TIIESDit MORNING, MAY 20. air The first. steamboat on the Ohio river, says the Indianapolis Journal, was the Independence in 1814. It formerly had been: a large barge, that made several voyages from Cincinnati to New Orleans, consuming eight months in the downward and upward trip. A rudely constructed engine was put into it, and thus furnished and fitted up, the steamer Independence plowed the waters of the Ohio and Missis sippi rivers. Arriving at New Orleans, Gen. Jackson, commander of the Amer ican forces, pressed it into service against the British ; and, after the war, in 1815, she began her upward trip, and arrived, after a voyage of four months, at Rising Sun, where she stopped For wood. John James, proprietor of the town, furnished her with fence rails for fuel, and agreed to take his pay in a trip to Cincinnati. He embarked, but such was the slow speed of the steamer, that when he got to North Bend, lie left the boat and walked to Cin cinnati, arriving some twelve hours before the steamer. . 27,900 00 30,000 00 10,000 00 2,100 00 An Elephant in A Fix The monster elephant Hanibal, belong. ing to Van Amburgh & Co.'s Menagerie. came near losing his life, a few days since ; while travelling trom Key-port to Freehold, in New Jersey. His keeper had taker him off from the road in order to avoid an unsafe bridge, when, in crossing a tract of swampy land, the ground gave way be neath him and the enormous animal sank up to the middle of his sides in the yielding mud, where he floundered away for some time without being able to extricate him self; his struggles, on the contrary, result ing in rendering his situation, each mo ment, more dangerous, until it was feared that it would he impossible to save him. The heavy shackles with which he was fettered, preventing a free movement of his limbs, made his position still more critical until help arrived, when, by placing timbers in front of and around him, he was enabled, after a time, to extricate him self. At first, he was very much fright ened, trumpeting loudly, and struggling wildly, but attar the timbers were placed within his reach, he went to work more systematically; and exhibited much intel ligence in his subsequent operations, de pending principally upon his tusks to raise himself. When exhausted by his exer tions he would throw himself over upon one side in order to gain all the buoyancy possible until he became somewhat rested, when he would resume an upright posi tion and go manfully to work again. His ef forts were finally crowned with success, no less to his own satisfaction than that of his owners, to whom his loss would have been irreparable, as he it; much the largest elephant ever seen in this country. A Wife who knew how to "Let well Enough Alone." A few weeks after a love marriage. the doting husband had some peenliar thoughts on putting on a clean shirt, u. he saw no appearance of "a sw,hing." He thereupon rose earlier.than usual one morning and kindled a fire. When hang ing on the kettle he made a noise on pur pose to arouse his easy wife. She peeped over the blankets and exclaimed, "My dear, what are you doing?" He deliber ately responded, "I've put on my last clean shirt, and am going hi w•t.=h one now fot myself." Very well, ' stud Mrs. Easy, "you had better wash one for me, too !" 89,786 d 6 1.621 00 27.919 33 O C , A LLE GH E N Y iduRANcE OF PITTSBURGH. OFFICE.
