, dark,
the principal light being derived from the
domes : but as that extends only over the
area immediately beneath them, a cleres
tory has been carried along the side walk
beneath the roof of all the naves and tran
septs, twenty-live feet high, of glass and
iron. The building faces east and west,
so that the glare of the sun at noon is
avoided. The columns to carry the gal
leries are double, 22 feet apart, and 22
feet high between each gallery : they are
carried up to the clerestory. Each of the
main entrances beneath the dome is 60
feet high by 50 wide, with two smaller
perches at either, 90 feet by 15 feet. In
addition to these there are three entrances
on each side of the building facing the
Cromwell and Prince Albert roads, each
of which is 56 feet high by 22 wide.
