Siekles having been ordered to're
aultte ooiwnand of his Brigade, visited the .
Soldiers' Rest, before leaving Washington
to join the army before Richmond, and
adOsteed his soldiers as follows :
".Sounens::---We have been separated
for feW weeks, and while I have grieved
' at the separation, I am elated to know
that yoshave fullyprovedyourselves to be
brave and terse soldiers. During this
Mparation you have sought honor and
glory on the battle-field, and have won it. I
I have been in this city seeking justice,
and.kkave obtained it. I am again your
Qemeral. I was not in the last fight, but
it WaSnot my fault. In the next, I hope
to lead you. But I have heard of you ;
have inquired anxiously for you; for every
regiment and company in the Excelsior
Brigade. - I was glad to hear of your ,
gallant conduct, and behavior, mid it will
be some recompense for the tiungers you
have Poked through, and the trials you
have endured, to know that your country
honors yon for yOur faithful pertbrinance
of duty. - What I say is applicabl e princi
pally to the men of my own brigade. But
giaiefinber that there were others •on
the well-fought battle-field of Williams
burg. If wasonly our advance—a few
thousand brave spirits—who would not,
sad could not, be defeated, who routed
the luperior rebel forces. Every one sings
the - Orgtukt of the braves who cotopiered at
Williantiburg. But lam proud of nay own
men: When we pledged ourselvesto e tch

edneiiiion bee thing was neglected, and
one Ottly;,that was to turn your back upon
the'totsr Standing at your tent doors, you
pledged yourselveti to stand by and follow
your officers' 'when faithfully led, and your
officers pledged themselves to lead you
bravely.
. j Both pledges have been redeem

service - were blotted out at Williamsburg,
but the-Excelsior Brigade has not been

grand old flag, and when you tight again
beneath its ample folds T trust I shall lead
You.!'

and forbidden 'to xeittee- . the . .beildiat a
Northern lady, pharigedtyith sympathizing
with treason. .Seireely credit this
statement, but if the person named.is re:
&Ilya Secessionist we should like to know
who she is, whether she is of Northern
birth; and - if so, does sun belong to the
city or is she merely a sojourner among
us ? If this story is correct we cannot
help thinking that the Committee haie
acted somewhat hastily—perhaps wrong
fully
accusing a defenceless female. as was'
done here not very long since in the case
of a . poor young actress, of whom naughty I I
stories were circulated. It is true that the
female referred to may have been over
zealous in her attentions to the rebel pris
oners
in the Hospital, but tie are at some
loss to know how her ministrations could
injure or affect any one here. We do not
desire to he set down as an apologist of
traitors, but merely as a human being,
with the common instincts of our race.
when we say that these two rebels, held
here as prisoners of war, were certainly
entitled to as much attention, care and
good treatment as any of our owl, soldiers,
and that if the lady in question chose, out
of pure womanly kindness, to devote her
self to those whose comfort may have been
neglected by others, it was entirely her own
affair, and, as her course could have little
or no influence in this loyal community
we do not think her actions (unless there
are circumstances of which we are not in
formed) merit as much attention as it is
said they have received. Who will pre
sume that if a suit of clothing had been"
sent to a Union soldier in the Hospital
complaint would have been made and the
donor expelled ? Yet common humanity
would dictate that all, friend and foe,
should he treated alike. Let us hear
whether any lady was expelled from the
Hospital and for what reason, as we are
constrained to believe that the Board have
not done this thing on so slight a cause.
Military Governor of Williams
burg.
By a private letter we learn that Colonel
David Campbell has been appointed mili
itary Governor of Williamsburg. Va.,
where his regiment, the Fifth Pennalyva
nia Cavalry, is now stationed. He has
appointed a captain in his regiment to the
post of Provost Marshal. Col. Campbell
will fill this position to the satisfaction of
the Government and the people of Wil
liamsburg, haring all the requisite intelli
gence and experience. He has establish
ed his headquarters at the College of Wil
liam and Mary, in Williamsburg, the most '
celebrated seat of learning in the South.
The letter says the battle ground exhib
its every evidence of a severe and hotly
contested conflict. Hundreds of newly
made graves are visible and there are three
large - hospitals, in which are some four
hundred sick and wounded soldiers, of
whom one half are rebels, wounded at
Williamsburg. Many of the patients have
suffered amputation. The insane asylum,
containing about three hundred patients,
has•been taken in charge by Col. Catepbell
and is furnished with subsistence by the
Quartermaster's Department.
New Goods.
When this caption is seen at the head of
a. newspaper article the presumption na
turally is that the ladies a-e to be ad-
dressed, it suggests the idea of "opening
I days" at dry goods stores (Ike says they
open every day,) but this is not the design
of this article. It is simply to state the
fact that Carnaghan, the merchant tailor
and clothier, Federal street, near the Diu•
mond, Allegheny City, is daily receiving
new goods, designed not for the fair. but
for the wear of the Lords of creation, both
great and small. Gentlemen who desire
a first class, well fitting suit of elothes, for ,
businesss or dress, which will be city made
and trimmed in the beet style. should not I
fail to call on Carnaghan.
Coroner's Inquest.
Coroner McClung yesterday morning
held an inquest upon the body of a Ger
man named Philip Kreis, who died on
Tuesday evening at the house of a dairy
man named Pebolt, residing in Shaler
t ':gwnship. Kreis had been employed by
Pe and was found in the stable about
five o'clock in the evening doubled over a
pile of .straw, and evidently suffering from
cram p. His limbs were drawn no and his
hands tightly compressed upon his stom
ach, in which condition he died in a few
minutes. The . deceased was a married
man, but had parted from his wife, who is
now in Cinciauati. He had his trunk and
papers at Anth'i beer hall, on Smithfield
street, in this city, and it is said that he
has about 5800 deposited here.
Personal.
Hon. Geo. W. Stein, State Senator from
Lehigh and Northast . pton counties, was in
the city yesterday. He left for the West
this morning, accompanied by Josiah Cole,
Esq., editor of the Correspondent and
Democrat," an influential paper published
in Easton.
E. M. Shields. Esq., of Cincinnati, Su
pervising Inspector of this District, also
arrived here yesterday.
