A Stirring Incident
. .
correspondent of the' Tribune, de
scribing
the battle at Williamsburg, at the
moment when eight thousand of our brave
fellows , stood like a wall of rock to repel
the assault of twenty-five thousand of the
fresh troops of the enemy, narrates the fol
ltivting incident :
." Brigadier Berry of the stout. State of
Maine—wading through the mud and rain
at such speed that he actually overtook
and paSsed three other regiments—came
in sight. Heintzelman shouted with grat
itude. He ran. to the nearest band, and
ordered it to meet the coming regiments
with Yankee Boodle, and to glee'them
marckingtime into the field with the Star-
Siittn4led: Banner. A wild hurrah ! '
went up from the army, and, with a yell
that was electric, three regiments of Ber
ry's brigade went to the front, formed a
lice' nearly a half a Mile long, and com
menced a volley firing that no troops on
earth could stand before—then at the
doulde:quick dashed with the bayonet at
the rebel army, and sent them flying from
the field into their earthworks, pursued
them into, the largest of them, and drove
them out behind with the pure steel, and
then invited them to retake it. The at
tempt was repeatedly made and repeated
ly repulsed. The count of the rebel dead
in that battery at the close of the fight
was si*ty 7 three. They were principally
Michigan men who did this work. The
equilibrium of the battle was restored."
A Union Party.
In another column will be found the
proceedings of the meeting held in the
House of Representatives, at Washington,
by the conservative meinbers of Congress,
on Saturday evening last, to devise ~ome
plan by which to resist the disunion pur
poses of the radical aholitionints. The cor
respondent of the &rola. alluding to the
proceedings, remarks :
'•The caucus of conservative members of
Congress held at the Capitol to-day is full
of significance. It iA understood that if its
character'and purpose had been known
more fully, there would have been a much
larger number of Republican members in
attendance. under the powers conferred
on the committee, it is probable that a
number of conservative members will be
added It-is expected that the result
will be an organization of the conservative
majority in the House for a systematic re
sistance to the radical revolutionary meas
ures of the abolition distmionists, who are
known to have been acting in concert thr
the disorganization of the government and
the protraction of the war until their own
disunion scheme can he effected.
"Since the proceedings of the meeting
to-day have been made known, they have
elicited expressiuus of approbation from
several republican members who were not
present."
Gen. Terry and the Rebel Colonel
Major Gardiner, of the Seventh Con
necticut regiment, now at home on leave,
tells n characteristic story of General Ter
ry, the late Colonel of his regiment:
"After Fort Phlaski had been placed in
General Terry's charge, and as its rebel
commander, Colonel Olmsted, was about
to be sent North as a prisoner of war,
General-Terry, appreciating the ettibar
rassments to which he might be subjected,
told him that as it was not probable that
ho was supplied with current money, and
as Confederate money was valueless ex
cept us a curioAty, he desired that he
would accept of a sum that might free him
from temporary inconvenience, and pre
sented him with fifty dollars in good money.
The offer was gratefully accepted, of
course, with suitable acknowledgments : of
the generosity which prompted it. now
strikingly the act contrasts with the devel
opment of rebel ruffianism toward Union
men, as shown in Sdnator Wade's report."
