The Battle of Williamsburg. • Saturday's Hcra/d contains a detailed account of the battle of Williamsburg, occupying, with. a:large map and a full list of the killed and wound, fifteen col qinns, of that paper. We have only r m for a few extracts. Disposition of General tliatorr Comm and. General Heintzelman. whon on the field in person, a little in the rear, had sent Gene* Emory forward with a small command, which was afterwards increased to four regiments of infantry—the Third Michigan, Col. Champlin ; Third Maine, Col. Staples; Fourth Maine, Col. Walker, and the Sixty-Third Pennsylvania, Col. Ilays—with Benson's Second Artillery, and two batteries from General Kearney's division, all accompanied by Col. Averill's Third Pennsylvania Cavalry. When Gen. Emory reached the front with the cavalry, he learned from General Hooker, who had immediate command, that the limited length of the line in that locality did not admit of an opportunity to bring his arm of the service into action at that time.— General Emory, however, was sent with some of the force around along the roads to the left and rear, to observe move ments of the enemy which the woods con cealed. In this regard Lieutenant McAlis ter, of the Engineer Corps, rendered valuable services. which were appreciated on the field, General Emory's command bad a little skirmishing around among the fallen timber to the left, and near an openingwithin view of one of the redoubts. A squadron of the cavalry took posses sion of the work, which was partly de serted, and captured seventy prison ers. la', character of the country and the small force under his command prevented General Emory making an effective demonstration in rear of the enemy. The Operationo on the Eight. In the meantime the operations had ex tended further to the right. Gen. Peck's command, of which I heve previously spoken, was brought into action late in the afternoon, near the point where the York• town road opens into the space in front. The One Hundred and Second Pennsylva nia regiment, Col. Rowley, was deployed to the right of the road. and the Fifty-fifth New York, Colonel de Trobriand, to the left. This was the time of the general movement along the whole line, and when the enemy was atiempting to carry off Capt. Weber's guns, the Fifty-fifth regi ment was dispatched to the left, with in structions to prevent that movement, but reached that spot too late to accomplish the intended object. However, those regiments and the Sixty-second Pennsyl vania, Colonel Riker, engaged the enemy in front till their ammunition was expend ed. The Ninety-third Pennsylvania, Col. McCarty, was thrown in front, and con tended with the rebels until they appeared in larger force to the right again, in front of Colonel Rowley's regiment. It waa now quite doubtful whether General Peck could hold his position. The Ninety-eighth Pennsylvania, Colonel Balliere, was or dered forward ; but some of the compa nies manifested symptoms of disorder, while the rebels were gaining ground ; but it was placed in position notwithstanding, and before night closed upon the conflict, the brigade had partially succeeded in driving back the enemy. The supply . of ammunition in the cartridge boxes having been expended, this brigade was relieved by other troops, which were placed under command of Gen. Devin on the right and Gen. Kelm on the left. The Charge. The rebels were now within some forty yards, and Gen. Hancock ordered an im• mediate advance of his entire line. This, it will be remembered, was composed of of the Fifth Wisconsin, Sixth and Seventh Maine, Thirty-third New York and Forty ninth Pennsylvania regiments—in all about two thousand five hundred men. These regiments went forward with alacrity, and, as they came close to the enemy, deliver ed a few volleys.- Then General Hancock, whose politeness is equal 'to his bravery, gavethe common d — " Gentlemen, charge!" And his gallant soldiers, witfi tremendous cheers, dashed down the slope. The en thusiastic spirit of, our men, seemed tp be sufficient to frighten the opposing force, which was said by prisoners to be General Early's brigade, and, with the exception of three resolute rebels,. who stood to re ceive the bayonets, the line broke, and the rebels ran. Pursuing them down the elope, Gen. Hancock's command haltecland fired ten or twelve rounds at thee, and *leo at another rebel force which was observed advancing to support the first. When the smoke cleared up the ground was thickly covered with dead and dying rebels. Coolness nag _llTnvery or Gen. Heintstlmsn. . . General Ifeintzlemart acted with cool ness and courage, when surrounded by danger, which attests anew his merits as an acComplialied sosidter. Not over pleas ing is his manners in general intercourse, except with those with whom be is inti mately acquainted, it is beautiful to see how his eye gleams with martial fire algid the .eguitaineat„.ol tiie field. Gen. Hooker opened. the Attack and succesiiful !l, held theground with his division against overwlelining numhers until the arrival of Gen: Keirnei's - ,troUpS lite in the ititer noon. lie was in immediate et)iiioand where the fighting way; during the greater portion of tbe day, and fought" the .rebel forces under Genetal Joseph E. itkinitton, the ablest ;lithe rebel . generals , 'with un questiotted energy and skull.
