One of the noticeable incidents in Mr.
Cambrelling's congressional career washis
reply to the Hon. Edward Everett on the
slavery question in 1826. Mr. Randolph
in his reply said that he did not envy the
head and heart of the northern man who
defended slavery on principle. Mr. Cam
brelling follosed in denunciation and re
buke of the &Rifleman from Massachusetts
for saying that slavery was - " a condition
in life to be justified by morality, religion
and international law."
Setting the Thames on fire is a scheme
proposed in London by one Mr. Mackin
tosh, in view of a possible foreign inva
sion. He proposes to float a sheet of
some combustible hydro- carttonaceas liquid
over the water that sustains an adverse
fleet, to ignite this combustible liquid,
and thus to envelope the enemy in flames.
Growth of Chicago.
Reliable estimates, made within a few
days past, make it certain that already this
spring full 1,700 new residences and stores
are under contract, to be finished during
the coming summer, and it is believed that
before nest winter closes in full a thousand
more will be added to this number.—Chi

The successor of
.the late Governor
Harvey, of Wisconsin, is Edward Solo
mon; Esq., of Milwaukee, who, says the
Milwaukee News is the first German horn
citizen that has ever filled the_gubernato
rial chair of any State in the Union. In
politics he is a Democrat.
Great Breach of Proniise Case
The Chicago Times states that Miss P.
Hildebrand, a respectable and accom
plished young lady of that city, has sued
William Lill for breach of promise of
marriage and seduction, claiming $50,000
damages. Mr. Lill is an old resident, and
extensive brewer of. Chicago. and his
wealth is estimated at $300,000.
