Grant to Hold his Command. It is understood that General Grant is still to hold his command of one column of the army. The organization of the army into divisions and columns is not yet complete. The reason given for this course of General Haßeck are that any censure or suspension of General Grant would reflect unfavorably upon himself. It appears that General Halle& also trusted to the weakness of the enemy, and he expected to be up in time to take part in the attack when Buell joined Grant. The latter made certain dispositions and movements also in obedience to orders from General Halleck in St. Louis. These are the reasons given by some for the ac quiescence of Gen. Halleek in this course. At all events there is quite a jealousy between the officers in. General Buell's common I and those in General Grant's, the former claiming that they saved the day and whipped off the enemy, while the latter got the credit of it. Something may be taken from either. Buell did fight well on Monday, for he has some good men, while the task of holding the enemy at bay was a great one, but from all accoints would have been done quite as well with out Grant in person as with him. Another and last excuse of Grant's friends is that they see no. reason why he should be sin gled out as an example of inefficiency and blundering when the thing is so common. There is of course no answer to this, but but that his caste is so aggravated, and came near being so fatal, that his debase ment may be a warning to others. 50 111 00 . 1 75 5 00 12 00 Is 00 71 00 Conversations with the Rebel The Fortress Monroe correspondent of the Philadelphia Inquirer says: This morning I employed an hour in conversing with the different rebel wound ed in the Hygeia hospital. The kind treat ment which they have received has com pletely subdued them. One of them said, "I wish I could only go to South Carolina and tell the people how kind you are to us. They would never fight another bat tle." They say that the rebel authorities do not allow the soldiers to hear about the kindness extended to Confederate prison ers by the North. If they did the men would refuse to fight against such friends. Upon telling a North Carolinian about the rebels burning the Navy Yard at Norfolk, he exclaimed, What fools! I wish some thing hard would hit them, and knock a little sense into them." Their wounds are all very bad, much worse than those of our soldiers. They do not seem to bear their suffering as patiently as our men. Doubt less their state of mind has something to do with it. Nothing will ever tend so much to con vince the South of the good Northern heart, as the kindness and sympathy which is daily being extended to their wounded, no difference being made between them and our own men. Such is the, philanthropy of war. •• • • - Number of Men in the Field. Senator Wilson estimates the total num ber of our troops in the field at 620,000. This is considerably lower than any pre vious estimate we have seen, and we have reason to believe is too low; : probably 600,000 would be nearer the correct figures. A LETTER, signed a "County Wexford Farmer," published in Saunders' Nan Later, of 'Dublin, describes the prospects of the agriculturists mid laborers in that part of - Ireland as very wretched. I Continued from Yesterdayd "Presently an impetuous charge. pur r posely made upon the enemy which - had , been threatening us, in the midst of dense 1 whirlwinds of snow, prevented the event so dreaded by , our wounded men. Calm was re-established, and it became possible for the medical - officers to pursue uninter ruptedly their operations. All the more serious wounds of the Imperial Guard and a great part of the line • were treated and operatedon during the first twelve hours ; then only did any of the surgeons.hegin to take rest. We passed the remainder of the night on the ice and.snow, around the fire of the bivouac of the ambulances. Never had there been so hard a day fir me; it had been almost impossible for me to restrain my tears in those moments when I was endeavoring . to sustain the courage of my soldier-patients." Amore catholic-hearted man than Lar rey never breathed; a fellow-creature had only to need his professional assistance, and be he Englishman, Austrian or Rus sian, he was his friend at once. He• held that a surgeon had no enemies except dis ease and death, aid on one occasion almost perished of a malignant fever contracted from some countrymen of our own who were prisoners to the French in Spain. With the armies of his beloved master, Napoleon, Larrey visited in turn almost every country in Europe, ofeach of which he has something novel to say, since his view of all things is taken from so unusual a stand-point ; but the most striking of all his experiences is without doubt his nar rative of the campaign in Russia. During that awful expedition the surgeon-in chief of the Grand Army went on foot. Cold, he had convinced himself, was only the predisposing cause of frost-bite, and the heat which succeeds the cold was the real cause of the mischief. Those who rode, upon arriving motionless at the bivouac, experienced an irrepressible de sire to warm themselves, and on approach ing a fire contracted gangrene in their half-frozen limbs. In all other countries through which the French passed as in vaders, it was Larrey's ciistom, upon evac uating a town, to leave a letter for the medical chief of the enemy, commending to his care such of his own unhappy pa tients as were too ill to be moved : and in no case was this confidence found to be misplaced. But in Russia every town was set on fire before Napoleon reached it, and consumed almost to the last house be fore he departed. Where the Grand Army looked for abundance, and rest, and shelter, they found nothing but flames. The hope of reaching their great goal, Moscow, animated them to an ex traordinary degree, notwithstanding that the four hundred thousand fighting men who had crossed the Nieman were re duced to less than a quarter of that num ber. "At length, on the fourteenth of Sep tember, on reaching an eminence in the road, the advanced-guard suddenly caught sight of Moscow. As all the hattilions of tae army reached that part of the road, they halted, and the sound of 'Moscow' reverberated through their ranks. It was a moment of intoxication. After a short halt, they continued their onward course ; and as the old city of the czars of Musco vy became brighter and clearer. the joy of the French soldiers increased. Murat, at the head of the cavalry, galloped forward, and concluded a truce with the enemy for the evacuation of MOECOIV. The whole French army soon afterward began to enter the gates of that city. The rench sol diers dispersed themselves through the town, and gazed at its novelties. The houses were richly furnished, the churches were profuse in ornament, and the pal aces seemed stored with the wealth of ages. Afterward, some of them climbed to the summit of the Kremlin. From that spot they looked looked down upon a city which in extent seemed as large as Paris ' Vienna, and Berlin together. Be neath them in survey, were fifteen hun dred palaces, with gardens and parks, and thousands of houses of a perfectly new arcldteeture, -- tiled or roofed with polished iron - of various devices. From the midst of these abodes arose hundreds of churches and innumerable steeples. Conceptions the most eccentric. of Byzantine, lartar, and Armenian architecture, had there raised edifices with twisted columns in front of them, and also produced a variety of contour and. painting. Many of the houses were of colored wood, but the,col ors were unmatched and incongruous. Then the silver and . gilded cupolas of the different churches, in reflecting the rays 'of the sun,- gave to this panorama much that was dazzling as well as new to French eyes. Commanding and overlooking all, by its gilded roof of immense height, and by its towers almost laden with steeples, with its walls carved or sculptured like garlands, the Kremlin, in its imposing grandeur, appeared like the father and protector of the old Muscovite city."
